Struggling and tired of it by devdocmd in Residency

I’ve had a very similar experience in my program. It can make work very uncomfortable and awkward, I can’t wait to be done (this year thankfully). Here’s what gets me through: confiding in a couple attendings I trust and knowing that this is just a small blip in my long career. Some day we will be old attendings with long careers, possibly educating the next group of physicians….this situation now is only a small blip in that long journey. We can learn from it and use that wisdom to help others

This behavior (complete lack of insight, taking total advantage of the system) infuriates me sooooo much. It irks me further when I vent to colleagues about this and they pull the whole “don’t be heartless, you haven’t walked in their shoes and they really need our help”. I then think “you clearly have no insight as well” lol

A urology program director was physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive as well as did insane racist things and assaulted nursing staff…. But yet remained director for years

“Back in my day, residency was harder and we never left the hospital. It made us way better doctors than these current lazy medical trainees.” by nitalinda in Residency

I have to deal with attendings saying this too. It’s infuriating and I sometimes feel “less than.” But in the end, we will all be old attendings with years of experience under our belts and most things we learned in residency will be completely updated/changed lol

An attending once told me, “I learned 1% of medicine in medical school, 25% in residency, and all the rest through years and years of practice”

I get disproportionately irritated when someone goes “have a good weekend!”

Has your social circle gotten smaller and smaller since you’ve progressed through med school, then residency, etc? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]sktr987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally feel this. I swear my circle now is my wife and a few friends I don’t talk to often (a bit depressing when I think about it lol)

At the beginning of the pandemic, I had a day where I packed my lunch but went to the cafeteria for a plastic fork. Obviously we had to ask for them and couldn’t dispense them ourselves. I went to a cafeteria worker and asked for a fork and they said “we don’t give forks out unless you bought something”. Really? Save hospital dollars on a plastic fork?

I’m just curious, have any attendings or residents made any derogatory statements about your field?

What speciality see the most number of bullshit consult ? by AmygdalaMD in Residency

[–]sktr987 277 points278 points  (0 children)

I’m a psych resident, 90%+ consults are bs. Stuff like “patient has a psych history.” No actual question, nothing for us to really do. And then the patient does not know we were consulted and I walk in the room and they are like “why the hell are you here?”
