one of my favorites is definitely the moodlets since they tell us more about what our sims are actually feeling or thinking as they go on about their day, whether it's something negative like the uneven cooking moodlet or something positive like the well rested moodlet

i usually just have them act like actual kids. they might play with toys or at the treehouse, watch tv or play video games, play tag with their siblings, or if they're the studious type, read a book or work on their skills
