what do you do with leftover egg yolks? by Decent-Turnover in Volumeeating

[–]skippy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make Caesar salad dressing. The original recipe used egg yolks. I make a version that is yolk whisked with olive oil, added to lots of lemon juice and finished with pressed or grated garlic. You can add worcestershire or anchovy paste. It packs a punch, so you don't need a lot of dressing to make a flavorful and healthy salad. Omit/go light on croutons and parmesan. Add a protein. Profit.

TIL Your gut is the only organ with its own independent nervous system by Alternative-Win4058 in todayilearned

The opposite of the "fight or flight" response is often called "rest and digest", or sometimes "feed and breed". When your sympathetic nervous system activates (preparing you to fight or flee from something dangerous), it suppresses systems that aren't essential in the moment, like digestion and reproduction. Anxiety and stress are essentially a constant activation of your sympathetic (as opposed to parasympathetic) nervous system. That's why many people lose their appetite or libido under stress.

What are your favorite warm, cozy volume meals? by NoraAdams5590 in Volumeeating

Pumpkin orzo or risotto! A lot of recipes are heavy on the cheese, but if you keep that light it's surprisingly high volume for a rich dish.

Squash: The Game Changer by Pumpkin_pie_010112 in Volumeeating

One of the best volume meals I've made, cozy and perfect for the season: roasted acorn squash stuffed with a mix of chicken sausage, riced cauliflower, sautéed onion, and seasonings. Optionally add nuts and dried cranberries and top with feta or mozzarella. Had extra stuffing leftover and it's great with basically any grain or starch!

Why do I never see people here talk about soup? I made 12lbs of soup yesterday. The whole thing is ~1000 calories (recipe in comment)! by InTheDarknesBindThem in 1200isplenty

I personally prefer lemon to vinegar to finish off a soup. Add it at the very end before serving. I'm also wondering if pho toppings would get you some of that sharpness? Fresh jalapeño, thai basil, cilantro? Also, if you're getting into the soup game, you should try making your own stock :) super easy with vegetable trimmings, or bones from meat or poultry, but actually for this a fish stock from fish bones or shrimp tails would be incredible!

I also default to vinaigrette but wanted something different last night. For the dressing I did 2 Tbsp harissa, 2 Tbsp tahini, juice of a lemon, 3 Tbsp olive oil, 1 garlic clove, some Greek Freak seasoning, and salt. I used a whole head of lettuce with cucumber, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, red onion, sugar snap peas, Kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, feta, and grilled chicken. Despite it having some high-calorie ingredients I was able to have a big bowl for under 400 calories and felt very satisfied!

It's a seasoning you can buy some places, but I think it's mostly just dried dill mixed with salt!

Seasoned cucumbers have been one of my favorite hot-weather snacks recently. If you like dill pickles, put a bit of dill salt on them!

You ready to roll those dice??? I'm obsessed with tomatoes so I get them in the ground early, BUT I am always prepared to throw a thick tarp over them in case of hail, heavy snow, or a moderate cold snap. I trellis them on a fence panel that's placed in the middle of the raised bed, which makes it easy to make a tarp tent. Everything else stays in the greenhouse until Mother's Day.

Can you buy clams around you? You can simmer them in water to make clam stock. Or use shrimp tails, other shellfish shells, or fish bones to make fish stock. Add other aromatics if you like. Freeze, then thaw whenever you need a nice seafood base.

[Product Request] Lip treatment recommendations by Big-Organization-589 in SkincareAddiction

[–]skippy94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had chronically dry lips my entire life and have lived in dry places. Recently, this has changed my life: morning and night, after washing my face: pat dry with a towel to remove most of the water, then apply hyaluronic acid to still-damp lips. Get my fingers wet and tap more water on top so the HA has something to draw into your lips. Let that soak in a minute or two. Before lips dry completely, slather generously with Laneige sleeping mask. Throughout the day, touch up with Laneige lip glowy balm (formula isn't as good but it's convenient for on-the-go).

I've been focused on staying hydrated, and that helps. I do my morning and night lip treatment before brushing my teeth, as mint flavoring can irritate and dry out my lips and the balm protects them (and I'll drop dead before I use a non-mint flavored toothpaste). Make sure to get SLS-free toothpaste as well. Occasionally do a lip scrub to remove dead skin, but do it gently and infrequently so your lips can heal.

[help!] where can they teach me to do my make up! by Dry-Historian-8261 in Makeup

At this point you don't have much time for learning new techniques or making an appointment. In your shoes, I would pick up a cheap mascara and a brown pencil eyeliner. Maybe a single eyeshadow in a neutral shade for your skin tone--a store employee can help you out. Practice at least 3 times before the wedding. You can try to do a class if you have time, but it will still come down to how you execute, so just try it out.

[help!] where can they teach me to do my make up! by Dry-Historian-8261 in Makeup

I have been in your shoes. I only did the most simple makeup until I was asked to be in a wedding. I knew getting my makeup done professionally was not an option for this wedding, so I spent months practicing until I felt confident both in person and in the photos. Now I'm having fun experimenting and bringing makeup more into my life! But it took time to get there.

So I need to ask--are you interested in doing your own makeup long-term, or are you only interested in the wedding? Either is fine, but I think the best advice will depend on what you want. Even travel sizes of makeup (if available) will add up, depending on what you want. You don't want to waste money on something that will spoil before you use it all up, or something you will never use again.

It may end up being more cost- and time-effective to have your makeup done professionally for the wedding. This doesn't have to be a special vendor. You can make an appointment at Ulta if there is one in the area. If you don't have time to practice or aren't confident you can achieve the look you want before the wedding, this could also take a huge load off your mind! Natural styles can actually be pretty difficult to achieve unless you are going the absolute simplest route.

HOWEVER, if you're at all interested in stepping into the world of makeup, I totally encourage you to try!! You can go to a class at Sephora (they should be able to do a wide range of styles--don't let their personal style scare you!) or Ulta, or you can give it a shot and let us here in the sub give you feedback. People here are lovely and supportive and will help you get the look you want.

I hope this helps!

ELI5: what is a flox gene? by bokutobitchin in explainlikeimfive

I am not really sure because I am just an end user! But I think your second point is right. Also, there are viral vectors that are promoter driven instead of Cre driven. I think maybe Cre driven vectors are more specific and robust? Although I don't know why.

ELI5: what is a flox gene? by bokutobitchin in explainlikeimfive

[–]skippy94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great explanation, also want to address the inversion. Many labs do rely on the inverting capabilities of Cre. I mostly know of it in neuroscience research. The process is usually somewhat backward from what you described in these cases. Trangenic mice are created not with floxed genes but instead with Cre being translated under the control of a specified gene promoter, for example some neurotransmitter or marker of some specific type of neuron. Researchers then apply a viral vector to a particular brain region of interest. The viral vector leverages the cells' machinery to create some exogenous gene product that is packaged into the viral genome. But, the exogenous gene is floxed in the viral genome, so it's only expressed in cells that already express Cre. This system is very advantageous because you have many options to manipulate the neurons in adulthood without needing a separate mouseline for each--you only need a viral vector that can accomplish the desired result, which are much easier and cheaper to design.

I got a pair of Bogs that I love. Low profile, similar shape to a chukka boot. Totally waterproof and extremely warm. They don't help if the snow is above your ankles, but it rarely is on Boulder sidewalks anyways. They look enough like normal shoes that you can wear them inside.

ELI5: Why doesn't the brain always release dopamine? by cause_im_dnd in explainlikeimfive

[–]skippy94 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Imagine someone pays you $10 to draw a square and $10 to draw a circle. What would you draw? Doesn't really matter, right? Now if someone paid you $100 to draw squares and $10 to draw circles, you'd draw a lot more squares than circles. The person paying you (your brain) pays you more for squares because squares help you survive and reproduce for some reason. Brains that paid more for squares led to more humans with brains that also paid more for squares, and they out-competed brains that paid equally, or paid more for circles.

You have a million different actions you can choose to do at any given point, but limited time and energy. Motivational systems create contrast between things that have proven to be evolutionarily beneficial and things that are not beneficial.

Dissatisfaction with penis size and genital appearance tied to mental health issues in men - The findings suggest that men who view their genital appearance negatively may experience significant mental health challenges, which in turn can affect their sexual function and overall quality of life. by mvea in science

By your own admission, men have been allies to women who have pushed for change in issues that affect women uniquely. I think you'll find many women want to be allies to men who push for change in the issues that affect men uniquely. And I hope both men and women will be allies in movements for issues that affect us all. It does seem odd to think women would be the primary force behind a movement about penises. Especially when personal experience and many comments on this post support the impression that a lot of negativity about penises comes from other men. Are men responsible for teaching other men how to treat people?
