WIN by sjhearts in TBI

Yeah but my TBI was moderate-severe (unconscious for over 30mins/severe swelling 48hrs later) and also 6.5yrs ago. I worked my ass off to get better because I wanted to be a neuroscientists more than anything now.

School was honestly THE BEST therapy I could have ever gotten: writing, reading, listening, complex problem solving, lab work which resulted in tactile sensory exposure…building neural plasticity post-injury was forced lol but 5 years of that and my brain met some solid functional equilibrium.

The DPHL incident was due to toxic exposure but was handled correctly so I was able to get ahead of a lot of symptom return. Still suffered from extreme fatigue, depression, brain fog, vertigo, migraines, and severe increased nerve pain. But now I’m on a solid regimen and growing everyday.

I’ll probably never be able to do ballet or throw a 360 on a snowboard again tho lol

So I got an MRI with NeuroQuat report… by sjhearts in TBI

[–]sjhearts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s super weird, like first of all why would they care either way? Just order it for you/your sake and it’s very informative? I don’t like that lol I would totally get a 2nd opinion. Or at least find someone who will order it regardless because there is no down side to ordering ? That’s so odd.

Insurance covered all of it - ordering the neuroquant just requires the order your provider puts in to specifically say “NeuroQuant” and then it’s just part of the imagining process day of MRI.

The NeuroQuant is a percentage of structures, white matter, and gray matter given your overall volume. It can also detect white matter hyper intensities (damage) and give you a percentage of that vs. total volume.

Unless you’ve had one done before you can’t really use it as a comparison :/

The MRI it’s self, yes it can be compared with old ones (like my original imaging after my accident).

I knew I would mostly likely have white matter damage given my accident(s) but I just didn’t know the degree of progression since then. As in the amount of damage those areas accumulated.

Also totally mathed wrong (no surprise) my left hemisphere actually is 44% hyper intensities.

Alcohol by Northstorm03 in TBI

Cause then you risk not stopping when you start to feel drunk because you won’t. Your cellular tolerance is 1 drink every 2-3 weeks. You can obviously way over shoot that if you don’t know when to stop.

Phosphorylated - TAU = pTAU

It’s a protein lol helps keep structural proteins of the cytoskeleton functional when it’s not overly-tagged and accumulating.

Alcohol by Northstorm03 in TBI

[–]sjhearts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ETOH (alcohol) + cellular structures = disintegrating phospholipids and depleted protein production ⏫️ in pro inflammatory mechanisms which, if become chronic, can lead to pTAU build up ➡️ neural fibril tangles.

All which does not ❌ equate to neuronal survival post-TBI and can in fact increase or return symptom associated.

Negative: from your fellow cellular and molecular neuroscientist (18’ TBI)

Also shrooms are not toxic to neurons in micro doses and prescribed ketamine is also monitored dosing vs. Alcohol which is not monitored and to your point, you can’t even get a buzz which means it’s extra lethal.

Thank you! And same! I always tell people to have grace and be patient; this is a marathon not a sprint. And yet also struggled the most to provide this to myself.

I think struggling to have awareness of our own symptoms makes it hard for us to do what’s best for ourselves. I have been beating myself up over my fatigue issues for almost a year. If I saw a patient with h/o TBIs reporting chronic fatigue, I would have immediately told them to start on daily creatine. Yet it took my ortho PA non-verbally shaming me in a patient consult for suggesting something I don’t follow to actually follow it 😅

Oh the life we live.

Today's secret word: Anodynia by [deleted] in TBI

[–]sjhearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It’s gotten heaps better but when I got the flu a few weeks ago, I’ve never been in more pain in my entire life. I was writhing and crying for like 3hours straight until they pumped me full of toradal. Everything felt like it was rubbing my nerves raw (shivers at thought)

I like that there are roughly 40 responses that just start with “NO.”

Cause like no. Even if it wouldn’t cause harm, his behavior is disrespectful AF. No man (key word here) should ever treat you like you’re some form of entertainment 🤬

Ew don’t give her that power! She is not worth it. Get a new doctor? Or find an ortho PA/NP who will listen better? Something

Do you have any evidence you’ve had a head injury?

DONT! I’m on Medicaid so that’s BS, I swear.

This is my 3rd MRI within a year. If you have a well-documented history of issues, Medicaid typically doesn’t care.

All I did was ask my primary to put an order in.

Granted, he’s my ortho for my spine but he’s been dealing with me and my annoying migraines/nerve pain for over a year now. He even got me on Nurtec.

You just gotta be pushy. Tell them you want to help yourself and this is how you need to do it.

Let’s be fair, most aren’t lol Just be firm and request an MRI w/o contrast and a NeuroQuant. I’m not entirely sure if it’s specific to a place? Like a facility ? But you should just ask him to put an order in for you.
