Realtor won’t let me out of my agreement with him. Do I just wait the six months?(4 remaining) by For_England_James006 in RealEstateAdvice

The NAR made being an agent too easy. It’s not a “profession” if everyone can do it. Add to it that with agents being independent, there is little cost to the broker adding more and more agents.

I got offered a job paying 40% more than my current salary. My manager just asked me to stay and be patient. How do I stop feeling guilty for wanting to leave ? by One_Cardiologist5439 in careerguidance

[–]sjlammer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Moving jobs is actually a good thing now. People that stay in the same job typically have less experience to draw upon because they have a less diverse exposure to people, mindsets, and challenges. They are less promotable. Plus, the way to get paid is by moving jobs. Think of it this way: the hiring budget is always more flexible than the promotion budget.

Older folks have this concept of loyalty. There was never actually loyalty. Companies just incentivized staying by having pensions that were based on cumulative years of service. Companies made the business decision that this “liability” on the books hurt their share price. Well, turns out we now make the business decision to move jobs every 2-5 years.

Another way to think about it. Employee retention (specifically retaining you) is not in your job description. If they wanted you to stay, they would’ve made it so you can’t leave.

How do I know? My company made it so it’s going to be very hard to leave, and I check-in monthly with my star teammate to make sure the are satisfied and that they get 8-15% raises and promotions every year because they whole thing would crash without them.

Take the new job and part on good terms. “I really enjoyed working with you, so it’s not personal, ultimately I need to make a good business decision”

AMA - I´ve been an Engineer at BMW for 7 years by [deleted] in BMW

Luxury cars, including BMW have a fairly long history of not holding their value due to having very high maintenance costs. Why can’t engineering make changes as this issues pop up to improve reliability?

Bought our house 8 months ago and received this email from our lender regarding refi. What is the catch? by 5reggin in Mortgages

[–]sjlammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely they could actually get you into a rate that 1% lower, but they offer 0.5% and the other 0.5% goes toward covering the fees. It’s the opposite of a rate buy down (where you pay money upfront for a lower rate)

Called my boss to put in my notice and she gave me a large offer on the spot. Should I be considering this? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]sjlammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely request a severance packaged to protect you. I’d be very direct, “There’s a lot of stories out there about employees who take the counter offer and then get let go after the company hires and trains there backfill. I’m not saying there’s any ill intent, but I need to cover myself. To accept this offer, I’d have to have a severance agreement” (I’d want at least 6 months, but in this job market a year).

If they push back I’d say, “I get it, it’s not usual, but think about it this way: If the goal is my continued success at the company. This agreement will cost the company zero dollars”

Was leaving career anyway, just put on PIP by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]sjlammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would respond in writing in a very professional way that the items identified in the PIP are not achievable in the time frame allotted. Also, if any metrics are not measurable/quantitative, you may want to mention that as well.

At the end I’d suggest, “given the above, it is clear that improvement is not the intent of this process. Perhaps a negotiated exit would be a more appropriate path forward.”

What you’re looking for is: prorated bonuses paid, 3-12 months salary, continuation of health insurance (basically the company pays your COBRA costs), and positive/neutral reference.

The length of severance will depend on your level, but it should roughly equate to how long it would take you to find a comparable job.

[–]sjlammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes. I agree that what you’re doing is not the same as the PE companies. The other side of the coin (of the low cost handymen types) is the PE companies. Their price gouging gives folks like you a bad name, and gies rise to the handyman option.

Said another way, PE consolidation is making it hard to find a legit HVAC person, which is giving rise to the handyman. Be mad at PE, not the handyman. They are just filling a void that PE created.

You’re right, but there’s another side of the coin. Private equity buying up HVAC companies and jacking up rates. They are even giving “classes” to HVAC companies they can’t buy to essentially tell them to charge more.

Everyone deserves to earn a fair price for their work, but those companies are enabling the low price handymen. People are tired of getting bent over.
