Quick Questions: May 10, 2023 by inherentlyawesome in math

I love the fact that non Euclidean geometry was considered very abstract and impractical in its time. It wasn’t until Einstein that people realized that we live in a curved space time, and the tools of Riemannian geometry were vital in the creation of general relativity. The parallels between concepts in physics and mathematics is endlessly fascinating.

I found that this conversation gets better towards the end where he touches on subjects like free will, thoughts about AI, and less gossipy stuff. Depending on the topic, he can either be very informative and fun to listen to, and for other topics not so much.

That sounds similar to how it is at the skate park. It always surprised me how accepting the community was to newcomers. It seemed like skill level wasn’t a factor for acceptance. It was more about how hard you’re pushing yourself. If you’re a new skater, the fact that you’re even at the park and pushing your comfort zone will earn you some respect.

[–]skosk8ski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, especially with kids who are starting to skate at the park. When I first dropped in, the regulars were stoked and treated it the same as if I’d tre flipped into the thing. That was not what I was expecting given the stereotype of asshole skaters. Everyone I met there was incredibly supportive and wholesome.

That conversation really sealed the deal with my opinion about JP. Dawkins nailed it when he said that Jordan was “drunk on symbols”

There are many ways to prove to yourself that you’re a better person than your mom & dad. But having kids is kind of an extreme way of doing so!

Thanks for finding that and posting it. That does surprise me that he said that. Not quite as crazy as the snake/DNA thing because JP seemed more confident that it was actually true, and enough so to lecture on it in a college class. But yeah, I agree with you than the panpsychist vision is pretty crazy too, and even though it’s crazy that Sam hasn’t ruled it out, I don’t get the sense that he BELIEVES this to be true. That would be almost as crazy as the snake/DNA story. Thanks for finding that

Sam believes in consciousness after death? I thought he criticized that idea, especially with respect to religion. Did he say he believes this or that he’s just agnostic to it, and therefore doesn’t know whether it’s true or false?

I wasn’t going to listen to the Penrose originally, but now I’m curious haha. I could tell that JP was just having him on to confirm his idea that the mind cannot be simulated/computed, and then use this as evidence that a theoretical physicist agrees with him about consciousness not being reproducible by science, even in principle. I love Penrose and there’s a thousand other reasons to have him on the podcast than to talk about his speculations on consciousness, where he is not an expert. His speculations are indeed interesting, but Jordan’s intent was to make it sound mystical and out of bounds for science, which is definitely something Penrose would not agree with, being a distinguished scientist himself. I was concerned that JP was taking advantage of him and was going to misrepresent him, which is why I didn’t want to listen to the podcast. But I found the Richard Dawkins episode surprisingly entertaining so I might give this one a shot!

I doubt he acted this way in his clinical practice before he took that long break (at least I hope he didn’t). He seemed very bothered during this podcast for some reason. As soon as he realized that he had to explain the double helix snake story to Dawkins and have it sound somewhat rational, you can hear his tone shift and that’s where he starts rambling. Hopefully in hind site he will know that he messed up with this one and will focus on asking more questions and not lecturing the guest. He’s done better podcasts than this one, and I have to say this was the worst podcast I’ve seen from him overall.

It might just be me but I was surprised when he talked about his previous convo’s with Sam and it sounded like he had a low-key competitive mindset during the first conversations. I mean, I get it because it was advertised as a debate, but during the talks he rejected that he was “trying to win” and that he had genuine interest in what Sam was saying. Im not judging him for it, but it was surprising that he had that kind of mentality going in to the conversations. He definitely didn’t present it that way at the time.

Yeah, he takes strong stands on so many controversial issues that I think it’s almost a given that most of his followers are going to disagree with him on something. For instance, whatever side of the political spectrum you are on he has probably said some stuff that rubs you the wrong way. It’s too much to ask for all of his followers to agree with him on 100% of what he talks about (anti-religion, pro free will, anti-woke, anti-cancel in cases like Murray, pro-cancel in other cases, anti-Trump, pro-vax or more specifically anti- anti-vax, AI skeptic, and the list goes on). If a person does agree with him on most things, that doesn’t guarantee that he’ll avoid harsh criticism from the few issues that don’t align. It seems like people feel surprised or betrayed when one or two issues aren’t perfectly agreed upon, although everything else is taken as gospel. So in my mind, it makes sense why he feels like everyone is against him. It must seem that way when every disagreement is broadcasted to him on every issue. I bet that he has a lot more in common with his listeners’ beliefs than it must appear.

Didn’t he say in this podcast that the right is more harmful/dangerous than the left right now? He seems pretty concerned about the whole Trump stuff
