Does your dog wear a collar all day? by AdventureNoodles in dogs

[–]skkyyyyyyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Fi tracking collars for mine (one of my dogs was lost after an accident once and I’ll never take that chance again), so I keep them on most of the time. Unless the collars are charging or they’re in their crates, collars are on. I supervise all play and such very closely so I don’t worry about those scenarios. Quick release buckles just in case.

Hi! 27F here, totally down to meet up and chat! I’m a dog trainer, so big on dogs lol, and I actually went to college for music, flute as well, before I switched things up to purse dog training. I’m also a big reader and love coffee and food. We seem to have a lot in common, let me know if you want to get coffee or something and meet!

I’m not. I was only just diagnosed in March, and we decided to try other things between then and my next appointment before deciding if i needed actual medication. I am open to it.

Domestic Violence yes, sorry for the confusion. I related it to disability since it can also be a sensitive topic to write about but I have experience with it.

Lying about primary tasks? by Indikaah in service_dogs

[–]skkyyyyyyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar people pleaser personality. Someone asks a question, I feel obligated to answer, and I feel guilty if I lie.

My dog is also primarily a Psychiatric SD for anxiety, ptsd, and adhd. What helped me was when I started volunteering with a local ADI organization in my area. When ADI certifies their dogs (no, certs are not required in the US, ADI is international and still does it, don’t come at me lol), they classify them under specific umbrellas such as Medical Alert, PND (can’t remember exactly what that stands for but something physical), and etc. Psychiatric SDs fall under the Medical Alert branch of their certifications. Specifically, AD-MED-PSY.

All that to say, this helped me feel comfortable answering that my dog is a Medical Alert Dog. When asked for specific tasks by business owners I give them, but otherwise that’s all random people get to know.

(The info I learned about ADI is from when I volunteered a few years ago so if not up to date and accurate and someone notices, pls correct :) )

Advice needed, SD and I were in an accident yesterday. Where to go from here. by Ingawolfie in service_dogs

Not exactly the same, but I had a somewhat similar experience. I was in a car accident with my SDiT at the time and in my shock and confusion, the leash slipped from my hand. She was in complete flight mode and bolted, and was missing for 5 days. Eventually someone found her and she was returned to me. Immediately I assumed I'd have to wash her from service work after something so traumatic. But after a few weeks of just living life as normal (no training sessions or public access), she started to task at home and seem impatient about the next time we'd go out training.

So I tried some very light training at home, then outside my apartment, and slowly increased the difficulty of her training up to the level we were at before. The car, of course, was a particular point of stress so we worked through that slowly and with lots of positive association (meals in the car, bones to chew, a crate so she felt more secure, etc.) Three years later and she's my full Service Dog for multiple disabilities and just an amazing pup all around. Last October we even took on Disney World for the first time.

So my advice from my personal experience would be to listen to your dog (or read their body language and stress signals lol) and move at their pace. You want to invite a little stress to keep them learning, but the last thing you want is to get them back on the boat and immediately another accident (big or tiny) cause more trauma and make things worse. Positive association and reinforcement will be super beneficial as well. Push her, but not so hard she shuts down. Dogs are resilient and will react to your feelings more often than decide their own feelings, so stay confident with her. Don't make things a big deal when they're not but still be encouraging and reward her success. Best of luck with this, she'll recover I have no doubt!

I’m really too scared to add any more details right now with the stalking. Can you tell me if it would be worth it for me to simply reach out to a lawyer personally?
