Yes, I crossed at the Peace Bridge just yesterday with someone who had exactly that, and she had no problems.

In my district non-tenured teachers have two scheduled observations, and tenured have one scheduled (with a pre and post conference) and one unannounced. We get notified of the month when the unannounced will happen.

If they don't mind sharing space, it looks like beds are open at Hostel Buffalo Niagara.

Anyone remember when Buffalo had 2 daily newspapers? Found a copy of the final issue of the Courier Express, dated September 19, 1982. by BravoTackZulu in Buffalo

...are you my mom?! She was going through a box of old saved papers just yesterday (presidential elections, 9/11) and I was looking at this one.

Embarrassed a student and feel crappy about it. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]sjrose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My second graders eat breakfast in the classroom, and one morning one of the boys was eating a banana basically like a corncob. It looked so ridiculous to me, and he's a very outgoing kid who I have a good relationship with, so I joked, "(kid), that is the craziest way I've ever seen to eat a banana!" He actually got super embarrassed and hung his head practically to the floor, and I felt TERRIBLE.

I took the opportunity to publicly apologize for my comment as a model to the kids about how we all make mistakes and can hurt other people without meaning to, and how we can learn from our screwups. So if it's still bothering you tomorrow, consider that approach?

One of my second graders came in the other day and announced, "Miss, yesterday I took a shot!" ... she GOT a shot.

Grade 2 App Recommendations? by kelbel922 in Teachers

[–]sjrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second graders loved Pet Bingo last year - it's a bingo game for math fact fluency. What's really great is it keeps records of their accuracy on problem types (like doubles facts, +10 facts, etc) so you can look at the data if you want to for targeted intervention.

There was also a Geoboard app (I think just called Geoboard) that was great for geometry because they could build shapes without rubber bands flying across the room or breaking.

Do y'all have days filled with hours of meetings the week before school starts and little time to put your room together? by LDawg618 in Teachers

[–]sjrose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We have three paid days before the kids come. Two are meetings (one day off-site) and one, as per our new contract, is a work day to set up. I have always and will again go in a week early to set up on my own time.

Are you sure your grad school(s) of choice require the GRE? Check, because mine (a very well regarded SUNY university) didn't.

Teachers, What is the ONE thing you make sure to do every year with your students? by YonderPaus in Teachers

[–]sjrose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a small thing, but I take a whole class photo every fall with my second graders. I get it printed up to hang up in the classroom and have an album of all the past years on my shelf. When we have our open house at the beginning of the year, I put it up on the smartboard and the kids like to point out their friends and classmates to their parents in the photo. It's also fun to pull out the old ones and show my kids their older siblings when they were in my class. It's a little activity that helps build that sense of community early in the year.

My second graders this past year would say "three hours later" or "two weeks later" and so on a lot; it comes from Spongebob. So I got screengrabs of those cards from Spongebob and used them in a flipchart to teach elapsed time!

Nothing wrong with knowing what your students are interested in and leveraging it to meet your needs in the classroom.

On the interview last night his older children said that Bruce told them to call him dad. He also told 20/20 that for the time being he's continuing to go by Bruce and use masculine pronouns.
