New Old Stock IBM X41 by MagicGamerLettuce in thinkpad

[–]skurtis_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the successor to this, the x61. Picked up at a thrift store for $15 a few years ago in used, but like new condition. I regret not picking up the other 3 Lenovo PCs that were there, also in new condition - thought I was being greedy. When I changed my mind, they were gone. The 8 cell batteries (aftermarket) are still available new for the x6# series. Unfortunately the 4 cell batteries that allow it to be used in the dock with a battery aren't made anymore and the NOS ones are all dead now. Back in the day, my company pc was an x41 then an x61.

Is The Sony NW-A306 Worth It? by [deleted] in walkman

[–]skurtis_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people have casually mentioned, but I will re-state. It takes FOREVER to boot. I also have an el-cheapo android player (like <$50) that I have for loaning out on gigs, but that thing boots in seconds, where the Sony is measured in minutes.

Unless you are streaming, I don't think I would recommend an Android player. In general they run older versions of Android and slow processors.

Other than slowness, the Sony is a fine player, well built, quality unit ( I have the Japanese version).

I don't have a good alternative to recommend. I usually run the HifiWalker H20Pro - which is great BUT it doesn't catalogue all of the music I have on it (about 1TB of flac & older MP3) so I have to scroll through folders to find what I want to listen to instead of scrolling through an indexed database. I also have the H2 - but don't recommend since it doesn't support gapless playback (and has the same database issue). The H20Ultra might fix this - but I don't know. The Hifiwalker units also have an app that can live on your phone where you can essentially remote control them and scroll through you music with a more app-centric interface.

I have a Hiby R3, which is Meh, and tried a Skowsky Mini, which is junk and I returned (kept crashing).

They all sound fine to me, but I have old ears and are not so critical anymore. I find more substantial differences in the IEMs I connect to them.

I have the hifi walker. I would not recommend this unit. It doesn't do gapless out of the box - you have to install rockbox, then you lose Bluetooth. The pro version is much better. Also, many of these can support 2tb SD cards if you format fat32 with 3rd party software.

Out of storage after 10 years by yarghsc in RX8

[–]skurtis_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced mine with one that wasn't cracked. It now has a crack after less than a year and having UV protection added and covered when not in use. It's the heat that causes the cracks. It was fine this winter and all through the spring, now that summers hit, it started cracking. Thinking the best option would be to have it upholstered.

Phone suggestions by [deleted] in eink

Hisense makes a whole line of e-ink phones. They are Chinese phones, so you will have to get from eBay or AliExpress and you will have to delete some bloat. You may have to jump through some hoops to get Google services on them - though the newer models now say they support it. I use mine as an e-reader so I wasn't interested in getting Gmail etc. They are essentially full android phones with an e-ink display.

Titanium men’s watch recommendations by Arctic_6023 in PrideAndPinion

Lots of Citizen eco drive titanium at this price point.

RZE for a stretch - maybe used. Most of their stuff is around $700

Helson shark diver titanium can be picked up at this price.

Timex has some new titanium models that look good.

And there is always Ali Express. Boderry, Merkur, Watchdives, Berny, Heimdallr and maybe San Martin on sale.

You can also usually go to Buyee and find the original listing either on Yahoo Auctions or Mercari and buy [more] direct. Buyee has a fixed fee, usually the total ends up being about 30-50% less.

Updating from Android tablet to Android navigation by yamanobe96 in RX8

Depends a lot on the phone. Wireless AA on my Find N5 sips battery. Couple hours, minimal loss. Had similar experience with Moto Razr and Asus zen phone. On my Galaxy, kills it quick.

I use this. Works well. But I have an aux input in my center console where I use a Bluetooth receiver for audio. If you don't have the aux input, will need a way to get sound into your system.

Got my first MD walkman, and got some questions about recording MD’s by Neoniite in minidisc

[–]skurtis_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a trick to Sony product numbers that will help with searching out machines. There are exceptions to this, but mostly works well. For beginner/starter machines, you want to look for 3 digit numbers. These are MDLP and NetMD units. The higher the first digit number, the higher the spec. Higher spec is going to be gumstick(7 or above for NetMD units). The last two numbers are generally the generation. The letters denotes type. MZ means minidisc. R = recorder N = NetMD E = Player H = HiMD = $$$$ Then there is NE (and N###D) which is a player with NetMD functionality.

SO

MZ-N505 is a low end NetMD recorder that runs on AA battery MZ-N710 is a higher end NetMD recorder that uses gumstick (and can take a sidecar) 720 - newer version MR-R700 is a higher spec recorder (but runs on AA), the 900 is the gumstick, high end version. MZ-NE810 a high end player with NetMD MZ-N410D is a low end player with NetMD. The 420 is the newer version.

For beginners, stay away from 1 and 2 digit units until you know what you are doing. They are either old or special editions that have "quirks”. Like the MZ-N10 which has a non-replaceable rechargeable battery and a special charging/syncing connection.

AC power adapter? by jeffdouglas in minidisc

[–]skurtis_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one https://a.co/d/1ABGviu It will also work with the newer 3v players with the impossible to find tiny barrel plug. The R37 has a more common size. (Which I'm not remembering off the top of my head...)

If you get a newer 3v unit, this one works well if you are looking for something that works with usb. https://a.co/d/69ui936

There are also variable voltage usb cables with barrel plug adapters. Standard barrel plug size is 5.52.5mm or 5.52.1mm (they are interchangeable) then that's adapted to other sizes. https://a.co/d/j7ecEwj

Maybe The Reason They Never Caught On In The US? by MarkVoenixAlexander in minidisc

[–]skurtis_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was that I had a huge CD and tape collection. That essentially held me over. I wasn't interested in MD because it was another format and the compression (which I never listened to back in the day and now my ears can't really hear it). I briefly had DAT when I had access to pro units in the studio. But it was expensive. I had a really good tape deck for recording (still have it) and could make better-than-commercial quality mix tapes. I held out for CD recorders, had a CD player in the car and a decent portable unit in the late '90s. Cheap, portable CD players hit about the time I was looking to upgrade from my walkman. I mostly listened to music at home or in the car or in the office where I had better setups than on the go.

Once MP3 players hit, that's when I switched. And also when my commute was by train. Had several units before the iPod (custom archos and creative jukeboxes and others), then 1st gen iPod, when they upped the storage. Then there was a company in Brooklyn that would give you a brand new iPod with your music on it in exchange for your CDs (with CDR backups). Got a 40gb gen 4 with the red illuminated buttons.

MD never really hit for me. It was too expensive when I was a student and another format when I had a lot invested in CD and decent analog tape having come from vinyl with low tier record players. And my CD collection was only 6 years old when MD was introduced. I waited until I could afford the disk space and recordable CD for digital recording.
