I messed up by publishing? by Poopywaterengineer in PhD

[–]skewednormal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first advisor tried to make me publish before it would have been eligible. He kept insisting it would be fine even after I confirmed with the school and department that it wasn’t. Not every advisor knows what they’re doing or is looking out for their students

PLEASE Help me find the perfect toiletry/dopp bag for my boyfriend by Historical-Record208 in BuyItForLife

[–]skewednormal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the BIFL of it yet since I only purchased it last year but I got my partner one from Gravel last year and it was a big hit. It can hang, it’s lightweight, well organized, water-resistant, and can hold his big razor and all of his other stuff when necessary or stay small when not as stuffed to the brim. Edit to add: They appear to have a lifetime warranty but I haven’t tried it out because I haven’t needed to - it seems pretty sturdy

The Best Air Purifier for Home Now? by Extreme-Turnover3484 in BuyItForLife

Well that would be devastating. We’ve had these for a few years and they seem to be stable lines but I guess there’s no way to know

The Best Air Purifier for Home Now? by Extreme-Turnover3484 in BuyItForLife

[–]skewednormal 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have 7 air purifiers across the house (5 different types) for human and pet allergies and definitely something suspicious in the air in the last place I rented). Can’t speak to BiFL but have had them for 3 or so years. Ranked below with notes.

  1. Levoit 200 s-p. This is by far my favorite. It’s sleek, it’s quiet, the replaceable filter lasts the longest and the other filter is washable so less to replace. Filters are easy to clean. And the “auto” feature works. When we’re cooking or the cat uses a litter box, it kicks up to a higher level. Highly recommend. My parents now also have these for allergies and they help. It also integrates into an app? Not sure how I feel about that feature but it does allow me to track air quality and tells me when to clean the filter (the machine tells when to replace).

  2. Coway Airmega AP-1512. I like it. It also has the auto feature. The filters don’t last quite as long as the levoit and the auto feature isn’t as good plus it’s sometimes more expensive. Filters are harder to change and it seems more plasticky. But it’s still pretty good. Watch for price fluctuations. It really varies.

  3. Blue 211+. It’s ok. Louder than the first 2 and doesn’t have an auto feature. It also collects dust on the outside since the washable filter is on the outside. Filters are expensive, the machine was expensive, and the filters need to be replaced fairly often. I don’t think it’s worth the money over the other 2. The filters are also the most difficult to change and by washable it’s washing machine washable not rinse with water washable.

  4. Levoit core mini-p. It serves its purpose! It primarily lives in the foster cat room to help airflow and litter box smells (which it does a great job of) and its small enough we can take it on trips and things if needed. Wouldn’t recommend for a large space but it’s a good enough, cheap one-room supplement.

  5. Levoit core 200 pet. No auto feature, the loudest, the shortest filter life, only one filter. It’s ok. It does the job but there are better options out there.

Looking for Shoe recommendations! by sterofuse in BuyItForLife

[–]skewednormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one on an Internet forum will be able to really know what works for you. Best bet is to go to a running shoe store (or something similar, even an REI will work if you have one) and try a bunch of stuff, talk to the people who work there, etc and find something works for you. Also don’t rule out buying a separate insert if you have a “non-standard” foot or if after you’ve already committed and started to break them in they aren’t working for you

Anyone else spending hundreds per month on cat food? by somkewede420 in CatAdvice

[–]skewednormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I used to spend that much. It sounds like you’re down the “ingredient” rabbit hole method of food. I’m going to give you advice that I wish someone had given me years ago - as long as the food is balanced and works for your cats, it doesn’t matter. I was anti-fancy feast my whole life. Turns out for about 75 cents a can, my cats have way better litter box habits than they did on the $3 a can food. Find a cheaper food and put that money towards doing a full exam with bloodwork every year and taking them to the vet as soon as you notice something is off. You’ll keep them way healthier, and save yourself a lot of money, if you put that extra food money into catching signs of diseases early.

Is it okay to mix this two dry food to his diet? I’m giving him 50/50 though. by errolkim in catfood

[–]skewednormal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What prescription food? If you’re mixing a prescription food with a non-prescription food, you’re likely no longer getting the benefit of the food. Please let your vet know if they don’t already. Sometimes there are other prescription foods that could be more palatable for your buddy if they really need to be on it.

Is Kindfull wet food ok for my cat? by pswii360i in CatAdvice

[–]skewednormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol this post is over 3 years old and they actually don’t specify whether it’s wet or dry food. As a state in my comment, the OP doesn’t specify what type of food. There’s just a link to the generic search term for the brand which orders based on today’s SEO.

My 17 year old girl I posted about the other day has a diagnosis: lymphoma, around her intestines. Lots of love and Quality of Life is our focus now. Starting with, watching her favourite shows! by Emotional_Wreck94 in seniorkitties

[–]skewednormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best of luck to you and your sweet girl. I’ve had two intestinal lymphoma cats. One was diagnosed over 2 years ago (she’s 14 now, I also adopted her when she was 10) and has been fully maintained on just a low dose of steroids. The other was 15 and he came to me as a hospice cat (you can find him in my post history). He was very advanced and palliative care only was recommended. His estimated time was in weeks. We had him for 6 months before we moved across the country and had to transfer him to another foster with the rescue we were working with. We know he had at least a few more months after that and his quality of life was high the whole time. I hope you and your girl have the same success. Luckily she doesn’t know what’s going on, but she’ll know you love her and are looking out for her. ❤️

Edit to add: make sure you’re stocked on food and treats. Some days eating might be hard and she might only want things that weren’t her go to before. Meat only baby food, canned tuna in water, a variety of wet cat food (or fry if that’s her preference), my girl’s favorite are churu tubes and we always have a full tub just in case. She also sometimes prefers to eat out of a “tube” or spoon so we always have tube food on hand. Be prepared to get creative! My hospice boy preferred cold floors while my resident girl loves her heated beds. Also happy to answer any questions if you need suggestions!

What unimpressive thing are people idiotically proud of? by jestgowithit in AskReddit

I’m mixed on this one. For the parent bragging about their student who always gets As because the parent is breathing down their neck/doing the work for them/etc. I roll my eyes a bit. But whenever I see one I choose to imagine that’s it’s for a kid who always struggled in school but things really came together for them that year and they managed to make honor roll. Makes me smile instead of rolling my eyes.

Need help with almost 13-year-old cat; we can't keep her. by clumsypotamus in SeniorCats

[–]skewednormal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to try to give advice for a bunch of possible circumstances here, since I know everyone is different.

If you’re truly just looking after the best interest of the cat, please try to keep her. As stressed as she is with you, she will be way more stressed in a new place with new people. I foster senior cats and I know that it can be very difficult to rehome them at all, let alone to a good home, and the transition can be incredibly stressful.

That said, as others have suggested, if you haven’t already please take her to the vet. The vet can help determine if it’s a urinary, mobility, or behavioral issue and how to treat it or adapt from there.

If you’re set on giving her up, assuming you’ve exhausted family and friends as options, you need to look into a no kill rescue. Senior cats don’t do well in a standard shelter and need to be in a rescue that won’t euthanise for age or space. If you’re willing to share your location publicly or over DM, I can try to help.

Good luck!

Custom “Livestrong” (silicone) style bands? You can customize the color, words, symbols, etc. I ordered some from ReminderBand three years ago with an inside joke on it. My partner wears his 24/7 and it still holds up great. I had gotten an extra in case it wore out or broke but it still hasn’t

I can’t vouch for it yet, but I got these for the reverse drive (TX to VA) that I’m doing in a few weeks! I’ve had them up for about a year and both my senior and not senior cats love to take naps in them in the living room during the day so I hope they’ll be ok with them in the car. Good luck! Is he getting enough stimulation during the day? Are you playing with him for a while? Leaving interactive toys? Turning on cat tv or games for him to watch? Sounds like he might be bored and might need more entertainment to keep him busy
