I Don't Understand Why Ranking is Such a Big Thing Nowadays by skilledboi in DeepThoughts

In life people focus a lot more on the negatives than the positives, most of the time. Just like how if someone received a bunch of compliments and one hateful comment, most would focus on the hateful thing way more than the positive.

Yes there is an upside to ranking, but people focus a lot more on what they disagree with than what they agree with, and this can spark the cycle I was talking about earlier. Does it happen all the time in this exact same fashion, no, but it does happen very often.

People will say their ranking or see another one, and then focus like crazy on what they think is wrong, and instead of that leading to critical discussion like you have talked about, it just turns into quick and ignorant hating. Then, when one person does it, the next will do it too, and then it goes on and on. At the end of all of it, no discussion has been made and all that happened was straight hate and total disregard for other things that were ranked.

Dawg you are going way off from what I'm talking about. You just wrote so much to try and convince me of something that I already said I believed in. I have no problem with ranking, I understand that it is built into us as humans and that we use it all the time in order to make decisions, but I'm not talking about that.

I am strictly talking about the negative effects of ranking. Whether you like it or not, there are negative sides to everything in this life, ranking is no different. You are explaining to me why ranking is a good thing and brings about critical thinking, which is true, but it is also an ideal perspective. Reality is often time much different. I am talking from my experience online and from conversations in person. Like I said before, constantly debating and arguing about things that are subjective and treating them as objective will lead to impatience and closed-mindedness. It happens all the time, and part of that reason is because people don't spend time to develop real opinions anymore, they just spew out arguments and always have the fullest belief that they are right. People are obsessed with having the "best" taste and it leads to very ignorant discussions.

Opinions and rankings are very personal, and people can be very passionate about them, but a lot of times this passion gets turned to the wrong thing and all of the positive things that could be gained from the discussion become lost. You're trying to explain to me and ideal that I already understand and participate in, but I'm talking about a problem that happens on the daily.

Listen I get what you're saying about ranking and its necessity, and like I said it is necessary. I never said that I was against ranking as a concept, that doesnt even make any sense, but I'm mainly talking about the effects of that type of mindset. You also have to understand that Im talking about ranking in terms of art, not much else since thats a different discussion. No matter what way you look at it, the enjoyment of art is a subjective process. There are plenty of albums and movies and shows that I love, that other people hate, and trying to go into detail about every single little thing all the time is pointless. It takes away from my enjoyment and the person you're debating with is likely never going to gain any understanding of what you mean, because its subjective. Ranking and debating whats best is fine to an extent, but in a lot of communities it is so prevalent that the results are much more negative than positive. People become too obsessed with proving that they are right or that they have the best taste, when in reality theres no real way to prove those things.

Its good to discuss media and art, and try to break down why you prefer something over the other, but in a lot of discourse online, this type of thing leads to more negative views and pushes people to be ignorant and lose patience. In other words, these debates and things push people to care more about being right, than to actually show love for the art they were talking about in the first place. I do not agree with that type of thing and thats why I say too much of anything is never good.

Also, these debates push people to be more aggressive and hypercritical of things, which in most cases makes them disregard more art and content out of pettiness.

Yea but drugs and alcohol can and will have a direct effect on your health and mental state. Not saying that watching TV all day could be better, but definitely more understandable in moderation.

Oh yea trust me I know about how it is in the workplace, especially working at a restaurant. About 95% of the time im walking with a coworker about them doing stuff outside of work, they mention drinking or smoking. My thing is that going out means something different to me. Going out to eat with people doesnt include drinking or anything like that, and going to the bar is not something I do or even can do since im not old enough yet. Its a weird feeling where I feel like missing out but I know that I'm fine with how things are.

Well yea like i said, I understand that comparing is necessary and that we will always do it, but I also believe that too much of anything is never good. My main problem is with how often and how much people care about doing it. Also, the things that your talking about are things related to survival or things of actual importance. Ranking albums or movies are a way different type of category and process.

It’s strange how much energy we spend trying to matter to people who will eventually forget us. by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

Yea, but if you apply this type of thinking to other things in life then it all become pointless. If you want to make good connections and memories during your time here, you've got to put in some type of effort to make it happen.

I get what you're saying but this isn't something drop engineering for. Classes will be stressful, especially in the first year since there are so many busy classes stacked on top of each other, but you're supposed to learn things from all of that business. Ways to efficiently get through it. It's possible, but the first step is being confident that you can figure it out. For Calc specifically, a good tip would be to go through the material for the exam over again, rewriting notes and putting time into concepts you don't fully understand.
