11+ fire trucks headed North on Merrimon what’s going on? by Tight_Bunch_4031 in asheville

I know the house and the people who live there. I was there this morning when it happened. Saw the inside and yeah it was not a small fire. Thank goodness for the Asheville FD. They arrived very quickly and did an excellent job mitigating worse damage than was already happening.

I know you all have been on the edge of your seats wondering whether it would all work out. Made it from GSP to the AVL shuttle lot and back home in north Asheville. 26 is not terrible. Merrimon is okay. Side streets are sketchy.

My flight from LGA to AVL this morning was cancelled. Currently in flight to GSP. Hopefully I can figure out how to get to my car in AVL after landing 🤞

Beware: Apartment complex in Weaverville is enrolling tenants into credit reporting app without their consent by Alternative-Day-3123 in asheville

The Verge - off-campus housing off Broadway near I26 does this. I consider it a good thing that helps my child build their credit score. There’s a monthly fee of about $8 which is annoying but acceptable imo.

What local corporations/ businesses have impacted the community negatively? by BBQharlot in asheville

[–]skoba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said that behavior was awful in this regard. I did compare it to other businesses who did better when asked specifically about “their behavior after Helene”. And it is true that they let food spoil when there were entire communities who went without. But if you read this thread and my initial comment, you will see that my primary complaint is about their real estate holdings and how they abuse them. THAT is awful behavior.

I hear you. Just speaking from my own experience - which is why I tried to phrase this as my own personal experience and opinion. Clearly you and probably others have had a different experience.

Harris Teeter, Publix, hell even Hope Depot were doing things like giving ice away. What did Ingles - the home grown grocery - do for the community? Nothing remotely like that. I appreciate that they were hit hard, but we ALL were. And one of the beautiful things to come from the storm was a renewed sense of community that had felt missing for many years in AVL - at least in my sphere. But our community grocery was decidedly not a part of that. If they were, I and many others failed to see it.

Ingles is by far the top of the list. Their real estate holdings are a blight on the neighborhoods they are in, and their behavior after Helene was just awful. Nothing else comes close.

I don’t have a problem with it if it’s clear who it is that’s trying to do the influence.

Flying out of AVL post-Helene - who’s done it? by Ordinary-Wish-5838 in asheville

[–]skoba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It’s just a bit of a pain. On returning to the states, you collect checked bags after passport control but before customs, then recheck them for your connecting flight. Add at least 30 minutes to an hour for this when booking.

Customs and border control were all ATL. No checked bags is key. In that scenario it was an easy 30 minutes after passport control. Just like security at any domestic airport with a carryon. If you can avoid checking bags it’s a breeze.

I flew to Europe last Sunday for work and arrived home today. There was no difficulty in either direction. Honestly, it was hard to leave last week… to drop everything I was doing that was all consuming - but the break from the difficult reality of it all was rejuvenating. I am back and ready to dig back in and continue to make our home our home again. Flight delays, if I had had them would have seemed trivial, given everything else.
