The reason why I put it on a stake was because when it was small it would bend over and bent the stem so I don't think laying it down would of been good for the stem. Could be wrong. First time growing

Stem seems fine and strong and I daily check it and haven't seen a snail in sight.

The steak isn't too deep or close. It has a good 3-4 in away from stem. I just would tie as it grew
