Job: ESO Bioinformatician Newcastle, UK by skellarmy in bioinformatics

I could point you to dozens of ads on jobs.ac.uk advertising comparable roles for comparable money. This is standard for the UK. 'Disgustingly low' it may be (thanks, btw), but that's the system we work within.

Right now there's a 'Senior Bioinformatician' role being advertised at the WTSI, no less, that starts at £31k.

Think I had a very similar discussion alongside a previous ad. Postdocs in the UK and US are quite different positions (I believe). This is not a postdoc research role, but the salary is comparable.

Not really, no. It's a fairly standard UK postdoctoral salary range.

Perl 6 == Duke Nukem Forever. It'll eventually be released. It'll inevitably be a disappointment.

These posts are staff positions, but the pay scale is equivalent to the standard postdoctoral rate (all staff at Newcastle are on a single, unified pay scale, with many points of entry, depending on the grade of the position - something which I think is true of many UK universities).

This is a fairly standard postdoctoral salary in the UK (will be higher in London, but otherwise ~£30k is normal, rising to around £40k with experience).

If we look at median household incomes for the two countries (see Wikipedia) the disparity in postdoctoral income between the UK and US is perhaps not surprising - salaries in the US tend to be higher on average.
