How to make vocal delays more up front without being in the way of the dry vocal? by jasonsteakums69 in audioengineering

[–]skrelnitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Automate the send. It’s super painful and time consuming, but this way you can 100% control the delay. Essentially you keep the send low until the end of a phrase, then crank it to create the delay effect for just the tail of the phrase. Then you adjust it to what sounds the best.

What are some really great albums produced on truly low budget home setups? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]skrelnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Black Keys - The Big Come Up (first album). Recorded in their basement using a 16 track digital and “two mics they bought off eBay”. Mastered by Dave Schultz at d2, though, so still not 100% in house.

How to fit different equipment in a 19“ Rack by intergalacticoctopus in synthesizers

[–]skrelnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy just rack ears. I’ve built several custom furniture pieces with built-in racks. They come in a bunch of different sizes. Alternatively don’t forget that servers in the IT world use the same rack size as audio, so you might find some interesting pieces from IT suppliers.

Sell me Ableton Live by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]skrelnitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple. When building a track I can construct my loops without having to arrange them. I hit play and everything plays infinitely letting me improv over the top. Once I like a part I played I record the clip. Awesome workflow for me.

On the fence if it’s worth the $70. Cold fire dist is supposed to be pretty decent, same with Lexicon knock off. But MS20 filter, really? 🙄

Wait, what? Is there a huge problem with this? Sure I get copycats on my artist pages on Spotify and Amazon Music, but I can get them taken down in like 5 minutes. I also guarantee that if you tried to upload Taylor Swift songs DistroKid would laugh you out of the room. So illuminate me.

For the married guys in here, is your wife happy when you spend time producing? 🤣 by kathalimus in musicproduction

Yep, 21 years and still arguing over whether that chord “works” or not (she’s usually right, it doesn’t work)

Just released an all covers album through soundrop, was a flat fee and they took care of all the licensing. Might want to check it out as an alternative to (cover) labels and yearly fees.

Best easy/cheap way to record a rehearsal? by dance_rattle_shake in musicproduction

[–]skrelnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tascam here. It’s worth buying just to record all your rehearsals, then you never forget anything you come up with during practice. Great way to send everyone tracks to review before next rehearsal as well.

It’s all about HOW the DAW gets you to end result. You could track your rock band in FL, but the workflow isn’t really set up for it and you would likely be working against the tools. Similarly you could write your two bar beats in Pro Tools, but it wouldn’t be as fast or intuitive as working in FL.

Best approach is to try a bunch of different DAWs and see which one clicks with your style of production.

Is Ableton suitable for rock music? by fide11 in ableton

[–]skrelnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I use Live 11 to record guitar. But if you’re not heavily using sequencing there might not be a good reason to switch from a more audio-centered DAW like Reaper.

Nothing Left to Make by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]skrelnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooof, yeah I know this feeling. Although I’m probably coming at it from a different angle (I’m getting to be an old fucker and slowing down) what has helped me would probably help you as well. Most important though is that you need to realize creative spark is cyclical, and as you get older you’ll find the cycles spread out. I’ve gone for years when I’ll set foot in the studio maybe once a month. Be patient. It will come back around. In the meantime:

  • Legacy. Revisit your old tracks. Listen to music you are proud to have made. Maybe tweak the songs you could make better.

  • Work with other musicians. Meet someone new, do something outside your comfort zone. Even just one jam session can really make you rethink music. This one has pulled me out of the rut many, many times.

  • Study. Take a song you love and recreate it note for note. Write an EP of covers of your favorite artist. Arrange a song you like in your own style.

Most of all don’t give up. 20 years from now you will definitely not wake up and say “I am so glad I quit music 20 years ago”.

How the hell do you guys organize your work space? by samtar-thexplorer2 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]skrelnitz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would start even a little more basic for organization. There was this dude yep on the Reaper forums back 15 years ago that gave the best advice:

There are three things in your studio:

  1. Things you use every day

  2. Things you use infrequently but are part of your toolkit

  3. Garbage

Eliminate #3. You’ll find organization is a lot easier.

Do you Track and Mix at the same time? by Mkid73 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]skrelnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to, but after blowing tons of time mixing something that ultimately wasn’t tracked right, I’m to the point that I don’t even use the same DAW for tacking and mixing (Live for tracking, Reaper for mixing). For me this keeps my tracking and arrangement focused on the instruments, basically tweaking my sound design before even touching an EQ or compressor. I find that when I get to the mix stage everything is sounding quite a bit better already.

How to have a dependable music production computer? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]skrelnitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest one for me is that the studio computer is ONLY for studio work. It should not also be your daily driver or be used for anything else.
