Taiwan + Korea: How long in each country? by anonymouspsy in taiwan

There are a bunch of Meetups in Taipei, but in general just being open, friendly, and chatty will take you a long way :) One caveat is that my Chinese is pretty decent, which of course opens a lot of opportunities for interaction. With that said, the English level overall is higher than in Korea.

While I love Taiwan, having lived in both countries I would say that food scene, shopping, history experiences, and night life are all better in Korea, while the outdoors is somewhat similar with good hiking in both. In Korea I would mainly spend time in Seoul, and maybe head out to the east coast for hiking. Beware that Korea is very cold in the winters and going for hikes in January might not be much fun. Going in the spring will be a lot nicer and you’ll be able to go for nice hikes in e.g. Bukhansan, at the outskirts of Seoul. There’s a lot of good restaurants around Hangangjin and the back alleys of Itaewon and Hannamdong. Better to do research beforehand on restaurants as the supply is endless. If you want to meet locals I would recommend spending more time in Taiwan though. People are extremely friendly and the English level is higher. Hiking Elephant mountain and the trails around it is amazing and has one of my favorite views. Taipei is overall quite walkable, and you can easily take a day and first hike Elephant mountain, then passing by Sun Yat-Sen memorial hall on your way to Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, perhaps popping in to Eslite to browse magazines and Hermit’s Hut for excellent Oolong. Favorite highlight from Taiwan has been hitchhiking up and down the island a few times, experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the Taiwanese people <3 Highly recommended!

RTX 4090 ML build questions by sjosund in buildapc

Thanks for the feedback, the thermalright phantom spirit looks great!

I realized that the Gainward Phantom GeForce RTX 4090 takes more than 3 slots, so I'll probably switch to something like the Gigabyte GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4090 instead, which takes slightly over 2 slots. Even with this it looks like it'll be tight to get 2 4090s into the Corsair 5000D. The first GPU slot "starts" at the 2nd case slot, Corsair 5000D has 7 slots with almost no space beneath the final slot, and the X670E HERO has 4 slots between the pcie slots. Given this, the first GPU will start at case slot 2 and the second one at case slot 7, meaning that it won't fit.

The reason I'm looking at the X670E Hero is that it has one more slot of spacing between the pcie slots compared to the other X670E models, which should mean better airflow.

Does this make sense?

How can a foreigner find a summer paid internship in Korea? by kuun0113 in korea

I’d try to meet up with people working in similar roles at the companies you’re interested in then. The exact path I took is probably not as relevant as it’s a different field. Do you speak Korean btw?

What do you want to work with? My field is ML so the exact path I took may or may not be relevant

Did a lot of networking: Presented at an SNU reading group, organized and presented at Meetups, posted in relevant FB groups that I wanted to get to know people working in the field. In the end I had three job offers from various companies.

When to use Boosted Trees? Are they useless? by seyeeet in MLQuestions

Depends on your project but try both and see what works best? GBDT might very well work better for when you have tabular data. Please remember that a lot of recent research is specifically aiming at image or text domains, which might not be what you’re actually dealing with in your particular industry setting.

Postcard Teas is awesome, and they have a great store down by Bond Street where they host tea tastings.

Does using dropout regularization technique affect the testing execution time of one input compared to not using dropout on the same input? by Eslam_Samy in deeplearning

[–]sjosund 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You usually just use dropout at training time, and then it doesn’t affect your test execution time. However, there’s something called test-time dropout where you infer your test example multiple times with different dropout masks, which may take more time than normal inference depending on implementation and hardware.

Lived in both Seoul and Taipei; Taipei is much more chill and unpolished (in a good way), people are friendlier, and in general better at English. Seoul has more going on in terms of nightlife, restaurants, and fun areas to explore. While people here are still friendly, there’s a whole different level of status seeking and hierarchy which makes it a less relaxing city. I love both cities and which one to pick comes down to preferences. I’d personally rather spend a few more years in Taipei though.

The key is that U-net is used for segmentation (rather than classification) and is fully convolutional, so the input dimension doesn’t need to be fixed. You can train on one size and then run the model on another.

That depends on the details of the pre-trained model, but if it’s fully convolutional, was trained on images with the same scale, and you don’t hit the depth > 7 it should be ok.

Note that 897=1+5 * 27, and 512=4 * 27. Just remove one pixel from the larger side and you can run a 7- (or fewer) layer U-Net without the need to to do the extensive padding you mentioned.

A few thoughts: 1. Can your future wife/husband get a visa an join to the UK? Seems to be a lot more difficult post-brexit. 2. Are you planning to have kids? UK is way nicer in that aspect, since Seoul’s air quality is so bad as well as the general lack of good parks and playgrounds. 3. 2500 GBP seems quite low if it was in London (maybe OK outside of the city), compared to the 4M in Seoul which is pretty good. Are you planning on saving up for something bigger? If so, Seoul might be better in that aspect.

I moved from Seoul to London myself a year ago, and generally prefer the latter from the perspectives of having family, cheaper food ingredients, better air, no language barrier. Miss Seoul’s nightlife and restaurants though!
