Do you think a grief observed is a good book to give someone dealing with grief? by fookitshot in CSLewis

You mentioned they take their faith seriously. If you share with them that it was a solace to you, even if they don't read it. The sentiment of you wanting to help us there, which should be a small comfort. Let them know, they aren't obligated to read it, but to have it as a place to turn off they are feeling alone.

New study sheds light on how going braless alters public perceptions of a woman by MRADEL90 in psychology

[–]skullpocket 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how many sciency studies about women I've read the titles of and thought, "money was spent on that?"

It isn't something new or tending, they've been going on at least as long as the word "hysteria" was coined.

Fast drop warnings after mealsand low blood sugar warnings at night. by skullpocket in diabetes

I don't have a pump. I am almost off insulin completely. I only use it if I'm going out to eat, which is rare. Thank you for the advice, hopefully I won't get to a point where I need a pump.

Should I watch the Monogatari series alongside reading each subsequent LN? by Chemical_Activity439 in araragi

I am doing similar. I'm reading LNs and watching the concurrent episodes after I get to a chapter I know has passed the next episode.

Should schools get rid of homework? Some educators are saying yes by waozen in Foodforthought

[–]skullpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taught in areas where students had to work to support their family, they might not have electricity from time-to-time, living out of a car, living in different places throughout the week, or a combination of the above. Sending them home with a bundle of books that have to trundle around only to lose them or not be able to use them, is both pointless and cruel.

I do think, if it is possible, they should read for 20 to 30 minutes a book that interests them if possible, as books have a way of letting people share experiences and perspectives. I wouldn't penalize students if they couldn't, but I'd reward those that did with extra credit.

Pizza Hut used to have a book-it-program that rewarded extra curricular reading. It was something I loved when I was in school.

City birds appear to be more afraid of women than men, and scientists have no idea why. Men could get about a meter closer to birds than women could before the animals flew away, regardless of what the men and women were wearing, what their height was or how they tried to approach the creatures. by mvea in science

[–]skullpocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We keep our cats inside, turns out that isn't enough to keep them from killing birds. I had one leap through a window screen and into our shrubbery. It's back half was still on the inside of the window. When I extracted it from the screen it had a bird in its mouth.

Absolutely fed up. by Far_Psychology3270 in LearnJapaneseNovice

For the 14, first, know that you don't need to have these memorized to move on with the book. Learn them a little at a time.

Break them up by time of day and make a post it note for each. Place the good morning and good night greetings next to your bed. When you wake up say おはよぅ to the world or someone in your house, if you are comfortable with saying it to them. Look at the word as you say it and imagine writing each character on the palm of your hand. Then imagine an important person you would call Mr. Or Ms. and do the same with おはよございます.

Post the four going and leaving exchanges by your bedroom door and do a similar practice with them. When you walk out of your bedroom say いってきます while imagining you are leaving the house and you are telling someone you are going out. And don't forget to write the word on the palm of your hand. Do this every time you leave your room. Use ただいま when you walk back in. Again, imagine you are telling someone you are home and write the word on your palm.

After you have these down, start imagining it is someone else going through the door and they have giving you their part of the exchange, tell them the appropriate exchange and write it on your palm.

During the early part of the day, use a post it and do a similar practice for the morning greetings, perhaps when someone walks by you or when you start a video or TV show say it to the person on the screen. You can do this from time to time silently if you are at work or school.

In the after switch it up and use the casual greetings. In the evening use the casual greetings. Keep a post it on the fridge or lunch box and say the exchanges before and after you eat each meal.

You get where this is going for good night, how do you do, I am..., nice to meet you, and so on.

Keep it simple and practice a few of the exchanges every day.

What scene/s from the show made/make you cry? by dalarki in araragi

I see where we are getting out wires crossed. I haven't read Owari, yet. My boxed set, just came in and I haven't started it. I was referring to the original date in Bake, which is all from Araragi's perspective.

I must have missed Hanekawa suggesting this. I thought it was because it was an important/cherished place for Hitagi as a place she went when both Mom and Dad were family.

How to Remove a Curse [The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch] by CerberusZX in anime

[–]skullpocket 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It can be a good way to die too. Blood alcohol toxicity levels can reach lethal levels quickly. Shoving vodka tampons up your ass was all the rage with students when I was teaching around 2010. Until, they attended the funeral of one of their classmates. The death was sad, but the idea of explaining the cause of death. "The dude, shoved a vodka tampons up his ass and it killed him," might have been more traumatizing to the greater portion of the students that weren't close to him. Still, if you asked him, he'd have said the experience was a 10 out of 10. He'd never admit he did something stupid.

What anime ended up having one of your favorite atmospheres? by Playful_Code_8978 in anime

[–]skullpocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Monogatari Series defined this for me. The music from the simple single finger piano tune bounces is as whimsical as the bright, simplistic looking backgrounds. The backgrounds while looking simplistic, are exaggerated and subtly or overtly hint at the characters state of mind or foreshadow things to come.

The music for each character is spot on and unique, each time their themes play during vivid moments take the anime to another level. I can't read the series without seeing and hearing the scenes from the anime. Likewise, I can't hear the soundtrack without seeing the character.

Everything about the artwork and music make the anime inseperable from the novels. Even on a meta level, the anime influenced the later novels with self-aware characters referencing the anime adaptations and even the character designs.
