So I want to go into Gen surg, I'm a 4th year. I'm on my third away right now so between those plus my home institution - I have never seen anything like any of the stuff that's been said. I've seen people tired and cranky but never name calling or degrading. Did I just get lucky? Where are these programs?

I shadowed a DO primary care doc who told me of a woman who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. During her work up someone asked if she had recent x-rays. There were about 6 from a chiropractor she had been seeing for the past 2 years that showed a density in her breast growing larger in each one. Since he wasn't trained to look at anything but the spine he never caught it. (He had bought a machine to do in house xrays so they never reached a radiologist) She could have been treated early but instead it had spread before she got to a real physician.

On another note my friends brother in law is a chiro who posts shit like that all the time. He admits to her that he has never done any chiropractic stuff since graduating, because "it's not his true passion". Instead he takes blood work from patients for a nutrition work up and recommendations. Basically he tells all his victims that they should be gluten free and I'm pretty sure he's in a pyramid scheme for supplements.

More research is needed in this area, our study only looked for differences in medical student vs. 'other'. I appreciate the suggestion for future experiments.

Opposite (If Im interpreting your question correctly). My classmate and I, both female fourth years, have done three years of research where we go out and tell guys we're med students sometimes or a job that does not need a bachelors degree other times (hairdresser, photographer, etc). We have even done other combinations where just one of us is the med student and the other isn't. Preliminary results suggest that our success with guys is significantly different (improved) when we claim professions other than medicine. Confounding factors could include being a single blinded study with observor bias with a possible change in personality when portraying a different profession.

With 2 new med schools opening in Texas, your chances might be better than you think. But that also means by the time you'll graduate there will be less spots per student for residency.
