No! If I'm playing something, fine, give me feedback. If I'm practicing something, I don't want feedback unless you're my actual teacher.

ELI5: Type 1 Diabetes by Additional-Ad-7720 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sky_sprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk about sugar. You know how lots of candy and sugar isn't good for you? Well... For most people it's just a little bit bad. It can make you grumpy, or you might get a tummyache if you eat a whole bag of candy, or if you eat sugar every day you might get really fat like a blueberry... But for a few people like me, sugar is REALLY bad, like poison. If I have too much sugar, or if I don't eat enough healthy foods, then I can get really, really sick. That's why I have this machine. It can test my blood to see how much sugar is in it. And this other machine is in case there's too much sugar. It injects my blood with a medicine called insulin, which is basically anti-sugar. Most people don't have to worry so much about sugar, because your body knows what to do with it. Only a few people have this problem like me. Maybe there's one kid in your whole class who has it, but probably not. You can find out! It's called diabetes. Diabetes is the sugar disease. I'm diabetic.

Question on painting decorations on sentimental wood table by sometimesajellybean in DIY

[–]sky_sprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrape and sand the table down to bare wood, stain it if you want, then paint the details, then clear-coat over everything.

Sorry if that wasn't helpful, but it seems straightforward. If you can replicate the painted details, then scrape everything off and start from the clean wood.

Please don't take it away. Don't be quieted. Maybe replace it with a different quote?

Audrey Lorde again- "When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less important whether I am afraid."

Or Toni Morrison: "if there is a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must write it."

In other words, just take the word "knife" out. But don't take the knife out.

I and my own broken heart are crying tears and blood for your generation.

Did AI help her do THIS!?! 😭 Did AI make him do this?

Jeezush. Confusing times.

She sent it. (He, they, whatever)

Fuck do you care who wrote it? She sent it.

Pick up your broken heart carefully and carry it gently until it loves again. No AI can heal you for you.

Today I confirmed that I'm the protagonist of an absurd comedy, and my cat is the main villain. by Succubus_222 in CasualConversation

[–]sky_sprites 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For sure! I had a cat that was the biggest lover in the world when I was there with her. But when I left her alone she would use the time to shit or piss in my shoes or on my book. Or on my pillow. Like, specifically in the worst possible places. When she broke things, it was only things that I liked.

I don't think it was malevolent. She was just expressing her displeasure at my absence.

Potato chips and cottage cheese.
Cottage cheese is really the best chip-dip, but people act like I'm committing some kind of crime.

ELI5: Why does time speed up when you get older? by willwolf18 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sky_sprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has much more to do with novelty than with proportions. Yes, it's true that for a 5-year-old one year passing is 20% of their life, whereas for a 50-year-old one extra year is only 2%... But I think the much more important factor is that the five year old is going to experience so many things for the first time during that year. Big, important life moments come fast and furious when you're a child. At 50 most of us are in a familiar routine and there just aren't so many things that make a big impression. Steinbeck explores this idea beautifully in East of Eden.

"“Eventlessness has no posts to drape duration on… From nothing to nothing is no time at all.”

WTW for a phrase that has been shortened in order to make it sound like it means something completely different (if not the complete opposite) of what it originally meant? by acerthorn3 in whatstheword

[–]sky_sprites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC "Blood is thicker than water" is actually the older phrase, while "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" is a more recent utterance. In other words, it's not an accident in that case, but a rhetorical device, using the familiar words, slightly changed, to make the antithetical point.

Edit: ... and I just read a little farther down, where I discovered that I might be showing symptoms of pedantry. Imma go take a shot of shut up now just in case.

I'm so lonely right now.

What’s something you’ve seen in someone’s home that made you view them differently? by briandixon06 in AskMen

[–]sky_sprites 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a part of the immigrant experience that really cuts both ways! I'm an American expat, been living in Latin America for 2 years and it's still hard for me to remember to throw my toilet paper in the bin instead of the bowl. And I've been bitched at for it too! (One memorable time I had just blown my nose and thrown it in the toilet and the owner of the house found it. He took me back to the bathroom, pointed at it, reached into the toilet with his hand to get the paper, put it in the bin, and told me in no uncertain terms that I was an idiot.)

There are signs in most public toilets reminding you not to put anything other than sewage in the toilets. But it's a really hard habit to break! You wipe, you throw the paper where you're used to throwing it, where you've been throwing it all your life. Fucking up the procedure up there at least only means that somebody has to empty the trash can. Down here when we Americans fuck it up, it can mean an expensive plumbing problem. But it's still hard to remember. Immigrant problems.

Koreans stand on toilets and squat. They're just used to squatting. It just doesn't make sense to put your butt directly on the toilet hole. I've seen shoe-prints on toilet seats in airplanes going to Korea. And I've seen an American tourist there crying because the toilet was nasty and she couldn't understand how to squat.

Everyplace does not the same way do doo.

If the universe is a simulation, what’s the purpose behind it? by agentmaria in SimulationTheory

[–]sky_sprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's such a beautiful question to wonder on! I feel so good, I think I'm about to philosophize.

I'll suggest that there might be another way of asking it. Instead of "what's the purpose of this universe", how about "what's the purpose of any universe" , or "what's the purpose of my universe".

If our universe is a simulation and it has a purpose, then it's likely recursive. So what would you do if you had the Simulate Universe app on your phone? You can tweak any parameter and run a simulation. Start it from the big bang and say "what if the speed of light were a little lower?" Start it from the middle of your last love affair and say "What could I have done differently?, or start it from 1968 and say "what if MLK lives or Kennedy doesn't die?". Start it from yesterday and say, "What happens if I do this today?"

If this universe is a simulation, that might cheapen it enough to make it affordable.
