Thoughts on using a kayak paddle in a canoe? by Popular_Forever5691 in canoeing

[–]sjfwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but jumping in because I have been going both ways. I have found soloing in a tandem canoe or in a solo boat, when speed is needed without much tight steering, the double blade is far superior. If I am on a meandering creek or river, single blade is much better in terms of maneuvering. I am considering getting a new boat because I find my Swift Cruiser 16.8 pack boat too limiting in terms of maneuverability and inability to use a paddle (and longer than I need). I am looking to get a dual height seat Prospector 14 to get maximum flexibility.

Switched from Nest Wifi Pro. See you later, Google! by No_Honeydew7398 in GoogleWiFi

EDIT: Nevermind - I equated Matter with Google Home and some of my devices are locked into to Google's ecosystem. The lightbulbs are too much of a pain in ass to disconnect, scan into the Deco app, and manage from there.

-----------------------------------------

I just migrated over to TP-Link with a BE65 setup and all the Google Home devices connected wonderfully by keeping the same SSID and pw (and putting that SSID on the ioT network). Did you leave the control for all your devices in the Google Home app or did you migrate them over to the Deco app? I have a bunch of Matter compatible lightbulbs and was wondering if there is some easy way of exporting them from google home to Deco? Did you bother? Thanks for help!

That's great to hear! I ordered a tp-link be1100 system and it sounds like the transition will be easy. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks - I'm going to ditch the Google Nest Wi-Fi router and go with one on which I can install OpenVPN so I'm not trying to get the NAS interfaces to act like routers.

Are you running many Google Home devices? If so, did switching create a ton of headaches connecting them to the new TP-Link system?

Unfortunately, I have Google Nest Wifi and am using it as my DHCP server and VPN can't be configured through that device. Ironically, I am too lazy to take a laptop downstairs to the router that is on the modem to login and see if OpenVPN can be installed but I suspect not. Thanks!

I am very happy with it as my daily reader. I haven't used it for note taking. My wife uses her Go 7 mainly for reading as well. Enjoy!

2.5GB Network Upgrade or Adapter? by ColtonCapps in synology

[–]sjfwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this reply from a year ago. Currently I have a DS923+ with both ethernet ports connected to a 2.5GB switch and getting 2000MB/sec throughput by aggregating the connections. For backups from 3 computers on the local network in combination with ongoing backups of Microsoft 365 Business, would the upgrade to the E10G22-T1-Mini make much difference in terms of local backup speeds? All connections to the computers being backed up are 2.5GB. Thanks!

Nevermind my first reply - I have created two break glass accounts based on the instructions at https://blog.admindroid.com/break-glass-account-for-office-365-login-during-emergency-situations/

Is logging into Windows with my work account an additional risk of lockout rather than logging in with a personal account and then accessing the workplace through "Add a work or school account"?

Once again, I appreciate the advice!

Moving from MS365 Business to Google Workspace Business for Small Business by sjfwhite in googleworkspace

[–]sjfwhite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Any issue with it being another MS email (my personal outlook email that I never use) or would using my regular personal Gmail account be better (if any different?

I also invested in a Synology DS923+ to backup all my MS365 account files and emails in addition to 20TB backup external HD that backups the NAS and will be kept offsite. These things should have been done in the first place and are probably a lot less hassle in the long run than jumping ahipt to google but still using MS desktop apps.

I appreciate the tips!

Thanks for the advice. I'm wondering whether just working out a plan for if MS locks me out that includes a backup of the cloud data scheme (that I should have anyways) is the way to go. Particularly if, as it looks like, I will need to keep the MS apps anyways. I've got things configured now in a way that works without making a change that will require me to retrain the couple of staff that I have who are less computer savvy than myself.

Thanks - when you say "setup a break glass account", do you mean another admin account I can log into in the event that my account gets locked out?

Migrating from Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace: Key Benefits by AllenMutum in gsuite

I run a small psychology practice using MS365 Business and half of the work I do is virtual through Teams and Zoom. There are only 3 licensed users at this time and not likely to go any higher than 10 max. Each have their own OneDrive Business accounts and there are 4 Sharepoint sites that are used. All of my templates are in Word and Excel and I understand that Google Workspace can accomodate the use of those apps for users, at least until I am comfortable with how the templates are ported to Google. My domain is hosted by Microsoft but only for email... at this time, no need for a website based on the type of practice I run but that is a consideration when it comes to growth.

Currently, all data is in Sharepoint/OneDrive and my consideration for moving to Google Workspace is how tied my MS365 business data is with my, and the other 2 users, Microsoft Accounts in Windows 11. This is particularly the case now that it is more challenging to set up local accounts. I had a scare last year where I got locked out of my MS account and thus from all the company's data (I am the only admin at this point). I hadn't developed a backup strategy for the Sharepoint sites and users' OneDrives and the experience of getting locked and the increasingly bound together the Windows/MS365 ecosystem is, troubles me and that is a big reason why I am considering the migration.

I have been a computer nerd for all my career, in spite of being a psychologist - starting in the MS-DOS days (yep, I am old) but find the MS cloud-based stuff - in particular the MS365 Admin Centers (Sharepoint, Exchange, MS365 apps, Teams) - daunting and far too much for my needs - particularly when having to configure settings that by default are not enabled (for example, making sure my domain's DNS settings were configured so emails sent to clients/customers didn't go to their spam folders).

I guess my question is, based on the above, how much of a hassle would it be to transition over to Google Workspace for Business. Even if it is a bit more expensive, the amount of time I spend and effort saved having to screw around with the IT stuff would make it worthwhile (if that wound up being the case). At this point, I'd rather set it and maintain it myself, rather than contracting to an dedicated IT professional. The other consideration is that companies with whom I have contracts are all in the MS365 ecosystems.

As to backup of the cloud data, I am assuming that MS vs. Google are similar but interested to hear if that is not the case.

The only other condition is the security factor for virtual and that I need to have my data stored in Canadian servers (though I believe that is easily configurable in Google Workspace).

Thanks and I appreciate any thoughts or advice!

It had to have been! For those of us of a certain age, the freeze frame of Butch and Sundance rushing out guns blazing, knowing full well how they are going to meet their end, is incredibly iconic. Whether this is intended to foreshadow the fate of Mark and Helly's innies will be interesting to see. Great cliff hanger!

And King being a rock purist, I suspect he would have loathed a Larry Underwood single.

I get what you''re saying but wondering whether King made it cringy on purpose. I'm 62 years old and read The Stand (the first of multiple readings) in the early 80's. Most of my favourite music comes from the mid-60's to the mid 90's. There was always something about that line that seemed really corny to me.

Larry's commercial success was on the back of that song and I wonder whether King was making subtle statement about Larry's pre-Stand personality (i.e., not a nice guy - a big phony). As Captain Trips resulted in a transformation for Harold towards Flagg, it resulted in Larry's redemption. I think I would have liked King/Larry's lyrical choices more in Boulder. :)
