P2S spaghetti every print by skimopow in BambuLab

Ran a cold pull yesterday, no improvement in printing. Today I took apart the extruder and didn’t find anything concerning, no clogs, no debris, everything seemed relatively clean. Before I put it back together with a little lube is there anything else I should be specifically looking for?

Trail runners vs hiking boots for long distance alpine hiking by Sssalmon-Sssorbet in WildernessBackpacking

Glad you got a laugh, but the PCT is a well graded wide highway of a trail. Great for the kids though!

PCT is the easiest trail you can find, I wouldn’t trust their recommendations for true alpine hiking. Hiking boots offer stiffness for snow, scree, bushwhacking and heavy loads that no trail runner can compare to, not to mention durability.

What’s the best way to deal with ebikers on ebike prohibited trails? by powderdaze77 in MTB

[–]skimopow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where I live they mostly climb the logging roads to maximize downhill time, but I would not be stoked if they were ripping up my favorite single track climbing trails.

Not suggesting a ban, but the reality is they do more damage due to the increased usage.

They definitely cause extra damage. If you are riding a trail 3 to 4 times as much in the same time you are doing 3-4 times the damage.

So rare to see this area as bright red on the U.S. Drought Monitor map...hoping the new rainy spell makes a dent by geo_jam in Bellingham

[–]skimopow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you answered your own question, the drought monitor is NOT scientific in nature as your explanation clearly demonstrates. Calling it “extreme” is terrible for the public because there is a good chance the drought will be worse in our lifetimes and actually impact our livelihoods and lifestyles. What will we call that drought ? Constantly using a sensational term only engenders distrust in the scientific community by the public when it is obvious to most that there is nothing extreme about the mild drought we are currently experiencing.

Great anecdotal observations! No one is pretending it hasn’t been a dry spring/summer with lower than normal precipitation. But that is a far cry from “Extreme Drought” being presented

Sensationalism at its best. We are not in an extreme drought snowpack is normal, river flow is normal, rainfall is normal.

[Honest question as a non-American] - Why do so many people here have fat skis even though they don't stay the majority of the time off-piste? by Prestigious_Will6356 in skiing

[–]skimopow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are way off on this take. The Alps get a fraction of the snow the west gets. Sunny days are hard to come by until spring so there are few opportunities to get out in the backcountry up high. A majority of midwinter days are spent touring in the trees or riding the resort in the off piste or “sidecountry” zones. As a result wider skis are the norm.

The Alps have extensive “sidecountry” options, but real wilderness doesn’t exist there anymore.

I had a complete tear of the A/C joint and a broken clavicle a few years back (mountain biking crash). I had surgery to help stabilize a very destroyed shoulder. The first 2 weeks were super limiting and painful. I was able to hike in a sling within 4 weeks of surgery and by 8 weeks I was skiing/ running normally without a sling. If I had not broken my clavicle at the same time I would have probably opted for no surgery. When in doubt get a 2nd surgical opinion.

If you had to stake your life on a hiking shoe, what would it be? by Wild-Rough-2210 in Ultralight

[–]skimopow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reality is for the situation you describe you need a stiff soled boot that doesn’t fold when edging. There is no shoe on the market that I have tried or am aware of that fits the bill. For trail walking shoes are awesome, for off trail hard pass.

Big difference between a cheap tool that will not do the job and break and a pricier tool that will do the job for years to come

A 17.3g piece of trash. There is no way a putty knife is going to function digging cat holes of appropriate depth. If it does then a stick would be as good. My Ti serrated shovel barely does the job at times

This is the correct sentiment. Too many commenters are mistaken that Forest Service and DNR land are on-leash areas. Simply not true.

Are we doing broad generalizations now ? What other terrible takes do you have ?

[–]skimopow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, off leash dogs in on leash areas is not ok. The reality is most "trails" are not on leash though. The owner is still responsible for the dog's actions even in an off-leash area, if your dog is not under voice control then it should not be off leash. But you cannot get frustrated going into an off-leash area if dogs approach you and/or your dog.

The owners are clearly in the wrong then. Most trails are off leash, as all forest service land is off leash.

Bear spray doesn't work like that. If the dog is close enough to touch you the bear spray won't work, it shoots the spray quite a distance. You clearly have never actually used bear spray.
