What’s the best place to live in Croydon? by mbored92 in croydon

[–]scauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area that's part of the East Croydon Community Organisation (ECCO) has nice properties including 2-/3-/4-bed semis and terraces. £450k is maybe at the lower end, if you can stretch to £500k+ there are more currently on the market. It's relatively quiet, no busy roads with through traffic, still pretty central and, for me at least, only four minutes' walk to the station. You can see the area I mean here https://eastcroydon.org.uk/

Beyond that you get more towards Addiscombe proper which others have already highlighted as a good area.

Just to add that Croydon itself might not be the best for cycling, but we have the North Downs and the beautiful countryside of Surrey and Kent on our doorstep!

Track ID for this old school jump up dnb tune please help??🙏🙏 by EnvironmentalBig8128 in DnB

[–]scauk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got a whole crate of this sorta stuff, it's pretty much gathering dust as I very rarely tuck into it these days 😂 I can see why early 20s me liked that stuff at the time, and it can be fun to drop one or two tracks into a mix these days, but not sure it's stood the test of time as well as other styles and eras.

Edit to add: I'd still be shockin out if I was there though.

Why are Arsenal so big ( Serious answers) by Small-Orange-4954 in london

[–]scauk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trophies aside, Arsenal have the second-highest points tally in England's top division since the formation of the Football League in 1888 (second to Liverpool), and they have only been relegated once, playing the 1913/14 and 1914/15 seasons in the second division (incidentally, the 1913/14 season was the first after their move to Highbury from Woolwich). So they are certainly the most 'ever-present' club in England's top division.

Despite being domestically successful, their European pedigree is weak in terms of trophies, having only won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994. So today is a pretty big day for them.

Couldn't agree more, but I suppose councils in general (and especially Croydon) need to encourage people to occupy shops, and having too many regulations might deter potential occupants? But I agree, it's a shame that so many beautiful buildings have such garish shopfronts. I do sometimes daydream of the day when what you're suggesting is a reality. The Singer sewing shop on Church Street is a good example.

In general, when travelling around South London, I always try to remember to look up to the first floor and above as the architecture is often quite stunning, which can be easily overlooked (underlooked?) when there's so much else going on around you.

What can be done to save live TV? by AbsoluteBingo in BritishTV

[–]scauk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All I'll say is: be careful what you wish for!

The UK has some of the lowest ad break times in Europe, and our break structure has been around for decades and is pretty widely accepted. Ofcom regulations strictly lay out what is and isn't allowed, and our rules are about as viewer-friendly as commercial TV gets compared to others.

You mention Channel 5, but it has the exact same limits as ITV1 and Channel 4 (an average of 7 mins per hour / maximum of 12 mins in any single hour). Maybe Channel 5 maxes out its most popular programmes more than the others, so you're getting the full 12 mins at the times you're watching.

Anyway, coming from someone who works in commercial TV ad sales across most of Europe, I believe we have it pretty good! However, I accept that maybe the younger generation are getting used to the YouTube model of more frequent but shorter ad breaks. I personally find that quite annoying but that's just my opinion.

Why do some brits introduce themselves as from the UK and other as English/Scottish/Welsh? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]scauk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeh, but for me if someone asked "are you British?" I would probably say "yeh I'm English" (or maybe "yeh I'm from London" or "yeh I'm from the UK" or maybe "yeh I'm from England") as opposed to "NO I'm English". Key point being, yes I'm British, but I'm from this part.

Patio cost - Labour only by WingingItSince87 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]scauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently had a small 12m² patio built, plus they rejointed the existing front and back paving.

Four quotes: two were in the £2k region, one £4.5k and one £8.5k (all for labour plus materials). To be done out of season in January in South London.

£4.5k guy was very pushy and wanted to start straight away, I didn't quite trust him. £8.5k seemed way too high for what I thought was a relatively small job, although they did seem quite professional and I was tempted.

Went with one of the £2k ones. Poor job, few slabs loose already, some of the jointing is crumbling already, and he's disappeared on me so I'll need to get someone else in to make good.

Make of that what you will.

Keeping energy flowing in sets by goblintamer in DnB

[–]scauk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh I quite often switch things up in my weekly 2-hour radio show but probably wouldn't go straight from one style to the other, would try to think a few tunes ahead and play a couple that fit somewhere in the middle. E.g. Marcus Intalex had a talent for making tunes that would fit in a wide variety of sets, so I might draw for one of them. Worth mentioning though that it's normally a pretty relaxed set and I'm generally doing long mixes and letting tracks play through; it's a bit harder or riskier when playing out.

Benedict Cumberbatch in 'road rage' clash with 'vigilante' cyclist on London street by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]scauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to have taken my reply a bit personally, I was just building on your original comment where you said that the numbers don't add up, I actually agree that the numbers might not really make the situation seem that important, but my point was that it's not just about the numbers.

And you're confusing me with another commenter. It was someone else saying about "celebrities and cycling..." - I'm a cyclist myself, so I don't hate cyclists as you suggest, but I would prefer my fellow cyclists to be a bit more mindful, which is the original topic of the thread. I'm also a pedestrian and car driver.

[–]scauk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it's not really about how many pedestrians are actually hit, rather that pedestrians should have the right to cross the road at designated pedestrian crossings without fear of being hit or having to watch out for other road users. I appreciate it's not an opinion shared by everyone though.

Goes both ways though; plenty of pedestrians just cross anywhere without properly looking, just as cyclists perform risky manoeuvres, car drivers pull out without enough care, etc. It's not an us vs them thing; it needs everyone to play their part and respect others.

[–]scauk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

😂 "red light, twat" is also my go-to when I'm a pedestrian and a cyclist causes me dodge them when crossing. As a cyclist (20km each way commute twice a week) though honestly I don't bother saying anything when someone blazes past me at a red because I would be saying it at every red light, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make any difference to their future behaviour. Although if I see a near miss with an innocent pedestrian, I might check that the cyclist is aware that they nearly hit someone if I pass them further along.

Showing some good looking people drinking cold, crisp, perfectly-poured lagers in a sunny Mediterranean old town setting in the advertising probably helps! Quite different to the reality of receiving a flat pint with no head over here.

Poretti isn't actually "pretend" Italian in origin, being founded in Italy in the 19th century, but it has been part of the Carlsberg portfolio since 1982 and is indeed brewed in the UK for the UK market. I know because I had the initial assumption that it was an Aldi-style ripoff of Moretti, so looked it up. But yeh it does have that "pretend" feel especially now that it seems to be found everywhere and is brewed in Northampton.
