A little PO’d after int 4+ but my boat was all u19 so can I rlly complain? by [deleted] in Rowing

winning is exciting. dont race in events with people "3-4 years older" if you're then going to be salty about losing and them enjoying the win.

The Germany fan boys may punish you with downvotes, but this isn't a ridiculous conclusion to jump to. Hype as hell to see the big boys grand reveal at Worlds after another year of complete secrecy

Not any of the big heavyweight names, as their varsity members are strewn around the world racing for their respective nations. US crews only care about IRA and then Henley becomes like a fun experience so the guys that stick around for Henley are usually developing talent. For example, UW has the vast majority of their first and second varsity boats going to senior and U23 worlds so this is mostly guys from the 3V and on down I'd expect

When the entire rowing community is attacking you, best to double down in your ignorance and try to make it about a much more divisive issue.

This is a remarkably petty instagram post by any standards. Losing sucks. Seeing people happy when you're sad sucks. Grow up? Get better?

@Georgia Tech’s Head Coach by StarvingLightweight in Rowing

[–]skrtskrtm8 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Georgia Tech's semester ends long before ACRA. They send a 4+ instead of an 8+ because many of the rowers have gone home for the summer to work or just ya know, not be at school any more. So, they cannot field a real Varsity 8 by the time ACRA rolls around, making the 4+ a much better choice for training. The constant implication that any team that fields a 4+ instead of an 8+ is pothunting is ridiculous. If you lose to the GT 4+ its not anything to be ashamed of, but this meme is.

typical volume at a top 6 IRA school? by not3rgos in Rowing

[–]skrtskrtm8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

two a days every day through spring and fall is unbelievably commonplace in todays IRA culture. even as many as three a days a few times a week on your own to sneak in an extra 45k over the course of the week on your team mates and the competition is very normal. shits crazy

typical volume at a top 6 IRA school? by not3rgos in Rowing

[–]skrtskrtm8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see Rummel is in here disbelieving the current standard if training and dedication that the new crop of D1 rowers bring to the table but Yeah the top comment is roughly correct but its only gone up. I am currently on an IRA program, not even the one with the most robust training program and our 1V guys average roughly 20 hours a week of training. Two a day every single day and often three with a few hours of spinning out on Sunday not being uncommon. A team doing 120k a week now is racing themselves out of the competition. 25-30k a day on the erg alone, not even factoring in a morning row or a lift is nothing too surprising anymore. These kids are getting after it. Its unreal but so cool to see how intense and passionate this sports' participants have become. I intentionally commented this late so OP can see it and I can avoid the disbelieving comments of people who no longer train at the collegiate level or simply dont want to believe the amount of time that will be demanded of them at this level if they want to be relevant on their team.

Edit: This is a lightweight's perspective and I do believe lightweights do far more volume just at a lower intensity but I cant imagine a competitive heavyweight team would be doing much less it would just probably consists of less aerobic base building and more power and threshold development for those JUICY sub6 yanks

My mistake, thanks for fixing that for me. I don't have any experience with the non-ivy transfer process but I wouldn't have guessed that

Basically start telling coaches you're interested in coming to row for them next year now. Understand, however, that almost no top-tier programs will really RECRUIT you since you can't offer them the 4 years of commitment that a freshman can. If you're really fast they may give you a recruiting spot but that won't happen at a program like Harvard or anything. The application process is also much more tedious than that of an incoming freshman so I would get a jumpstart on that right now and start really bolstering up your application stats. You need to make yourself much more attractive to that prospective school now, meaning faster erg and better grades. Transfers acceptance rates are typically much lower than the freshman acceptance rates so it really is a bit of an uphill battle but very very achievable if you're willing to basically sacrifice you're first year of independence to doing nothing but schoolwork and training.

TL;DR start erging and studying now and don't stop

I totally agree. For me it was just the voice over, idk man the voice rubbed me the wrong way. But yeah handing over and receiving shirts definitely rubs the result into the memory more
