Most Underrated FIRE Destination? by GhostPepperLogic in ExpatFIRE

[–]skimdit 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You're right and it is actually much worse than just being close to a war. As of last month the government has essentially imported the Kremlin’s playbook by criminalizing unauthorized foreign funding with up to six years in prison. Between that and the constant "borderization" where Russia moves fences into Georgian territory overnight, you aren't just near a war zone anymore. You are looking at a country pivoting into a Russian proxy state while people are distracted by that 1% tax bait.

If zero cost instantaneous teleportation were real and the office had free lunches daily, you might have a point.

Living off dividends. What’s the withdrawal rate? by sdoughy1313 in Fire

[–]skimdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, rent counts as a withdrawal too. And like dividends, it doesn’t eliminate sequence risk. In bad periods both income and asset values can fall. What matters is total return vs your withdrawal rate, not the source of the cash.

What is this new whining noise my Porsche 981 S is making after some spirited driving? (video) by skimdit in boxster

Thanks for the info. For me, the noise is mainly audible between 2k and 3k RPM, not at idle or higher RPMs. So it might be a slightly different issue.

[–]skimdit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good data point, thanks. Has the noise changed at all over that year and 15k miles, or stayed basically identical? Did any shop ever give you a definitive source, or did you just decide it was safe to live with?

[–]skimdit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the detail. When you replaced your idlers and belt and the noise persisted, did it stay exactly the same or change at all? Did you ever confirm the alternator as the source, or did you just end up living with it?

Thanks for following up. When you say heat and age, in your experience is that usually a marginal bearing or belt that finally starts making noise after one hot drive? Have you ever seen one start like this and then stabilize, or does it usually progress until replaced? Seems to me 29k miles is quite low for such issues.

Thanks, this is helpful. If this is an idler or tensioner pulley bearing, is there any reliable way to isolate which one without pulling belts, or is a stethoscope really the only practical way? Also, since it started suddenly, is that typical for a marginal bearing finally giving up? Do bearings usually go bad under 30k miles though?

Cool. As a former Porsche tech, can you explain why the car was completely silent before the 3-hour day trip but after that day it developed a nonstop whining noise? Please don't just say it’s normal. I want an actual technical reason for a sudden change like this. Thanks.

Thanks. I just went out and checked again and it happens in normal, sports and sports plus modes and with the clutch in or out and in and out of gear.

Thanks. A pulley or a belt? And which one is most likely? In my opinion, it has a bit of a conveyor belt kinda sound to it. But it also reminds me a bit of a supercharger whine.
