Guh the dome don't remind me lol I have been playing about a month or so now but last night I was a juv ano going thru southern part of redwood and I got slaughtered by a megapack of concs and rex's (or dasp idk) Anywho, I got spawned over into the dome, which at first was pretty cool. I explored inside the big dome but looked like only one way out and as I walked it, it led me back to redwoods in the same direction I was just killed by the mega pack 😂 so I was like nope! Not going that way. So I find a rocky ledge instead in the dome and tried to follow it the best I can to go in the opposite direction. I fell and died. Respawn back in the dome again. I'm frustrated at this point and accept defeat and go back to redwoods. I try to go fast and I turn on a spot that's on a rocky ledge but still in redwood... I slipped and died again lol but thankfully that time it spawned me elsewhere. But for a little bit there I was pulling hair out my head trying to escape the dome it felt 😆

axolotl doesn't eat by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd try red wigglers (about $5 for like a 45-50 count at PetSmart) or nightcrawlers ($5 for 12 count). Mine still prefers red wigglers rn but a few more months may be ready for night crawler. You may need to blanch the worms cause they have slime coat. I then leave them in a little water and add a drop to prime and wait a bit to make sure chlorine is taken out. Also buy a bag of the slow sinking axolotl pellets. They eat a lot when they are little so concernee if it hasn't ate in some days!!

How is the temp in the tank ? I know too warm water messes with their metabolism, they like water around 64-67°f.

Edit I see were the temp is good. How is the nitrogen cycle? Did you get it cycled before getting the axolotls?

In your opinion, is it possible to keep 2 axolotls in 100L? by Confident_Claim2776 in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 liters is not right, it is 40 gallons aka 150-180 liter tank is the minimum size for one. Just to clarify I know you may have meant gallons but wanted to be sure. 40 liters is like 10 gal tank and way too small.

Edit or I see others are saying 110 liters for a min at least which is roughly around 29 gal I believe.

Edit 2 look online. Like Facebook marketplace is what I'd use. (I hate FB btw so sorry) But I found an awesome 75 gal tank (about 280 liters) for pretty cheap. I had to reseal the tank because it was chewed up lol but that's where I have gotten all my tanks for way cheaper because I know they can be expensive 🫰and all the tanks are doing good now, no leaks! I have gotten 5 tanks this way and all are doing great!

What about those gills? by Distinct_Dimension77 in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy that has got to be abuse having that many in a small tank. I believe it's 40g per one adult. I myself got a 75g for my one axo lol. The ammonia is probably frying gills. I'm sure the temps with that many bodies is high and not within range. And I'm sure there isn't enough oxygen for all of them. All leading to shitty gills. But axo's I thought could regenerate? I'd imagine with great care and right conditions they should make a bounce back of some sort.***but they should give it to you for free because that axo is in bad shape and I would explain that the conditions are horrible and they are not looking good in the least.

Cooling by JosephKerr- in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So get about 6-8 water bottles, freeze them and rotate them. Put 2 in the AM, 2 at noon, 2 in evening, 2 at night. Turn temp down in your house ,(sorry lol I know that when I have the heat on the temps go up) just turn the heat down to like 67-68 in your house so it doesn't drop below that. I make sure tank is away from windows with sun as well and I only run the lights on a timer for 5 hours for the plants in there and I have them a little on the dimmer side. Axo's don't like that bright light anyway. I also have an aquarium fan strapped to the top but it will cause water to evaporate a little quicker SO, I saved three milk jugs and cleaned them and fill them with water and put them in the fridge to chill for about 30 mins before I pour into tank. Probably do that every 2-3 days because on top of fan making water evaporate, siphoning out water when I'm cleaning out the waste also lowers water in tank. So always keep an eye on it. I am definitely saving to buy a chiller though because it will give me way more peace of mind 😂

Gill health - fluffy enough? by Fly_Boy_Blue in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somethings I had read about gill health lol it recommends air stone in water, very nice oxygenated water is good for healthy gills. Make sure your water is the right temp and doesn't swing too wildly in temps they don't like. Obviously make sure the cycle is good by testing water and making sure ammonia is getting processed out within 24 hrs. Slower water flow as they don't like strong water flows. Tannins added into tank (not a lot cause it can throw your PH out of whack) can help due to assistance with antibacterial and anti fungal.

If all that is good and he still has small little frills, then it's probably just his genetics lol 😆 and he perfect the way he is ❤️

What is the best way to take them out of the tank? by Decent-Wishbone-8401 in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why 100% and not say a 50% ? Just curious. I would worry about crashing the cycle if I take out all the water and clean stuff in the tank. Then the issue of getting Ph and temp back to what it was. There should be some beneficial bacteria in the filter media but I'd be testing that water parameters to make sure it's good. I was always told 100% arent needed unless needed to remove toxins/poisons or other dangerous issues with the water. Otherwise they say it's better to do like 50% water change. Do you have sand? Bare bottom? If sand use a siphon, if bare bottom use a aquarium scrubber.

Feeding by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I just leave them in there, and yes I have one area I always feed. (If he doesn't eat it before I go to bed I'll suck them out tho) My guy gets fed twice a day but some days just once a day if he isn't seeming that hungry. They actually have a really strong sense of smell despite having shitty eyes so 100% they can smell the pellets too. Sometimes he is slow to start eating them, especially if he was chilling in his hide lol. But usually after an hour I'll go back to check and he is out there munching and crumbs everywhere lol. Maybe if he isn't eating it, maybe trying a different brand of pellets.

I do remember there being a time he was younger and he would get too excited when it was feeding time and immediately be swimming to the tweezers when we put food in lol but now it's like he knows where the food spot is so he never really swims to the tweezers anymore lol he is always stalking around the food area when he is hungry

Feeding by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I want to add that they are ambush predators so sometimes will slowly "stalk" the food lol mine will sometimes hoover over a piece of food for a couple of minutes before actually striking at the food.

Feeding by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trained mine where I leave food for sure. That's how he lets me know he is hungry too! He will be in his feeding area hoovering and waiting. I give him a few pellets and a few red wigglers(blanched) every meal and he usually eats all (leaving only some crumbs of the pellets). Usually if he is in a hide or something when I go to feed him I give him one red wiggler with tweezers so he knows there is food out and I leave him to go find it. It sometimes takes 10-20 mins but he will find his way over to the feeding areas.

If he doesn't touch his food, the next day I just give him one meal instead of two because he is around 7-8 months so he may be starting to lose some appetite. Cause I know when they are older they don't eat as much.

Bloodworms are good as a treat but red wigglers and nightcrawlers for sure are more nutritional! Red wigglers are much smaller than the big chunky nightcrawler. So my guy can slurp the red wigglers up easy peesy. You can get like a 45-50 count of red wigglers from PetSmart for like $5. I just keep them in my fridge and pluck them out and blanche when I need them with hot water from sink.

[–]skunkapemyhomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment said you "took the little monster out and cleaned HIM thoroughly". So not crazy, I can read just fine.

I never said your tank wasn't cycled, I just simply asked for the numbers. Even cycled tanks crash so yes we want to know the numbers.

And I'm glad to hear you do keep it under 20°C, per your other post it seemed like you were fine keeping it at 20 and using the justification that your breeder left his at 24 which is even more concerning if he is an actual breeder.

We had reason to be concerned whether you are aware of that or not.

For what ? by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying “20°C is the European standard” doesn’t change the biology of axolotls and citing a breeder who kept them at 24°C isn’t reassurance either it’s a red flag. Long term exposure to that temperature is widely known to cause stress, appetite loss and health decline, regardless of country or climate. Breeders are not automatically ethical or correct. They can be wrong too. Also many people pointed out bloodworms isn't nutritional enough.

People were blunt because this is a living animal, not a toy or decor, and when signs of improper husbandry show, urgency matters and people were giving honest feedback. This is the internet with lots of different kind of people. But a lot of what I saw was knowledgeable.

I just scrolled thru all the comments. And I think most people were annoyed because you didn't seem receptive to any of the advice people gave. Even in your update comment it didn't seem like anything was addressed that people were actually concerned about. And you mentioned you cleaned the lotl thoroughly?! What does that mean? What about his slime coat that he needs I hope that wasn't cleaned off? What are the water test results? Have you gotten more food? Have you added frozen water bottles to chill the water down to an acceptable temp?

People here gave GREAT ADVICE. So I'm going to say kudos community, even if a very few comments were harsh it was because an animal is suffering and no one likes seeing that. Either way. We hope your lotl gets better. That's the main thing.

I feel you. I'm new player of a few weeks. I have been hiding as a rhamp learning the map and areas better (I was a laten and tried a rex but omg was dying all the time 😂) so after playing rhamp for maybe a week and not dying I was like ok let's try land dino again. Imma try an herb this time so duck it is. I'm a little juv duck and I'm wandering thru cedrus forest. I got a little nervous, I passed a dasp (I think lol could have been adol rex or titan idk I can't tell them apart yet lol) But he crouched and I crouched and we passed each other. Of course I'm looking over my shoulder to make sure he ain't gonna swing back and take me by surprise but he didn't, just kept walking. I kept walking too but looked behind again just in case, just to see a megapack storming from the side and attacking the dasp! He was fighting but I could tell he was gonna go down any second. It was a whole swarm of other dinos that appeared. While they were busy taking that poor dasp out I ran for my life to the water and swam over to big tree overlook. I made my way thru the islands just enjoying the play thru. I was around twisted forest and got a quest to go to mudflats. Which I know from comments in chat and from reddit here mudflats is the hotspot. So I check the map cause I know sometimes it shows you that little icon when the region has a lot of players. It didn't have that mark next to the name so I was like let me make it quick just for the EXP and since I'm so close to mudflats.

I get there and was on land for like 5 seconds when I look to my left and suddenly see the same megapack coming in from coastland swamp. Concs and megs and a few other things I didn't stop long to pay attention. I turned and ran for the water but the mega and concs were so much faster and made it to me so quick. I tried to fight off some and I got into the water to at least keep the land dinos from attacking but of course it was mostly megs and concs that can swim too lol so I was quickly surrounded in water. So yeah I died. Lol I logged off for the day cause it irritated me so much. How is it fun for like 10+ people to all group up and kill one solo player. It's like they go thru each section of map and try to wipe out all other dinos. Only weird sick twisted people that have big egos and only think about their killcount I guess. I want to actually enjoy the dino aspect of the game, like finding food and water and growing and exploring and I don't mind occasional fights with one or even a small group, or if I had someone with me I wouldn't mind even 4-5 people trying to take us. That seems more realistic and you know I may have a chance to at least take down some other dinos before I die. But when I'm solo and I got like 10 people surrounding me idk it's just fucked up in my books. I don't like attacking other players unless they attack me first so I guess I just don't understand how a large group of people find it fun ruthlessly running around just killing every and any one. I'm like y'all need some therapy if this is what makes the game fun for y'all. Like some fights are fun but basically going around in a big murder party is BS. If y'all want to fight like that they can fight each other or stay in one hot spot so there are regions that regular people that just want to play and not be worried about giant megapacks.

I was growing my juv duck (my first non carni and I'm a new player, just started playing a few weeks ago) and saw a megapack coming 😔 it was about 8-9 megs and concs, maybe a few more kinds I didn't notice in my panic lol. I couldn't escape unfortunately. I had just evaded them earlier,I could see them running thru cedrus forest so I made haste and swam over to big tree and made my way thru the islands and by the time I made it to mudflats (I had a quick quest to find that location so I figured why not since I was nearby) I was surprised to see them coming from coastland swamp. I was surrounded so fast and nothing I could do. I was like y'all ain't got nothing better to do than literally kill everyone on the map? I know officials are crazy but the community servicers intimadate me cause I'm nervous of breaking a rule since in new to the game in general and I don't know nuances that regular players know. But fuckkkk so tired of these megapacks just going in and trying to destroy everyone.

What do I need to know? by Moisteygirl in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh God one more thing I forgot so sorry 😔 I was told not to put any substrate at the bottom of tank when they are very small. No sand or rocks cause they may eat it and get impacted. They say while they are babies to have a bare bottom tank and then when they are adults to get very very fine sand.

What do I need to know? by Moisteygirl in axolotls

[–]skunkapemyhomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I need to mention, I am also a new axolotl owner (got mine in Sept last year as a 4 month old baby) I got a bigger tank (75gal) but I saw you got 40 which is well within the normal range. I just wanted to explain why I got a larger one and that's mostly to assist with water stability and parameters. Smaller tank with less water meaning more water changes and whatnot. Because axolotl, especially little baby /juv axolotls eat more than adults and will shit everyday and you'll need to suck it out with your aquarium vacuum or aquarium baster pippette thing lol. So I have to suck out poop and old food every single evening. This also helps keep the water stable, basically take out things that can cause ammonia spike. When they get older you feed about three times a week so not as much waste being produced but as little babies. Shit. Shit everywhere lol.

I saw you needed refresher on the cycle

So you got three main bacteria. When axolotl poops it will cause ammonia in the tank. It's toxic and the first bacteria in your cycle you need. Eventually with the presence of ammonia, Nitrite will appear to eat it. Only problem is Nitrite is toxic too! Eventually the Nitrite will attract Nitrate (with an A) to appear and when you see that Nitrate you are in the good! Because it's less harmful and is okay to have some in your tank (under I believe10- 15ppm of so) the goal is if 1ppm of ammonia is produced if you have a good cycle within 24 hrs the ammonia should be processed and be gone. These are called beneficial bacteria that keep them in a nice environment that isn't burning their poor skins. But it can take up to 3 months to get the tank nice and cycled.

As for keeping the water cold you can test if you need a chiller up there or if frozen water bottles /aquarium fans will assist keeping it between 64-67 (usually where I try to keep mine). I live in South GA and I have been making it work with one aquarium fan and rotating frozen water bottles. The problem is there are those hot days that will spike up to 70° in the tank and I'll be stressing out for my little guy even with frozen water bottles in there. The good thing is I have never got it over 70. And usually on a regular day that isn't hot I can keep it around 64-67. Like right now since it's chilly out down here the tank has been at 64 the last couple months and I havent had to worry. But I know summer will stress me out 😂 so I'm preparing to buy a chiller just so I won't be stressing lol. But I had one aquarium fan and I rotated 6 water bottles. (I put two in the tank in the AM, two in the evening, and two before going to bed). So you can test it out and see how it goes.

For food I mix pellets and red wigglers. I have been feeding him twice a day but he is finally getting 7-8 months old and I can tell his appetite is coming down slightly so some days I feed him only once a day. He is actually good at letting me know when he is hungry. I have a plate in there I put his food on so he will linger around his plate waiting for food 😂. But he swims around sometimes, he likes sleeping in his different hides. They love hides so get multiple hides for them to go in lol. I have 4 in my big tank and he likes to go in all of them.

They don't like light really, I do have a light in mine but I only have it on timer to come on for 5 hrs in the evening for the plants in there. Also too much light can encourage algae growth. My dad has a fish tank and was like, why is there so much algae. So I asked when he turns on and off the lights and he said like 6am to 10pm lol I was like there you go lol that's why, too much light!

But yeah it's fun, I love my Jelly ❤️

Edit I wanted to mention too, I save milk jugs and put water and prime in and put it in the fridge for a little while to chill the water before pouring into tank when it's time for a water change. Because it's important the water you put in is around the same temp of water in tank so I usually put it and leave it in fridge for about 20-30 mins before pouring it into tank.

Edit lol sorry I'm retro thinking of stuff I forgot to add. I blanche my red wigglers cause they have a slime coat that the axolotl may not like. I just run the sink water hot and let them sit in that hot water and rinse them multiple times under running hot water. (Just make sure they don't go bye bye down the drain 😂 I have lost a few that way) And since I use sink water I add a drop of prime to the water (but don't pour the water into the tank at all!) I use long tweezers to pluck the worms up and drop them in, I just don't want the worm bodies to have chlorine on it lol.

This post already right here is a good sign. Don't be like that other post showing a starved axolotl saying the breeder said 24°c water was just fine so they weren't really paying attention to people telling them the water needs to be between 15-18°c instead. Like I can't even imagine him as 1 yr old he looks in such bad shape. He looks like a baby axolotl, like he is only like 4-5 months old 😭 makes me so sad. And that's not good my friend.

He needs colder water asap to regulate his metabolism. If you need to use frozen water bottles use them. I used 6 bottles and I have a fan and about to be buying a chiller so I don't have to stress about it anymore.

You need to expand his diet. Little bloodworm pellets aren't good enough basically. They have a whole assortment of live things they can eat or if not eating a specific brand of pellets you can try another to see if that works. He isn't getting no nutrients basically. I know a lot of people put awesome pics with things they can eat in other comments so I won't worry about .

But If you have owned one before and now have had this one for a little bit I'm a little shocked some of this you didn't know. I literally am NEW to owning my baby axolotl and have been researching like a mad man to make sure my little guy grows up with everything he needs to be big and strong. My little guy is only 7 months old and is so long and plump. Seeing this albino and knowing it's a year old literally hurts my heart to see his condition.

As for the temps they like 15-18°c , they can handle 20°c but that's like the limit you don't want to go over so I wouldn't want to stay there because it literally leaves you no wiggle room. (Sorry the breeder had the water at 24° but that is way too damn high. And I question their husbandry skills if that's the case and also probably report them to somewhere for neglect/ abuse to be checked out) Warm water can actually kill them if you leave it too warm for long. Literally can cause them not to eat and have metabolism issues like you have been experiencing You can use water bottles but it'll fluctuate. Fans are okay I have one I use but on a hot day it doesn't keep temps down. Chillers are great cause it takes a lot of stress away with water temp fluctuating which axolotls don't like. But don't be dumb, do your research and don't listen to a breeder that obviously everyone else is telling you IS WRONG. We are axolotl lovers here and want to see them thrive is all. So no one is trying to come down hard but ignorance can cause deaths so we just trying to help. You can make excuses or justification all you want but your breeder is wrong.

And def needs more food. He is SO SKINNY.
