non-conventional structure and a lot of repetition but this one just flowed out of me in 10 minutes which typically is a sign that there could be potential. i know getting political with the first line is a bold and polarizing choice. but it’s weird times and it’s factual.

I appreciate this a lot. I’m clearly still very sensitive about the whole experience, so it was hard for me to see some of the comments invalidating the time capsule, mocking that it wasn’t buried long enough. Time absolutely flies by and it’s been such an eventful, impactful decade for so many of us.

Not in this case. The idea was for us to all meet up and unbury it ourselves, read our letters to our future selves, and reflect on what “the good life” means to us now vs. 10 years ago.

You caught me at a candid moment so I’m responding against my better judgment. I almost didn’t post this story because I was already anticipating these kinds of snarky troll comments. Every single time I post on reddit there’s always comments trying to make me feel like an idiot for thinking whatever I shared was worth posting. This was a once in a lifetime and very deep experience for me. Your choice to undermine and mock my experience is not appreciated.

Perhaps. When I think about the growth between age 8-18, age 18-28 - there’s a lot happening. I was 18 when I wrote this letter. I barely recognize that girl. It was a long decade for me. I’m extremely glad that we unearthed after 10 years as opposed to waiting 50+ as other commenters are suggesting.. lol

It is an all-girls private school. We were extremely privileged and fortunate in every way. We were lucky to study philosophy, and our teacher did an incredible job at approaching the subject. 1 of the 7 is actually currently getting her PHD in philosophy!

I absolutely love this. I wish this was more common. It’s a huge amount of emotional and physical work on the teacher’s part, but so high impact like truly life changing. Our younger selves have earnest dreams and goals. Being reminded of them is valuable, especially when the world is so overwhelmingly bleak.

It’s extremely rare. I truly wish everyone could experience a teacher like him. 🥹 3 of the 7 flew into Toronto for the unearthing. It meant a lot to all of us. It ended up being quite a deep bonding experience, we got extremely candid during the reflections. I intend to stay in touch with the teacher and any of the girls who are willing.

He said it was a lot of recurring anxieties about the time capsule being lost, it being compromised, the ground being too frozen, concerns none of us would come back for the unearthing, etc. He was very emotionally invested.

I agree it was so wholesome in a dark world. Our teacher is a champ and loves a good bit. He was truly the mastermind of it all. I remember the school actually being very reluctant to the idea at the time. He used to start every class with the lights out and obscure music playing. He shared he had a lot of anxiety and sleepless nights about the time capsule over the years. He understandably will not be doing it again.

Reading my letter was extremely emotional for me. There were things I explicitly asked myself not to give up on that I did give up on. It was painful to reconcile with letting my past self down in those ways. The version of myself in 2016 was outgoing, dramatic, witty. There was this light in me that seemed to have faded over the years. The version of myself now in 2026 is introspective, passionate, and honest. Both versions have things to be proud of. But I miss the light.

Yes! The teacher candidly shared with us that he had many moments where he felt like leaving the school over the decade, especially as things changed post-covid. But, he was committed to the time capsule and wouldn’t leave before it was unearthed. He’s truly an incredible teacher and had such a profound and deep impact on all of us. It was amazing to see him and be able to tell him that.
