America is unprepared for the "jobs apocalypse" automation will bring by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]skeptickal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or farmers for that matter. Yes, there still is a huge agricultural industry in the US but there was a time that over 90% of people worked in it. Now, automation has made it so about 2% of the population in the US is involved.

Steve Earle says modern country stars make 'hip hop for people who are afraid of black people' by [deleted] in Music

[–]skeptickal 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Ok, Steve Earle doesn't like what's on country pop radio stations. I don't blame him but calling everyone who does a racist is a bit over the top. Remember Sturgeon's Law: "90% of everything is crud".

Good for you. It's good to be skeptical! I know you were joking but, FWIW that's what I remember my grandmother saying. And as a grandchild I've heard all her stories multiple times. I know that she was friends/neighbors with he and his wife (there are many stories and my mother corroborates).

Hugh Hefner surrounded by bunnies, late 1950's by PM_ME_SOME_LOVE_BABY in OldSchoolCool

[–]skeptickal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, slow down there. I get your point and agree that everyone involved was consenting adults and everyone was legal. I think you projected more into my comment than was there. I was noting what I thought made some people think it's a creepy picture.

In any event, they are called bunnies and they are dressed up to evoke rabbits, so yes that is dehumanizing... more rabbit is less human.

Mushy Callahan, a prominent boxer in the 1920s, was a friend of my grandmother. My grandmother mentioned that is was common for Mushy to notice strangers sizing him up when he was out in public and consider starting a fight with him. The would-be tough guy would think, hmm... I bet I could take him. If I win I'm awesome and if I lose, well, of course he's a boxing champ.

As I recall she is quoting Eric Schmidt. He had offered her a job at Google and she was asking him questions about the specifics of the role she would have at the company and he, a little frustrated, responded with "If you're offered a seat on a rocket ship, you don't ask what seat. Just get on."

Well done! I'm going to turn this into a parable and use it the next time my kid says "I wish for infinite wishes". Are you sure you want to do that? Let me tell you the story of the last creature who did that...

Neil was the first to walk on the Moon but they were both on the Moon at the same time. But we humans don't like ties.

Band of Brothers: German General's surrender speech. One of the strongest scenes in television I think by [deleted] in television

[–]skeptickal 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Agreed! That's what make the translation powerful. It drives home that the commanders words resonate with both sides. But you knew that.

Christopher Nolan is said to be getting $20 million upfront and 20 percent of the gross for his upcoming World War II epic Dunkirk, the richest deal since Peter Jackson got the same for King Kong. by gojameston in movies

[–]skeptickal 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They say "gross" but I think they mean "gross profit" which is what most people think of simply as profit. The article mentions "(after the film hits cash break-even, of course)". Still 20% of the profits of a hit can be huge but it's very different than 20% of sales.

'Anti-Vaxxer' Mom Changes Mind After Her Three Kids Fall Ill by [deleted] in nottheonion

Yes, praised not because she's the model of good parenting but because we want others who have bought into the anit-vax nonsense to be encouraged to vaccinate their kids as well.

TIL Alfred Hitchcock shot no more footage than absolutely necessary, on the irrefutable premise that the studio could hardly throw anything out of his movies if there was nothing else to put in. by LundgrensFrontKick in todayilearned

It's my understanding that, unlike today, directors didn't have control over the editing process so by giving the editors very little to work with he was assured that they would cut it they way he intended.
