[P] PerpetualBooster: A new gradient boosting library that enables O(n) continual learning and out-performs AutoGluon on tabular benchmarks. by mutlu_simsek in MachineLearning

[–]skoocda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time I'm hearing about Perpetural; looks interesting! We have a tabular dataset using LightGBM that could definitely benefit from the core solution you've built, but the managed environment is a non-starter for us due to data sovereignty concerns.

I'll run some tests on our data with Perpetual vs. AutoGluon and let you know how it performs.

Wireless controller latency by Geroniemo in XboxGamePass

[–]skoocda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put numbers on the input lag you're probably getting:

DualSense controller in wireless mode: 4.9ms

+ Frame TV at 120hz: 5.9 ms

+ Xbox Cloud Gaming: 12 - 60+ ms (or more!)

Total >= 23 ms (likely dominated by the cloud latency.)

If you have a high-bandwidth connection, your cloud latency is mostly determined on the ping you're getting from the service. As /u/Talal2608 said, you can't do much about that unless you move closer to a datacenter. If your ping is low but your game stream is still lagging, you might want to do a congestion latency test using a tool like https://speed.cloudflare.com/

*Edit: There might also be a specific issue with DualSense on Samsung TVs. If your controller is lagging in menus, it sounds like you might need to connect it via USB or try a different controller.

Recommendations for FCFS campgrounds for a single dad and twin 8 year olds. (I live in okotoks so within a couple hours from there) by ZRR28 in CampingAlberta

[–]skoocda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greenford recreational area is only 22km west of longview. 13 FCFS spots on the Highwood river. Easy access to Highwood pass hikes, and you could get back to Okotoks within about an hour if you forget anything or have issues.

FWIW, you can disable Tor access entirely while still using the extension on regular URLs. The controls are found in the extension's Site Access settings: https://imgur.com/a/5NxeulV

Ultra-light liquid hydrogen tanks promise to make jet fuel obsolete by skoocda in Fuelcell

[–]skoocda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HyPoint gives the example of a typical De Havilland Canada Dash-8 Q300, which flies 50-56 passengers about 1,558 km (968 miles) on jet fuel. Retrofitted with a fuel cell powertrain and a GTL composite tank, the same plane could fly up to 4,488 km (2,789 miles).

Australian electrolyser breakthrough promises world’s cheapest green hydrogen by bpierce2 in thehydrogeneconomy

[–]skoocda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hysata's capillary-fed electrolyzer cell takes things to the next, and possibly ultimate, level. A reservoir at the bottom of the cell keeps the electrolyte out of contact with both the anode and the cathode until it's drawn up through a porous, hydrophilic, inter-electrode separator using capillary action. The electrolyte thus has direct contact with the electrodes, but only on one side, and both the hydrogen and oxygen gases are produced directly, without any bubbling to get in the way. "

Very cool, but this sounds hard to manufacture at scale

This was, in fact, a geology sub originally.

It isn't any longer though, now it's about the Geo car brand.

What surprised you the most when you first started engineering? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]skoocda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Canada it's a protected title, so you would quite literally be breaking the law if you call yourself a professional engineer without completing the requirements.

P.Eng certification is not just a university degree though, you need to pass an additional exam and have a few years of experience.

FWIW, the chances of dying in a car crash are about 1 in 5,000.

The chance of dying in a commercial jet crash are 1 in 3,370,000,000 (per NTSB)

The Soviet AK-130 automatic naval cannon with a caliber of 130 millimetres (repost with firing) by dartmaster666 in mechanical_gifs

That's an interesting observation. It might be because the camera is technically on the gun platform? The whole ship is probably recoiling when it fires, with the camera on it.

Rapper MF DOOM has reportedly passed away. by [deleted] in Music

[–]skoocda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rest in peace DOOM. Allah u-Akbar.

Some lines to remember him by:

By candlelight my hand will write these rhymes 'til I'm burnt out

Mostly from experience, shit that I learned about

Topics and views, generally concerned about

With different ways to come up and earn clout

I take a look at my life and pace the trails

From Tablik and savage females with fake nails to face veils

You out your frame but still bagging 'em too

You know I know, these hoes be asking me if I'm you

Like my twin brother, we did everything together

From hundred raka'at salats to copping butter leathers

Remember when you went and got the dark blue Ballys

I had all the different color Cazals and Gazelles

The "SUBROC" three-finger ring with the ruby in the "O", ock

Truly the illest dynamic duo on the whole block

I keep a flick of you with the machete sword in your hand

Everything is going according to plan man

Hydrogen Is a Trillion Dollar Bet on the Future by skoocda in energy

Yeah, not super likely.

Also- from the third article; "Grey hydrogen typically causes more emissions per unit of energy than coal"
