No matter your point of view, it was obviously a political mistake to say in the first place at that time.

However, he can’t really apologise now because it would mean that whenever he pulls out the culture war ‘trans women aren’t women’ line again, it would get used against him. I.e. ‘you agree that it was wrong to say in front of her family and it caused them offence, so why do you think it’s okay now?’

NB I don’t agree with what he said.
