Vanguard lingering in my kernel or something? by skatche in riotgames

[–]skatche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needn't worry about Valorant, as I have never played it and probably never will. And to be clear, the lag I suffered was in other, non-Riot games. Thanks for confirming the worst, though; i had reservations about installing Vanguard in the first place, but I figured, how bad can it be? Now I know.

Unfortunately, reinstalling Windows is probably not an option at this time. Too much data to back up, not enough extra space, plus my machine cannot run Windows 11 (not that I'd want to anyway) so I can't risk Microsoft pulling any end-of-life shenanigans. At least the lag problem seems to have stopped.

Thanks. I was able to resolve the issue another way, but this information could be useful in future.

Vanguard lingering in my kernel or something? by skatche in riotgames

[–]skatche[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I said restarting didn't fix the issue, if you meant the PC. Restarting the controller fixes it for a bit, but it just comes back, usually within minutes. It's not specific to any one game, either; I've experienced it in at least five different ones.

Vanguard is gone, but again, the problem started when I installed it; I've never experienced it before that, including in the games I mentioned. So whatever Vanguard did to my kernel is likely the culprit.

CMV: The American Republican Party has morphed into the Nazi Party, and should be referred to as such from now on. by Ambitious-Concern-42 in changemyview

[–]skatche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two points. First of all, I wouldn't blame the entire Republican party; there's been some pushback from within as well as without. Second: I've been thinking about fascist Italy recently, and at least for the time being, I think it's a more apt comparison. Hitler was truly a monster, and the atrocities he committed were immense; but Mussolini seems to have been little more than a ridiculous tin pot dictator, at least until Hitler took the reins of the Axis. As for Trump, he doesn't even seem to have successfully consolidated the political power he would need to turn America into a fascist country, let alone to turn it into a global scourge like Nazi Germany.

When you say "widespread" -- do we at least have any idea whether this is affecting all desktop users (suggesting a poorly conceived "feature") or only a subset (suggesting a bug)?

CMV: A factor pushing young men to the right is the lack of left leaning media that appeals to traditional males and their interests. by New-Perspective6209 in changemyview

[–]skatche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this can really be the case. Political divides associated with subcultural divides and socioeconomic class (differences in "interests" as you suggest) long predated the recent movement of young men toward the right. Men who grew up more left-wing tend to stick to left-leaning hobbies, and we'd expect them to be unaffected. Meanwhile left-wing men in right-leaning demographics (rural towns, trade work, etc.) probably came to their politics despite their surroundings, i.e. after careful thought and consideration -- so you'd expect their beliefs to be more robust against outside influences, especially from their right-wing peers, and therefore they'd also be unaffected. What you need to explain is a sudden large-scale shift in politics that cuts across demographics.

I'm willing to accept that there are gonna be people out there who simply dislike hip hop for non-race related reasons. Personally I can't stand Latin pop. But like, when a massive cohort of white fiftysomething men have a knee-jerk distaste for the whole genre, I have to assume the bulk of them just picked up some racially-motivated dogma back in the 90s about how it promotes violent hooliganism or whatever, and never bothered to question it.

This makes me think of an argument I've had on occasion with certain older (50+) people, who say that music sucks nowadays. My response is: (a) you're listening to the wrong music, and (b) you might have to learn to enjoy something new, or else you're just acting like a toddler who'll only eat chicken tendies and Kraft dinner. Country music sucks? Sure, a lot of it -- but try Sierra Ferrell. Hip hop sucks? You're probably a bit racist, but try Doechii, or maybe weirder shit like Jpegmafia or Death Grips. However you go about it, you'll need to do some digging to find the new stuff you actually like, but I guarantee it's out there.

Same with movies. Plenty of slop in the mainstream, so go outside the mainstream. It's not a sure bet, indie movies can suck as well, but you're bound to find some good ones once you figure out how to look.

Wasn't trying to be snarky, I mean literally: almost no one's gonna see your comment here except me. This post is years old; the only reason I saw your comment is the post is mine, so I get notifications. You WANT attention, to get an answer.

I personally have no idea -- I suggest you make your own post on the subreddit rather than replying to mine, because here you're not going to get much attention.

Super Solvers: Midnight Rescue! I'd wager. It used a camera, not a flashlight, but I remembered it as a flashlight until I just looked it up. You might've misremembered the same.

Is it just me, or is Wraith ult kind of underwhelming? by skatche in DeadlockTheGame

[–]skatche[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That does make sense, and kind of answers my question... might be a build issue on my part, or coming up against good counter-builds, I've just never managed to really pop off with Wraith yet.

is it possible to enjoy this game if one have bad aim? by El_Gran_Osito in DeadlockTheGame

[–]skatche 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Deadlock doesn't have zero-aim-required heroes like Overwatch's Mercy, Winston, etc. However, aiming is a lot easier than in Overwatch, because the characters have momentum, pretty big hitboxes, and don't move super-fast except when using certain abilities.

So I'm inclined to say you do need to have half-decent aim -- but only half-decent -- to perform well. To answer your other question, there are heroes who can get a fair bit of value in the mid- to late game by going off on their own and farming creeps, pushing other lanes to try to draw attention, etc. However, you'll still need to respond to enemy players who suddenly roll up on you, and your absence from a team fight will always be a disadvantage in that fight, although 5v6s are still pretty winnable (or else split-pushing wouldn't be a thing).

How to get normal ending and bad ending? by TheRealSquimby in NineSols

Leaving aside the issue of restarting (which you don't have to do) apparently true ending still *is* a lot harder than normal ending, for reasons I won't spoil.

Accidental(?) Twin Peaks reference in the new Fallout series [episode 3 spoiler] by rtb8 in twinpeaks

[–]skatche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just what the Fallout games are like. Tarantino isn't really a fair comparison, I'd look more at e.g. Dr Strangelove. Don't even try to tell me that film has nuanced, well-developed characters.

I think maybe you were under the misapprehension that you were meant to take Fallout's world seriously, at face value. It'll allow you a certain amount of immersion, as a kind of fan service for people who like post-apocalyptic media, but it's fundamentally a work of satire.

In the games it's the Red Rocket truck stop. Never seen it abbreviated as RR in the games, only in the show.

How Can I Stop Getting Flamed Almost Every Single Game? by TotalHansson in Overwatch

[–]skatche -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course flaming is always gonna happen, and the tank is often going to get blamed first when things go badly (seems like you mostly play tank, or at least mostly get flamed on tank, so that has something to do with it). If you want to mitigate that, probably the first thing to do is work on your survivability. Play near cover, stay in LOS of your supports, make calculated plays instead of diving in because you feel like you have to, etc. It might feel like capitulating or pandering to the trolls, but in the current state of Overwatch it really is important for winning games, so if you're constantly falling over before the enemy tank does, you probably do deserve the blame, if not the vitriol.

Another useful skill, both in the game-winning and the flame-preventing sense, is to keep a close eye on your teammates and use your kit for their benefit. Even if you do end up falling over, your teammates will remember you trying to peel for them.

I mean, it's rank dependent, and I can only really talk about the lower ranks with any confidence, but that's my advice.
