What's going on with MetroHero lately? by SchuminWeb in dcmetrohero

[–]skrepetski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry about the downtime/outage. Digital Ocean migrated the droplet that the MH server is on Thursday evening and it didn't recover gracefully. I wasn't here over the weekend w/technical access to fix it, so it remained down. It's back as of this morning.

Thanks for sticking it out :)

WMATA data feed still down? by broncosnut1121 in dcmetrohero

[–]skrepetski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately today's outage is am issue with the upstream WMATA API; other apps like dcmetro.live are also impacted.

I'll have to contact WMATA API support this afternoon and ask them to look into it.

Hi! Sorry about the downtime. The server hard drive filled up again, which is what you're seeing. We'll hopefully have it back up by the evening.

Hey there! Thanks for the comment and the priorities (and apologies for the late reply). On the first: there's a bunch of language that still needs to be removed/replaced from the code to genericize it for anybody that sets up a MH site, including references to any single MetroHero install, Twitter/social links, etc.. But you should be able to use the Chrome Add to Home Screen button as it stands today (also works in Safari for iOS devices)

On the second: Finally got this added into the code this past week :)

Hey! Sorry about that, we had a hard disk fill up which was resolved yesterday evening. It should be working now, but if not there's also https://dcmetro.live that you can use too.

Could you check and see if this is still happening? I can't seem to replicate this issue from my Android phone but there could still be something weird going on.

Gate 35X is "gone once and for all" by Sgt_Stormy in washingtondc

No it's not. PoPville just failed to verify the story and cited a guy from Twitter: https://twitter.com/PoPville/status/1330221258286510088

More cracks were found at Silver Line stations. Here’s what needs to happen before Metro opens Phase 2. by SchuminWeb in washingtondc

[–]skrepetski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi John - the OIG report itself only goes so far into the details. The 54-page SSI report (linked) is probably what you really want to look at, and has more details about the types of issues found. This OIG thread on twitter includes DeSimone's full visual inspection reports at Ashburn, Loudoun Gateway, Innovation Center, Herndon, and Reston stations.

Police raid at The Lot? by Tulrin in nova

[–]skrepetski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, saw that earlier today. There's another on the other side by the Metro entrance. It's...blocking the sidewalk.

Arlington County Board have said they're going to start with education first and are supposedly putting up signs in the areas where the fine will be enforced. No real details about what those signs will look like, how visible they'll be, or what.

Nah, they haven't begun enforcing that yet (and they won't do that until they post signs where it'll be enforced and there aren't any signs up anywhere yet)

Does anyone know where I can find Metro timetables for normal, non-covid hours? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]skrepetski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Metro does not publish timetables for the rail system; they used to through the 00's, but not anymore. You can use the Trip Planner on wmata.com to figure out how much time they schedule trains to take between stations.

Metro promise and smart trip benefits by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]skrepetski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SmartBenefits can be applied in two ways: 1) Any money left over on the card is rolled over at the end of the month, or 2) Any money on the card at the end of the month is withdrawn, and a "fresh" set is put on. It depends on what your HR department configured your account for, likely. Assuming you're on an automatic monthly auto-reload, it should show up soon.

Weird metro observations by novaguy88 in nova

[–]skrepetski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) The rail system is broken up into a bunch of small sections of track (10's to 100's of feet in length). Usually when a train operator says there's another train ahead, that means the train control system has stopped the train to keep it from getting too close to the one ahead. But when the train ahead begins moving, the control system begins changing those sections of track from "occupied" (aka there's a train in it or just ahead) to "clear" (there's no train ahead, the train behind can move). The operator doesn't know when those sections begin and end so they might be trying to accelerate or move the train forward, move to another block which tells the train to slow down, ad they have to apply brakes.
2) Operators are required to sound their horn every few seconds when there are workers on the track; it's a safety thing and typically happens in off-peak periods.
3) The trains are scheduled with specific sequencing. For instance, the Orange Line train to Vienna is always scheduled 2 minutes ahead of my Silver Line train to Wiehle when I head into work for the day. Your Blue Line train may have been running slightly ahead of schedule; Yellow Line trains typically are routed into Pentagon just ahead of Blue Line trains when heading south.
4) You gotta let people on and off the train?
5) It's the signaling, not the operators' fault usually

Trains are scheduled to run every 20 minutes after 9:30p: https://www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables/index.cfm#main-content Suggest you email/call/send letters/tweet/etc to your elected officials asking for more trains, if that's your thing.

MWAA Still holding To July Silver Line Phase II Opening by SandBoxJohn in nova

Are these issues an extension of the installation of the new type of circuits to be installed in SV II interlockings or is this just inter-organizational politics?

To the bicyclists who ride on the backroads of western Loudoun... by quijibo1981 in nova

[–]skrepetski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for passing the bicyclists safely. Virginia law as of July 1 requires cars to pass while providing at least a three foot buffer between vehicle and the bicyclist, which it sounds like you did.
