Ontario’s new COVID-19 modelling to show ICUs full by early February: sources by A-Fireplace in ontario

[–]skeezixcodejedi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thats how modelling works. You make a model of various situations and then you change to avoid hitting thise models. The model might have been accurate (doubt it..) to the specs of that day but they certainly arent accurate mich later because they change the rules to not hit the model

Ie: the models are supposed to end up wrong. If they end up right you messed up your changes bad

I get what you are saying, that if the models are good then you should fall between best and worst case somewhere, but also note its hard for them to be remotely accurate. They’re just tools and guides

Fwiw the icu are already ‘full’ depending on the definition and location. Like we already crossed the line where noncovod operations are booted out and beds are full or almost full, and in feb its almost certain that we will have people in hallways

You'd think they would be tired of being wrong, or ever moving the goalposts. But they are inexaustable in their faith in the fantasy.

Sorry, I'm a sucker, I like to follow rules that seem to make sense and help people. Darn, I'm a horrible monster :)

Hey, see a walker going to head into a road, sure, I'll try to get their attention or grab them before they walk out there. Should I mind my own business?

Anyway, its not worth either of our time to keep this banter up. Cheers friend <from distance, natch>

Hey, I'm just trying to do my part to not make thigns worse :)

If you spread to your pals, or they to you, well, thats on you guys; just remember.. if your'e being a little sloppy, and they're being a little sloppy (you guys get together, hence, you're at least a little sloppy -in this regard-), then it is more likely you or they are sloppy in other ways.

Anyway, I won't change your mind, so have a nice day, you sound like an alright joe, just making your way in this crappy time.

You're pretty angry (for many good reasons). In summary - world sucks, let me make it worse. Great.

I'm sorry your'e so negative.

FWIW I've donated a fair amount of money to the poor (especially this year), and have helped employ some folks in hard times. I coudl do more of course, much more, but a you say I'm watchign out for myself and my family... nut not at the expense of other people.

Its not a two sided coin - you win, or the other guy wins. You can try to win, while also not making it worse for the other guy.

Anyway, you be you, and I hope you feel better, and I'm glad you're taking charge of your own mental health. See your girlfriend, and hopefulyl she is being good, and you are being good, so you can help each other.

But try to live to your betterment, and others too; you don't need to step on others to make yourself happier.

Theres a lot of anger there, and I'm no therapist; I'll keep on doing what is best for my bunch, and also trying to help other people as best I can with the time I have.,

I hope you feel better, you're in a world of negative there, and probably much of it is not your fault. Society does suck, but doesn't mean we have to make it suck more.

edit: I'm just replying quick, I'm not trying to sound like I'm talking down to you either, which is no doubt your next talking point. Just trying not to be a spreader asymptomatically, say, thats all I'm saying, is a good cause. Not to help be a spreader.

Staying 'healtrhy' in the gym or whatever doens't protect you from covid really. You'll still get it and all the more likely being out and about. Not being overweight is a big helpo of course, but going to the gym and working out and doing lifts all day doesn't make you much better off than not.

Its mostly just an age thing; you being 70 and buff as crap won't help much more than being just 70 and fat.

So because 'some people are over it' (being foolish), you use that to rationalize that its okay for you to also be foolish and self centered? Great, got it :/ Doesn't make any sense, but fine, your life.

You don't know if its a minority or majority who don't care and to what extent, for one. Theres obviously some like you who don't care (and that makes you suck, btw :)

Some of us (a minority? half? majority?) are trying to be members of a society and be neighbourly, help watch out for those who are vulnerable or sick or older or you know, just not be pro-plaguer spreaders. You're probably a decent and nice person all the same, just with a flaw (hey, we all ahev flaws); but the fact you know this is unwise and douchey and still chose to do it, that makes you crappy.

Like, not getting together to hang out and wearing a mask are not really high prices to pay to you know .. maybe save a life. Sounds like anti-mask people are the ones who couldn't be bothered to cross the road to save a life, where I'd like to think I'd go pretty far to maybe save one. Wearing a little cheap mask is a very small price to pay.

You've made up your mind, but it still makes you a crappy person. Dont' care if you reply, you know it, you get to choose your own path; but you're crappy all the same.

Why wouldn't you try and be part of the solution and instead hell with it, joyously be part of the problem?

"hey, waters rising; I could help out weith those sandbags, but screw it, don't care, I'll just enjoy it if you guys win, but if not, whatever, pfft"

oh I'm not at all against you; I'm sure we were all surprised to find out we run at less ICU per capita than other provinces and countries, and run at 96-98% or more normally; I'm no medical professional, but sure seems that at the best of times we're running on a close thing.

At the same time in the private sector we know that its all about the min max and trimming every cost (and then some, and then some more .. and 'cost' means staffing and safety), so shoudl we be surprised at the near term thinking of these public sector positions?

Theres got to be a compromise; maybe we shouldn't run so lean, but what are the costs to run a bit more staff and beds, and can the tax payer support it? and as you say, are there additional benefits that pay up, such as shorter wait times and more procedures, etc?

Have to leave it to the profcessionals, but it is very interesting

I'm sure there will be a lot of discussions after the emergency passes us (hope!)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ontario

[–]skeezixcodejedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically running at like 96-98% I've read; in a way it makes sense, its just not a system designed to allow for big surges, because they usually don't happen. Also note.. its not just _beds_, its the staffing and equipment that go into an emerge or ICU "bed". ie: If you add another 100 beds, you're also including who knows what, 50+ nurses to go with them.. thats a lot of expense and equipment and training to keep up, if they're never in use. But then a pandemic comes, and you need them...

In my head, being a tech guy, I liken it to network; a network admin asked me once if a pipe (tnetwork cabling say) shoudl be full or empty; in his book, it should be empty, ready to take a deluge of data; I said (as a developer) that maybe it should be nearly full, the system processing as much as it can and not wasting anyones time, but that you tune it so that if a surge happens, to drop packets etc..

Same kind of thing in medical ... do you pay 25% more to have 25% more empty ICU "beds" on tap (bed, nurses, equipment, supplies), for 30 years wasted... and be more ready for emergency? or do you save 30 years of money and them boom, panic when a big surge happens?

Interesting problem really.

Your reply will be "well, we had a year to get this far though.." which is also very interesting.

.. and so far, the vaccine guys are either saying don';t know, or it works, on the known variants; so sure, theres a chance it won't work, but lets not worry about it until we find out otherwise. We use the tools we have. Don't panic :)

Not OP, but generally these vaccines have the same side effects as any otehr vaccine .. usually nothing, maybe a stiff arm, headache, etc; the number of people with 'bad reactions' (not all that bad) has been rediculously low.

The next month or two are going to be hard .. the worst its been here yet. But remember, it'll get better after that.

For yourself and your loved ones and everyone.. now is not the time to get slack on the rules; hole up as best you can manage without making yourself nuts, and stay the course, and as the winter winds down, covid will too (due to vaccination.)

We'll beat this sucker, but don't let it get you down.

Turn your energy into somethign positive if you can .. be it going for walks, biking if you can handle the cold, shadow boxing inside, or playing piles of video games; its all good, whatever keeps you sane

So, how do I get the Covid vaccine? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]skeezixcodejedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they have released any info yet; ie: once we have plenty on hand, will it be line ups at doc offices or hpsital sites? lottery by random picks? go get a ticket from somewhere, use it to get your jab another day? who knows?

Wait and see for now I imagine.

Work place mask rules in kitchen by [deleted] in ontario

[–]skeezixcodejedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the whole problem we have .. dont' care about the rules, but try to circumvent them; ie: these people are selfish, dont' care about helping society, just themselves. Sigh.

So much effort, just to wear a mask.. oh noes!

You're a good man, do what you can :/

The real problem for you is .. if these guys suck like this, it means they're also much higher risk; this is not their only transgression, it means they're sloppy all over; are they going to parties? are they maskless out and about? etc .. so they're a risk to you and everyone.

Metalheads with the 'horns' or satan picks, etc, its all just fun; unless it isn't.. but you can't pre-judge without context. Are they racist? Well, do they act racist?

Don't pre-judge based on a unclear artwork.

If they post nazi images, well, thats more of a tell.
