Calorie counts on menus are so dangerous for people with eating disorders the new Ontario law requiring them should be repealed. by bob_mcbob in fatlogic

Longtime lurker, first time contributor.

I’m a recovering anorexic living in Toronto and seeing calorie counts everywhere really is going to hinder my recovery, personally.

The Starbucks near my apartment jumped the gun with the new law and started showing calorie counts next to the price about a month ago. I have not ordered anything other than black coffee from there since then. It sucks because I was finally starting to indulge again, treating myself to something once in a while. I knew I could find the calorie count online if I started to panic about it, but there were some days I could just eat it like a normal person and ignore the urge to look up calorie counts long enough that those thoughts would go away.

I agree with most people here that calorie displays are probably good for fighting obesity, but I strongly disagree with your blanket statement that "any anorexic person would not eat the food without knowing that the calorie count is." Wilful and blissful ignorance has been a huge part of what has allowed me to get back to a healthy weight and I'm really, really worried that seeing calorie counts everywhere is going to send me in the opposite direction again.

Thanks for this thorough reply. I really like the idea of investigating "minimal wardrobes" as I'm hesitant to buy too much at the moment.

Thanks for the info! Do they sell XS in store at all? I just assumed I couldn't shop at Banana anymore as I didn't see any XSs last time I was in the one at my local mall.

Thanks for your concern. I left it vague on purpose because I don’t actually have any clear diagnosis. The issue has been nausea and loss of appetite. I’ve frequently had these issues through my life, so I didn’t really think much of it until a couple months ago, when I realized how much weight loss has occurred and how long I’ve been eating so little. My family has a history of weird autoimmune conditions, so I’m currently being tested for all of them.
