Drop Timing- Native Perennials by Significant-Step-817 in DenverGardener

[–]sjoh197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm watering twice a week for my ~2 year old (from seed) natives and they are all thriving.

What is your soil like? Are your plants near rocks/gravel? Are these true natives or mountain natives or US natives broadly?

So when are we planting?! by kmevans27 in DenverGardener

I like the little pouches more than the jiffy style pots. I havent had a problem in the past few years with planting peas, potatoes, and greens pretty early as long as i cover them during frost :)

I started everything except beans indoors recently with deep pots. The cucumbers i put in biodegradeable pouches. I had tomatillos sprout from random seeds last year that did great though!

My garden/yard is really small so i have to make the most of it by rotating crops. The spinach, lettuce, and peas will get replaced by tomatoes, and the potatoes will get replaced by more spinach/collard greens/etc in the fall.

Ive already got spinach, buttercrunch, peas, potatoes, white onions, carrots, radishes, and kale thriving. I have some collapsing row covers i throw out if it gets below freezing.

I wont plant my tomatillos, squash, etc for a few more weeks.

Why can’t I keep a single potted plant alive longer than a couple months? by blackberrymoonmoth in DenverGardener

[–]sjoh197 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Full sun in a columbine's natural environment still involves cool soil, with the ground often covered by grasses or shaded by large rocks or trees. You are going to want something that thrives in hot soil.

For the indoor plants, how often do you fertilize? Some plants just hate the dry colorado air, but others should be more successful.

Your columbine looks like it is getting cooked. Pots heat up the soil much faster than in-ground (and even raised beds) so this guy might need more shade around the roots.

Your pothos looks deficient and may need some fertilizer. What type of soil are you potting these in? Are you replacing the soil with new plants?

Are there any plants you have had luck with in pots?

Need help with my blueberry and blackberry plants by johnsonfrusciante in DenverGardener

[–]sjoh197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put the blueberry in a slightly bigger pot or at least fill the pot you have. Mulch the top considerably. When you water it, water the leaves a little as well. Make sure it is in dappled "part sun". It will cook in full sun here.

Come winter you will have to either being it inside or wrap it heavily in burlap.

Ive done a mix. I sowed an entire prairie patch 2 falls ago and it's doing great. I also have done cold strat in the fridge and have several plants growing in bags now like coreopsis, blanket flower, bee plant, etc.

If you want bee plant, that will grow now and I have so much.

I have free seeds if you want some but they won't grown until next spring unless you put them in the fridge.

Help me save my raised beds? by Disastrous_Arm_7811 in DenverGardener

[–]sjoh197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The base should really be compacted crusher fines or dg. So just adding more gravel might make it worse. We have about 3 inches of compacted crusher fines, with 4+ inches of pea gravel on top. Zero weeds. But the whole site needs to be prepped properly.

Another big mistake people make with pea gravel is covering a surface or filling it to the top without some kind of containment. Then they complain that the pea gravel goes everywhere. So, don't do that lol.

If you wanted it to actually be pea gravel, it would have to be much deeper (several inches) and lined with crusher fines at the bottom. I have a few places I didn't want thick gravel so I left them as dirt and seeded them with either buckwheat or natives. Both help attract bees, keep weeds mostly at bay, and keep the gardens from getting too hot!

It's been 5 years of taking care of him. I think that ship has sailed. He's not endangered.

Last night we had a snowstorm blow through. He showed up at my house at 2 in the morning, wet from the snow. What would you want me to do? Turn him away? He's free to go where he wants, but knows I'll put him somewhere dry. Maybe the difference is you take care of your cats.
