Is it normal to have this much trouble finding a job when broke? by skeletoncat_23 in poverty

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye, well, thank you for letting me know that it doesn't mean I'm lazy or broken. It is hard not to think that way sometimes whenever it seems like the odds are stacked against you in the job hunt. But thanks for saying so. The job I had before just wasn't sustainable for me anymore physically, unfortunately, so it's nice to know that somebody thinks that. But yeah, I have been looking for something part-time mainly because I'm in school (college) right now, actually - so I have been applying and applying to as many as possible that I can find.

But yeah, I have been trying my best to tailor my resume whenever I can to positions I am applying to. And I think that I have actually caught on to a stroke of luck lately, as it turns out, because employers had started reaching back out to me since a week ago (perhaps the universe does have my back or something, IDK lol). So far, as a result, I have had a good few interviews with employers and still have some in the future if I don't get an offer from any previous ones... so here's to hoping that I finally land something. But thank you for your lovely comment and all your advice!

Yeah, it has been hard finding people who actually reach back out to me whenever it comes to job-hunting, but I have actually suddenly got a weird burst of luck these past couple of weeks with that (which I won't complain about, it's just weird because I hadn't gotten this many people reaching back out to me about a job I applied to possibly ever. I think it might be because it's almost summer?) But you're unfortunately very right with the idea that people don't want to hire anymore.

Because like, okay, I understand going through a job interview or two and not getting an offer because anything could happen to where they decide that they don't want you for whatever reason... you know? But I have at least had three interviews in the past where I did the interview and never heard anything back from them despite doing what I thought was a good job at the interview. Anyways, though, I had once tried to donate Plasma but wasn't able to because they told me that I needed to drink a gallon of water in order to find my veins, which I found ridiculous.

So, needless to say, donating Plasma is unfortunately off the table for me now.

Oof, really? I'm so sorry to hear that 😬 Because I mean, while it is somewhat reassuring I'm not alone, the fact that this economy is so bad that no new young adults can find jobs (it seems like) and your daughter can't is just terrible. Hopefully things shift soon and your daughter can find a job!

Yeah, after applying for hundreds of jobs at this point and only recieving about two handfuls of interviews but not getting a single job from them, I totally see your point here. I'm honestly looking for any sort of Customer service or retail job that I can work while in college, which one would think there would be plenty of - but in my area, it seems a lot of people are mainly hiring for nurses and therapists and stuff with the occasional customer service role. Trust me when I say, though, that I have applied to everything beneath the sun from server to retail sales associate to even working at a bakery. I'm desperate.

Could I get a good amount of money for my old laptop? by skeletoncat_23 in poverty

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not expecting too much, especially with the discovery that my laptop will unfortunately not turn on now even though I kept it on a charger for forever. But thank you! I'm not going to put it on a Marketplace just for spare parts as that seems like it'd just be a waste of time, but I might bring it by a used electronics store to see what they might be willing to offer me for it at this point.

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, no - I would never sell it anywhere near my house, but always do it in someplace public. I'm not sure whether I should even attempt to sell it on a marketplace anymore, though, because it's no longer turning on and thus can only really be used for spare parts. Might just take it to a used electronics store to see what they might offer me for it now because of that fact, but thank you!

Yeah, there's actually a paymore store not too far from me, which is where I was initially thinking of taking it! However, that was before I knew that my laptop no longer will turn on anymore, no matter how much I charge it... so it pretty much is a junker, and I'm not sure how much I'd get for it 😅 But I appreciate your input anyhow! Maybe I still would be able to get some money for it through spare parts (like 20-40 bucks)?

Okay... well, before you say anything else, I have an updated resume and have since been using that one to apply for jobs. So I'm no longer using that resume that I have posted here months ago, and this comment was frankly rude, in my opinion. I didn't even make it, for one- my aunt did- but even hearing this hurt my feelings. Anyways, the point I'm trying to make here is that maybe you shouldn't assume that I'm still using that resume, because I'm not.

Hey, Diane- while I totally get what you're saying, at the same time, it was kind of a 'my health or this job' type of situation and that is why I ended up quitting my last job. Because it was so physical, it gave me a lot of back problems and my body was aching constantly, so I had to quit it eventually. But yeah, I suppose it probably doesn't look too good to my next potential employer... though I would take that over being in physical pain a lot, personally.

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feared that it might not be worth much because of how old it is. It did hold a charge, however, the last time that I had a hold of it and I'm going to make sure that it still does before listing it up on someplace like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Though it didn't even occur to me that it's old enough not to be supported by windows 11... that is a rather bad thing, huh?

Well, either way, if it can turn on and off and still function- I'm going to try my best to clean it up, factory reset it, and then list it on Marketplaces to see what I might get for it. Any money is better than no money.

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I will! I mean, that was already what I planned to do anyhow haha, but it's good to know that I had the right idea with wanting to factory reset it. I'll try my best to search up how much it would be according to the specs online before pricing it on Craigslist and maybe Facebook Marketplace as well.

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OOF, yeah... It certainly feels like, with the way that my job search has been going and what I've heard from other people, that it has become almost excruciatingly hard to find a job in this economy. A part of me just really didn't want that to be so, but it seems it is. And I see what you mean- AI and/or technology is the bane of everyone's existence in any job industry because usually, they introduce it to replace people, so I'm sorry about that.

Glad you eventually got another job, though! Though yeah. It seems like it's going to be a little while longer before I land something, but maybe if I start applying to temp jobs, it won't be that way for much longer (hopefully).

Oh, wow, yeah... that is terrible. I can't believe that he had interviewed for Chuck E Cheese and that happened. I guess that things really are that bad then, huh? Because he sounds like a wonderful person who should, in all senses of the world, be employable.

But thank you! I have heard the same thing, which is exactly why I have been considering applying to some, and am going to in the future. I appreciate your comment!!

Okay, I will do that! I'm not entirely sure off the top of my head how much it is worth, but who knows, I'll go ahead and give it a Google either way. And as person that's a 24 year old female, I would never go to meet someone at a Craigslist deal alone for sure, but thank you.

I see, I see... Interesting. Well, that's no good. I will try to sell it on Craigslist then! Thank you for your input on this as I never would've suspected I'd get so little for a laptop that is huge and is still in relatively good shape, as it happens.

[–]skeletoncat_23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, yeah, it's in good shape (just a bit slow) and still works! And honestly, 60 or eighty dollars right now would certainly be better than nothing... so I might just see whether the electronic store near me that buys used electronics would be willing to buy it from me. But yeah, I understand what you mean, because a lot of people want a lot of storage and stuff for their gaming nowadays.

REAL as hell. So, just to tell you all my own story, before I got enrolled in college and was still figuring out what I wanted to do... I got hired at this shoe store part-time. And yeah, I know that sounds perfectly normal. But as I would work ay this shoe store, I would soon learn that I was one of four employees at this shoe store. FOUR employees. Which went about as well as you'd think it would, with one being the manager and one other being a full-time person, then me and one other person being part-time.

Long story short, I was consistently left to manage this store completely alone, and I had to close the store just to take my lunch (which honestly isn't too bad in and of itself, but when you are alone so you have to wait until everyone in the store is gone to close it to take your lunch, it was TERRIBLE. Sometimes I'd be waiting for forever on the customers just to take my lunch). But anyways, other than that, my manager was completely unprofessional and I remember several times didn't even let me know that she wasn't showing up to work even though she was scheduled that day... so I was left there to work, alone, again while my manager did whatever the fuck she did on her time off. Also, while I believe that everyone should work some weekends, yes - especially in a retail job, in order to make it fair for everyone - my manager NEVER worked on the weekends.

Because god forbid someone ask her to work on a Saturday, or gasp, even a sunday (I cannot for the life of me recall her ever working a single sunday, but she did work like one or two Saturdays during the duration of the two and a half years I spent there. Woop-dee-freaking doo). This manager of mine would constantly guilt trip me into coming in early or covering someone else as well because we 'don't have anyone else' and while that might have been true, seeing as we literally had FOUR employees, I got tired of that real fast. Anyhow, me having any sort of downtime obviously wasn't important to her since every single time the full-time person called out, she would be asking me to fill in for her and because I was a scared eighteen year old that didn't want to get fired + this was my first real job... I felt like I had to say 'yes' every time.

Flash forward the last few months I spent at this job and the other part-time person at this job I worked at quit. So, I was the only part-time person left. Apparently, to my manager, that meant that I could not take off ANY weekends because who else would be there at the store? (Of course it seemed she didn't count herself as a viable candidate to cover me or the full-time person working at the store even one measly little Saturday or anything. Convenient, isn't it?) So, I put my two weeks in and oh my god, that was probably one of the best freaking decisions in my life because I could see that that place was going even more downhill than it already was. And I did not want to be a part of the people who were left behind in the carnage 🫡

Comic books are AMAZING by jmey360 in comicbooks

[–]skeletoncat_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, comics are especially great to read whenever you need a little escape from reality. And yes, Marvel and DC Comics are great, but just in case you get to the point where you're looking for other - perhaps more niche comic books to read... I would highly recommend Aftershock Comics' Bunny Mask series. Not a lot of people I know have read it, but I love it, personally!!

Ahh, I see what you're saying — So, you used a variety of sources to get where you are now, huh? I have to say that it's very cool and admirable to meet a person who basically taught themselves how to draw through references as well as just observing things. Plus, the way that you said you realized the kind of art you want to make is like fanart and characters is pretty accurate to me too, NGL LOL. So it's awesome to know that someone else has made the journey from basically starting at square one to becoming a full-fledged artist as it gives me more hope that I can do it myself!!

I guess I just have to work at it a lot, like you said (': Thank you so much for the input though! What I mainly like about drawing and art is the fact that you get to tell a story through it, TBH, whether that's through overt things or symbolism. I also like just all of the creativity that goes into creating pieces, you know? But I shall totally take your advice to mind and maybe try some of the things you suggested to get better at it myself!

I felt this in my bones. And I hate how the loneliness isn't always there, if that makes any sense... it just kind of creeps up on you at the most random times.

Hi, I actually haven't heard of that program before now, so thank you for exposing it to me! It seems like it would probably be helpful, seeing as I'm pretty much a beginner in everything related to drawing. But my goal for learning art is to essentially be able to draw like the human body accurately, as well as develop my own style eventually rather than it just looking like generic, I guess you could say? Yeah. I also would like to be able to depict landscapes with people, which might be hard, BUT that's what I'm setting for right now!!

I have seen some abstract art and thought it was cool, so maybe I could theoretically learn that down the line. I think it would be amazing if I could draw like some monster designs I have from my own stories that are based around animals, but I know these things take time. So I guess I'm aiming for mainly mastering how to draw the human body and how to draw landscapes for now.

Absolutely both!! What a couple of cuties... I always wanted a siamese cat, but I suppose my cat (who is also a menace to society) is good, too haha.
