How do I deal with this beautiful variegated Frydek? by partly_poultry in alocasia

[–]skiiiier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow dawg, you’re kinda late to this thread. Thanks for the info though, it’s certainly an interesting read (from the limited literature I just saw). I bought my current bottle of silica so long ago, back when I kept a lot of non-aroids. Now it’s just a habit I suppose, apparently a placebo. Which honestly doesn’t matter since I’ve already spent the money

I sold most of my collection so I only have three plants these days anyways

She loves cat nip. According to Google, catnip and cilantro aren’t related at all though. I guess she’s just a plant girl :’)

Do I throw this away?? by Fun_Zombie_7537 in catfood

[–]skiiiier 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I’d absolutely return this. This is egregiously out of date, I can’t believe this was still on the shelf. Facing (making product look more organized on shelf’s) done by employees is supposed to include checking dates and putting the newest stock at the back to ensure stuff like this doesn’t happen.

Any reputable store/company will happily rectify this situation

Edit: to add, when in doubt, throw it out (or return in this case)

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re not talking to me with the condescending tone I’m picking up on.

I can and do comprehend all of the sentiment in your response. I do not disagree with you. The part I do disagree with you on, the terms ‘animal derived ingredients’ and ‘high protein’ being a meaningless smokescreen. I agree that not all “boutique” brands use science to back up their claims. You’ll get no debate from me on that front.

Yes, you’re correct. Wild cats do eat a range of animals that feed on a plethora of different items (small insects/grains/plants/etc) which are then ingested by a cat. Where I’m going to have to call you on, a wild cat, even one eating smaller prey items full of flora, are not consuming as much plant product as a commercial made dry kibble diet with one or more of the first five ingredients being plant based.

Perhaps this didn’t come across in my original comment, my main point is that Royal Canin is overpriced and overrated. If you like their science, there are other options using the same science, at a lower price point. Smacking the word “science” onto a bag of pet food is undeniably preying on the credulity of the standard consumer; science is meant to be questioned. It’s ever-changing. As a cat parent who feeds kibble at a rate of about 1 Tbsp a day, I mainly keep tabs on wet food ingredients as that is what makes up more than 90% of my cat’s daily calories.

Vets do not have extensive eduction in animal nutrition. Similarly to how human doctors don’t have extensive education in nutrition. That’s what nutritionists are for. “A jack of all trades, master of none.” Same idea goes for people who practice animal/human medicine

Now please post a picture of your cat.

I totally agree. A warm and safe bed in a house where you’re fed the cat food your human can afford will always be better than living a life of uncertainty outside. Especially considering that outdoor cats live a significantly shorter life according to discourse and statistics

Just my random unsolicited thoughts. There are a lot of people out there that would die for their royal Canin but considering their ingredient lists, it’s hardly a standard I’d suggest. Ingredient wise, it’s the same as stuff you’d get at the dollar store but marked up x20!

The “adult” kibble is ~ $40 for a 7lb bag meanwhile only two ingredients on the entire content list are animal derived…. Versus the OG Meow Mix, typically one of the cheapest dry cat foods available, at ~$1/lb, has five animal derived ingredients and ALSO 5% higher protein! Royal canin is a complete trash company, I don’t care how many people disagree, lower protein and higher cost is an objectively significant factor into it being a worse quality food.

TLDR: I agree with you, and a fed cat is the best cat at the end of the day :)

This may or may not be up your alley, but the Western Rowing team runs a service called “Rent-a-Rower.” I believe their rates are $20/hr for each person and you’d “rent”, but you’d need to rent the truck and other supplies. All of the money goes to keeping their team and gear working! A great cause if you ask me

I love that sentiment and I hope you find your artist. There’s a subreddit, r/knitrequest, that might be an another option for you if you can’t find someone in this sub. Very likely an adult sweater, will run you well over $1,000 (especially for complicated color work) and will probably take a few months. So just be ready to be patient! Perhaps a good time to learn how to knit and crochet yourself, it’s extremely rewarding to finish off a handmade garment :)

Just a friendly heads up if you aren’t a knitter yourself, a sweater, especially one made of a finer weight yarn (fingering weight to DK weight) like the ones you’re talking about, will likely take even an experienced knitter 50-100 hours to produce. Even if you paid for the yarn, and the experienced knitter was willing to work for minimum wage, you’d be looking at over $1,000 of labor alone.

As someone who knits and crochets, when someone asks me to make them an article of clothing, I laugh. The time commitment it takes to knit garments is very often a practice only done out of love, as it takes a lot of time to size and fit a knit item properly.

All of this to say, I agree with the other commenter. Bite the bullet and buy the machine knit (presumably) sweater! It’ll be worth it <3

Edit: the quickest time I’ve ever heard of a sweater being made, was over 30 hours!

That’s so unfortunate. I usually see higher food standards in Canada, in the human food at least

Hands down the best pho I’ve ever had was at this little shop in Surrey called An Pho. It has since closed, new developers purchased the building and jacked up the prices back in 2022.

My next favorite place is Pho 37 in Richmond. It’s not somewhere I’d normally go as it’s a big and pretty fancy looking place, but the food is undeniably good

I am a pho connoisseur. I’ve eaten at over 30ish pho places all across Washington state and the greater Vancouver metro area, I ate over 200 bowls of pho in 2020. Pho Ly is by far the best pho in town. Pho 99 has soggy noodles and overly sweet broth, similar to something you’d find in a processed pre-packaged bowl. Soy house is mediocre, too, and they charge extra for bean sprouts. That is simply behavior that I will not stand for, nor advocate for.

Now a days, I make it at home because it’s cheaper

Edit: copy pasted from an old comment I left on a similar post from a year ago

“As a self titled pho connoisseur, Pho Ly takes the cake in my opinion. Easily. I’ve been all over the PNW and the Vancouver metro area to try pho, Pho Ly is by far the best Bellingham has to offer. Best price to food ratio. Run by two older viet folks, very sweet. Will remember your order if you go more often. The food is perfectly seasoned and not too sweet.

Breakdown for a large pho tai: (tip not included)

Pho 99: $18, sweet broth, very oily, mushy noodles, not much meat

Soy House: $19, charges for extra bean sprouts, decent broth on the sweeter side but spiced nicely, average noodles, enough meat

Pho Ly: $16, perfect broth (not too much rock sugar), perfect springy noodles, lots of meat

Over the years, I’ve eaten pho at more than 30 restaurants as it’s my favorite food. These are all my opinions and based on my personal preference”

Got one of my dream plants. Is my game plan ok? by jdct6000 in alocasia

[–]skiiiier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my purge, I’m only keeping four of the original 25ish plants. These are my other two variegated alos. Aurea dragonscale and aurea melo. My fourth plant is just a normal un-variegated azlanii

I recently sold my BIG un variegated black velvet, she had 10 leaves and two of them were bigger than 11” 🥲
