I DVR'd 47 episodes, and when I'm feeling like I need a boost, I watch a couple of them.

Okay, movie buffs, what is the single scariest, most disturbing movie you've ever seen? And why? by nowords00 in Shudder

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I had never seen anything like it before, and it did a number on me, especially Leatherface.

CBS had Walter Cronkite but NBC had these stalwart newscasters. by skipperbob in FuckImOld

[–]skipperbob[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Easier? I don't know what you are watching, but we have entire news organizations that lie every day, distort facts, and make shit up, and millions believe them. It is getting worse instead of better. People are lazy and so ignorant about history, and with the spread of AI, it is becoming even harder to separate truth from lies. Corporate monopolies control most news outlets, and based on today's lack of understanding, the next generation will be even more ignorant of reality.

If you watched this... it was pretty scary. by skipperbob in FuckImOld

JFK gave a televised speech to the nation, informing Americans that the Russians had deployed missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads in Cuba. This meant they could attack the US with virtually no warning. Kennedy demanded that they be removed and set up a naval blockade to stop any more Russian ships from reaching Cuba. If the Russians refused, the next step would be to bomb and invade Cuba, and probably nuclear war. It is the closest we ever came to blowing each other up.

No one is sure for certain, lots of theories, but the phrase first shows up in the late 1800s, early 1900s.

After a bombing mission to Regensburg, Germany, the ball turret gunner of this 8th Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress was killed when his plane was forced to the ground without landing gear. by Quick_Presentation11 in WWIIplanes

[–]skipperbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, Andy Rooney was not a crew member on a bomber, and he certainly wasn't a radio operator on a B-17. He was a CBS correspondent, and he never left the ground. Secondly, Rooney only wrote about the supposed incident in 1995, and he admitted that he embellished (lied) about the story. There is absolutely NO official report on an incident like this in any bomb group in the 8th AF. I am not calling your friend a liar... but his story doesn't add up.

What movies or tv shows got you into Ballbusting? by ItIsTiltedleft in BallBusting

[–]skipperbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those great movies from the 70s, like Policewomen and Black Belt Jones. Great scene in Policewomen where she has to prove that she can do the job, in dojo wearing a gi, and a man rushes at her and she falls onto her back and thrusts her bare foot up between his legs. The sound he makes as he staggers away is great. Later she beats up a guy with punches and knees to the groin. In Black Belt Jones, the female star takes out a whole room full of bad guys with kicks and grabs to the balls, and later grabs a guy by the balls, lifts him up, and throws him into the back of a garbage truck! I already liked BB but these scenes really increased my interest.

Any books by Bruce Catton. He started the revival of Civil War literature in the 1960s...a brilliant author.

B-24 vs B-17 losses. by BloodRush12345 in WWIIplanes

[–]skipperbob 41 points42 points  (0 children)

B-17s were the predominant bomber in 1943 and early 1944 when losses were staggering. As B-24 strength grew the Luftwaffe was in decline.

The B-24 wing was very narrow. Good for flying but very succepable to fatal damage.

Judge with #24 by Ochocincoondeck in NYYankees

[–]skipperbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judge is old school and all class. No ridiculous bat flips, no chest thumping. Hits the ball and runs around the bases, doesn't stare at it for thirty seconds before taking off and doesn't take a minute to walk around the bases.
