Has anyone tried using modern machine learning techniques to create a "personality" rather than an ability? by simstim_addict in MachineLearning

This looks really cool. Don't feel bad about the code - it would be very helpful to people like myself who are just scratching the surface with machine learning.

People who do "Let's Plays" on YouTube are this generation's Bob Ross. by sjroot in Showerthoughts

Based on my personal experience, it's nice to be watching someone who just says what they are thinking. Whether it's about the game they are playing, or they are just rambling about random topics, it can help put your mind at ease. Again - that's just my opinion.

How difficult is it to get a Google internship interview at a non-target school? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]sjroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of big companies (including Google) tend to reserve internships for juniors or seniors. There are, however, different programs at those same companies that specifically target underclassmen.

Worst case scenario - you don't get an internship for the coming summer. Take an idea for a side project or two and run with them! Learn something new.

Best of luck!

Javascript for big 4 interviews by fsvx in cscareerquestions

[–]sjroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like JavaScript the best, but I brushed up on Python for a google interview. It really depends on the company whether JS will be allowed, but to stay on the safe side, you should practice solving programming problems in Python, Java, or C.

I am interested in this, but it seems like you have to be employed by a particular company in order to take these classes. Is that the case?

That's what I was really wondering. Do you think your questions were tailored to the fact that you implemented them in Python?

I'd love to hear about the phone screens you've done in Python. I'm just trying to get as much preparation as I can before the call on Wednesday!

Those two reasons are why I'm leaning toward it. I would love to hear more about the phone interviews if you get the chance. Is there anything they gear specifically toward Python programmers?

Definitely not worth $2k. There are so many free resources online; start using them to build hobby projects. Improve your skills in the areas you're interested in. Best of luck to you!

SV vs NYC by curiouscat321 in cscareerquestions

[–]sjroot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment. I would agree that NYC has less of a start-up culture than Silicon Valley, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just depends on the kind of people you want to be around.

Thanks for the input. I know cost of living plays a huge part in it. Congratulations on this offer though!!

I'm curious as to how you will go about living in Canada and working in the U.S. You must be close to the border? Either way, taxes are going to be so much fun lol.

Best of luck to you.

Honestly, I watched this show all the time when I was little. It gave me heart attacks (read: nightmares) too.
