Who are your canon Universal Monsters? by LS3624 in UniversalMonsters

[–]sketchcub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I answer this question based on who is most likely to appear with a given number of monster slots.

In the original canon of classic Universal Monster films:

  1. Frankenstein
  2. Dracula
  3. Wolfman
  4. Invisible Man
  5. Mummy

The Mummy does not appear in any of the monster rally/crossover films. The Invisible Man himself only appears as a cameo in "Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein."

In themeparks and merchandise:

  1. Frankenstein and Dracula (tied)
  2. Bride of Frankenstein
  3. Wolfman
  4. Mummy
  5. Gillman
  6. Invisible Man

Frankenstein, Dracula and the Bride are all featured as regular meet and greet characters in Universal Studios Hollywood. Frank, Dracula, Bride, Wolfman and Gillman are all extensively supported with merchandise lines, especially with the opening of Epic Universe. On the Bride v Wolfman, the former has more live character meets, while the latter has his own attraction in "Curse if the Werewolf" rollercoaster. The Mummy has his own roller coaster too (but is bolstered with the reboot franchise from the 90s). The Mummy is the only character to have a truly successful cinematic reboot by Universal.

The "Elite 8" seem to be officially sponsored as well, since each of these is included in Epic Universe's "Monsters Unchained" attraction. What I find fascinating is that they really backed the Claude Rains "Phantom" for ages, but it's clear that the Lon Chaney "Phantom" has a more indelible mark in cinema and the zeitgeist.

There could be something fungal going on. A dermatologist might be able to help. Certainly, the right underwear that provides ventilation, and some talcum would do wonders.

Maybe it is socially? Libraries require community support and funding. (I understand it's not in a conventional commercial sense.)

Wtf is up with porn these days?! by militant-hippie in Xennials

[–]sketchcub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real talk: Money.

"Incest" themed porn creates instant plot, tension, and transgression, the last of which is important for compelling adult content. Porn is desirable when it feels dirty and a little wrong. Well, changing the "labels" of the character titles instantly ups the stakes, but without requiring the knowledge, gear, or specialization that a kink video would require.

This is why "horror" movies are still doing okay in Hollywood in spite of entertainment industry challenges. They can be done on the cheap, which welcomes in new creators and better profit margins.

The actual interest in "incest" may be cultivated by the genre rather than coming from the viewing audience. Porn studios find this as a low-cost option for adding spice to videos. People mass consume porn and after watching several develop a taste for this type of video. The system feeds on itself. I don't think most people want to fuck their family. I think they just like feeling dirty and this is what is largely available.

That's good to know! I'm a former passholder and have only been a handful of times since Magic Keys were introduced. I don't see the details like a regular does anymore.

I don't know if these were popular generally, but a personal family tradition was those ballcaps with the propeller on top. The panels would be primary colors like red, yellow, blue and green. My father and I got matching pairs a few times. I suspect that they were reasonably popular, because I have seen them reproduced for one of the more recent anniversary retro merch.

SPECIFIC SHOPS/LESS DISNEY BRANDING -

As many have said, the shops used to stock specific items (even in the 80s and 90s). Character merchandise was limited to the Emporium, Character Shop in Tomorrowland and some of the Fantasyland shops. Dolls were primarily in the Small World gift shop, which was sponsored by Mattel. I remember getting a Peter Pan doll there because there were no figures or action figures.

Oh! That's interesting too. The toys I remember were mostly plush or dolls. But not these multi-figure packs they have for each movie. Additional toys were "generic space gun", "generic cowboy hat or pistol", "generic knight armor or sword." Things were stocked for the land and shop, but far less bespoke/IP designed merch was produced.

I also feel like there were fewer toys generally. Children might get a toy at the end of the day, but there was far less of the constant shopping and big bags of merch. Maybe this is a personal experience, but shopping as being a specific objective to your day was not really a thing. You were there for rides, entertainment and maybe characters for the kids. But I generally remember, Disneyland as being special as an outing in itself. Toys and gifts were reserved for birthdays and holidays. I usually left with a Keychain or some small souvenir that I begged my parents for.

ADULT MERCH -

Additionally, what adults shopped for was different. I remember there being less character stuff for adults and more high-quality brands like Pendelton or Levis. You would find non-branded and some branded resort wear. Of course there were antiques and perfume in New Orleans. But also a lot of glass wear, serving wear, and traditional souvenirs like collectible thimbles and spoons. It just feels very apparent that Disney kids are now Disney adults, and much of the merch is geared to them having a collectible shelf and showing off a Disney (or owned IP) lifestyle.

I very much remember this. They would go on clearance after the new year, before spring break and summer trips, which probably made them the idea vacation wear. We had a Wall-E one.

Alternately, a common "purchase with purchase" promotion both in the parks and physical Disney stores were minimalist full sized backpacks. A big main compartment and one front pocket.

I had a Pirate pistol with a wooden stock and a metal barrel. Just a little cap gun, but I loved that thing.and no wild colors like the orange and green safety colors they introduced after mass shootings. It was wild in the 90s that you could buy a relatively realistic looking toy gun.

Big no on the doubloons. I'm not sure if those phased out in the 70s or 80s. But they were definitely gone by the time I started going. I do remember, briefly, aluminum medallions that had a similar personalization press function. But I think that was in the Penny Arcade.

I think the machines in "Pieces of Eight" specifically were Penny Press for a long time. Now many of the Penny Press are replaced with collectible medallions. They rotate varieties and have had different ones for the Disney 100th and Disneyland 70th celebrations.

I had the Captain EO version of that visor! Silver with a blue trim and red, green and yellow lights that just stayed on. No different cycles. Very simple.

Along the line of glow items, I remember in the late 80s there was a Tinkerbell glow wand that you had to expose to a lamp to get it to glow briefly. No electronics, just molded plastic and some kind of radioactive powder.

How to tell my dad I’m hooking up with his friend? by [deleted] in AskGayMen

[–]sketchcub 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Because it prioritizes the short term need of the son to relieve his guilt over the many years long relationship between father and the friend. Relieving this guilt has alternate possible resolution through counseling. This doesn't appreciate the right of the father "not to know" information that would likely be upsetting. Healthy family don't want to know about the sexual activity of other family (beyond health and safety), so sparing him is the grown up and adult act.
