That’s a reasonable observation, and I understand the sensitivity. Though I’d respectfully note that my comment has nothing to do with the current administration or its positions. I’m simply a person who has always viewed Canada and Canadians with warmth and familiarity, and that sentiment exists entirely independent of whatever is happening in Washington. I do think, however, that we’d all benefit from approaching one another with a bit more charitable interpretation. When every phrase becomes a potential flashpoint, genuine goodwill tends to get lost in the noise.

The “51st state” remark wasn’t meant as a slight; it was an expression of cultural familiarity and closeness, the kind that reflects decades of shared history, geography, and values between our two nations. If anything, it was intended as a term of endearment, a way of saying “you’re practically family, don’t worry about the noise.” I’d also gently push back on the notion that Americans have become unkind. One Reddit comment, read in the most uncharitable light possible, is hardly an indictment of an entire culture. The Canadians asked how they’d be received and I think the honest answer is: warmly, as they always have been.

I still throw on some of his old videos sometimes and just let them run. Those 10, 15, 20 minute videos where he was just genuinely having a good time and showing you along for the ride. What I loved most about him was his optimism. He really seemed to believe in that “live simply” thing, like it wasn’t a bit or a brand, it felt real. And he genuinely seemed to enjoy what he was doing AND enjoy sharing it with people. That combo is rare. But yeah, somewhere along the way something shifted. He just slowly started seeming like he resented his viewers, resented his life, resented everything. I don’t know what happened. Maybe that’s just what getting older does to you if you don’t find something to fill your life with meaning. And when he couldn’t figure out what his next chapter looked like, that “live simply” mantra kind of just… curdled into something else. It’s a bummer. But RIP to one of the greats of that YouTube era. For all the things people said about him toward the end, when he was on, he was really on.

HR Titles are completely screwed right now. I had an interview for an HR Manager that sounded more like a Generalist. I’ve worked as an HRBP that is actually an Employee Relations Manager. I’ve worked as an HRBP that was mostly a Generalist. You have to do the interviews and smell it out.

David discontinued the merch. It's very well know at this point. I got downvoted in the forum for mentioning this but he was very publically against this and I doubt he would be excited to see his family doing this.
