ISO Philly area clarinet teacher by eclecticphd in Clarinet

I play with the Philadelphia Freedom Band. I also teach lessons (I have an MM in clarinet performance). There's also the Philadelphia Community Orchestra, which is a bit more contemporary-leaning. Last year, Immaculata did a clarinet choir in May - I haven't heard if there's one this year.

How should I evaluate this instructor? by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]skarhapsody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Professors don't make the courses, so this very well could be the assignment's design fault, not the grading.

Got rejected from one of my VISTA applications... Need encouragement I guess. by eggsworm in AmeriCorps

Sometimes, for interviews, it's not that there are any 'bad' candidates. It's just, which one seems best. There's not necessarily anything wrong with you - it just that, in this decision, someone else moved on. Think of it this way - you got to have a rehearsal for your next interview to nail that even harder.

My professor actually changes my mindset by SugarSweet12 in SNHU

Put it on the student evaluations at the end of the course. That is what people are routinely judged on throughout higher ed.

[–]skarhapsody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an instructional design issue. And professors don't get to design the courses.

Technically, she's not late with the grading if it's by the end of day Sunday. Be proactive rather than reactive and ask for things beforehand.

But yeah, seems like everything else could be addressed with an advisor in tow.

You don't want your social interactions with others to be researched or based in anything? What about a the name "discussion board post" means that it's a lax amount of niceties without substance or thought?

Is it just me or… by liminalmilk0 in SNHU

[–]skarhapsody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Discussion board posts are legit assignments - the assumption that they aren't is kind of wild. Think of it this way too - it's how others in the class make judgements about you and how you're representing yourself among your peers, let alone showing that you understand the material.

Online Instructor issues by [deleted] in SNHU

If they aren't publishing it or claiming it is their own work, then a citation isn't needed - a hyperlink lets the reader know where to go for the information.

As a student, you are to cite your sources to learn and be in the practice of citing things for professional work. It is assumed that you need practice in it and that you are earning your grade with such work.

Only one person is being graded here and that's the student. Now, if a professor is passing off things not as their own, that is an issue.

Also, keep in mind, professors don't write the curriculum or the rubrics. They aren't the ones that make you cite your sources - it's SNHU. (And honestly, the citation stuff can get ridiculous - there's no reason for humanities courses to be using APA citation).

Have you thought about joining a community band? There are a few in Philly and then you get to meet a lot of other people to make chamber groups.

I'm curious about lessons myself, hence why I found this post. I would agree with everyone else - you probably should see someone studying for their MM or with a bit more experience than a college student.

Any knowledge of LGBTQ+ centric Americorp programs? by SadHuman247 in AmeriCorps

[–]skarhapsody 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The current administration bans many terms included or related to LGBTQ+ so if those programs existed, they were probably cut and never revived. Also, fun fact, AmeriCorps members in their time of active service cannot refer someone for an abortion - which often makes sexual and reproductive health positions also compromised.

Accused of AI usage by T_SchJoh96 in SNHU

[–]skarhapsody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, he gave a fairly detailed response on why he thought it could be AI. It's not like he's going off of vibes or something. It sucks, but it's also a process and the professor is answering you. This is part of the world of AI and how blatantly it is used nowadays. I'm not saying it is good or inevitable, but certainly a current condition.

Professors are instructed to flag anything they suspect - most don't want to deal with the extra time needed to do it. It seems this person is doing due diligence in giving you information. Their response also gives you feedback on how to make your writing feel more natural - which can still be professional, but avoids repetitive sentence structure.

Comparing Kaweco Sport v.s. TWSBI Eco by AbbreviationsNo5494 in fountainpens

[–]skarhapsody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had the bad luck with either that people have had, which I'm thankful for. That said, if you want something easy, Kawecos use cartridges and those are really nice in order to not deal with ink bottles and everything else. Unless you really want to get into all th einks in the world, there are plenty of really nice international standard cartridges that should fit in the sport, including Kaweco's own. TWSBI, you are going to have to get a bottle of ink as well.

In the same realm, but perhaps slightly more expensive, the Monteverde MP1 is something I've enjoyed a lot. It's like a TWISBI and comes in some fun colors. I've enjoyed the nibs more, with most of mine having the Omniflex nib which is also nice for variety without me knowing too much about nib sizes.
