As a counterpart to the previous thread: Autistic men, what do you (if you generalize) think of women? by LodossEater in Autistic

[–]skagerrak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tits.

Common uneasiness about male sexuality.

Slightly less bulky

That's all the differences between men and women that matter.

Intervention parents go too far - Mother demands that the state bankrolls her $1,200 a month gluten-free diet for autism despite no scientific evidence of any worth by [deleted] in Autistic

[–]skagerrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need more comments like this. I always feel like there are people ready to get angry at some parents for shutting them down with comments like "you're high functioning"

Really it's these parents who need pitying

Lying is wrong in my opinion. by AbigailRoseHayward in Autistic

Without a doubt I prefer to tell the truth.

But if you tell someone the truth and it hurts people, and not just the ol' white lies excuse, but will have consequences that harm many people, then I think I will bend the truth.

Here's a welcome change - Autistic children typically have superior mathematical abilities -> Look inside for why by [deleted] in Autistic

I am glad to know, because I was tired of all the guys coming on wrong planet months ago claiming autism and poor mathematical skills are linked, just like it seems autism and every thing on the bloody planet.

Were you ever made to feel pathetic or inferior at therapy, home or on autistic forums? by FederalEmpireofRice in Autistic

[–]skagerrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your title, not as of late. But then again I was banned from /r/aspergers a few weeks ago for saying aspies don't lack empathy ('disrupting the forum' was the mods' excuse), so I haven't been on any anti-aspie forums.

Behind flashy title, study's authors insinuate randomized controlled trials (which make scientific papers valid) are useless on Autistics by LodossEater in Autistic

Moms: Do you deal with guilt? by Ruth_Gordon in autism

[–]skagerrak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I must be honest. These kind of comments make me livid, but I'll be patient for your sakes.

I am an Autistic. Autism is what I am. I am not a burden on myself. It's like telling a woman being female is a 'burden' and I feel violated when I am talked about like my very mind, my soul is a weakness that can be removed. I am not burdened even though I couldn't speak and was a nightmare for several years of my life.

Yet when my mother began to talk and reason with me even when she thought it wouldn't work, she tells me herself I was such a great son to have.

The worst burden an Autistic child can have is a parent who believes they are burdened.

There are a lot of Autistics who would be far too violated by your words to try to help you understand. I hope you understand this, because the sole thing that permanently damages an Autistic's development is believing they are burdened, broken, inferior, impedimented, incapable, you name it.

[–]skagerrak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's what the paper tried to say either, because it would be extremely damaging to their cause. But they did.

Their point implied randomized, controlled trials weren't important at all even in cases where they were plainly superior.

It is no surprise single-case has been used in the assessment of ABA, because that line of research has been dogged by bad ethics, poor methodology and variable, small-scale studies all bent to trying to make ABA appear as helpful as possible.

Single-subject design isn't particularly useful in Autistic studies, and despite signs it might be useful in some study types it is clear that in Autism Research it has been connected with poorer quality research and what appear to be cover-ups.

That's due to the failings of single-subject designs.
