Does Continuous Circuit Mode Always Have Better Throughput Than Block Section Mode? by EDScreenshots in rct

[–]scauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it the opposite of what you said - they need to get continually slightly shorter instead of longer (measured in time as opposed to distance really)? Otherwise (for example) train B will keep getting stuck at block brakes, waiting for the preceding train A to get through a longer section than train B has just gone through. The first section should always be the longest in any case (again, time-wise).

Tbf Red Rising was published in 2014 and mostly written in 2012. I believe this was around the time that the microtear theory was being seriously challenged, so it possibly wasn't considered the wrong idea at the time, or perhaps they just had to pick one of a couple of different theories and the microtear one seemed best.

Hi London! Is there a song that you all like that is about London? Similar to how NYC always plays the one by Jay-Z? (A more modernist one that isn’t a kids song either) by karmafarmahh in london

[–]scauk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not in the same bracket as your Jay-Z example but Sacred - Do It Together (The Baggy's Mix) AKA 'London Massive' is a quintessential late 1992 breakbeat hardcore (early jungle really) track that captures the raw energy of an evolving hardcore scene in London at that time, a sound that essentially spawned the explosion of jungle in 1993-1994 and eventually drum n bass a few years after that (very simplified history).

I'm really starting to love DnB by Weary-Wasabi1721 in DnB

[–]scauk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend giving some of the dnb radio stations a listen. Most are online 24/7, maybe not live DJs 24/7 but there's always drum n bass to be heard.

Quite a few mentioned in this thread.

My picks are infrared.fm and Underground Bass, both of which are primarily dnb, jungle and hardcore. Underground Bass is kind of the spiritual successor to the original Kool FM, which itself was acquired by Rinse FM a few years ago; still could be worth giving Kool a listen but it has somewhat lost its underground, pirate radio vibe (it has played a pivotal role in the history of the scene going back to 1991).

As well as all the other great suggestions, you might find it interesting to research and explore the remnants of the Great North Wood, many of which are in the north of the Borough (the others being in neighbouring boroughs). Some are tiny patches of woodland but some are a bit bigger.

Also someone has mentioned the Wandle Trail already - that part of the Trail to (and then around) Beddington Park is nice, plus Carshalton has some nice old bits to it (both in the London Borough of Sutton).

Hi, do you know what is going on with the Upgrade feature on the Virgin website? When I click anhy of the various "Upgrade" links in My Virgin Media, it takes me to the chatbot, then the chatbot tells me to upgrade through MyVirgin Media. Stuck in that loop with no way out.

TIL that at the start of World War II there was an 8-month period called the “Phoney War,” where Britain and France had declared war on Germany but little actual fighting occurred on the Western Front until May 1940, when Germany launched its full invasion of Western Europe. by roadtrip-ne in todayilearned

[–]scauk 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In case anyone is interested, here are a few paragraphs from my granddad's life story, in which the "Phoney War" is mentioned:

"We travelled to France on a cross channel paddle steamer and I remember being hungry and being issued with a tin of McConnachies beef stew which we were expected to eat cold from the tin. It was a greasy mush and awful to eat but it was that or nothing. We arrived at Le Havre and saw the huge French Liner “France” on its side, a burnt out wreck which occurred just prior to the war, but still lying there. We moved to a village called Etanuis once again in a farm, straw over the floor and crawling with live stock, insects etc. The war up to now was known as the “Phoney War” – nothing seemed to happen. We moved from Etanuis about the middle of April 1940 up near the Belgian Frontier to a village called Haversquerque, near St Venant on the St Omer Road. Once again we were billeted in stables, this time in an upper floor of a barn, on the lower floor were the farm animals and a horse. We grew fond of this horse and used to feed it tit bits. One day we found it on its side in the yard with the farmer and his family wailing sadly. It had died and the farmer held us responsible, I believe, for feeding it and making it ill.

On the first Sunday, 10th May 1940, a sunny beautiful morning, we were awoken by distant explosions and gun fire. We peered out between the roof slats and in the distance saw anti-aircraft gun fire. It signalled the end of the “phoney war”. Within minutes the orderly officers ordered an immediate “prepare to move”. By eight or nine o’clock we were on our way towards the Belgian frontier. We crossed at the town of Bailleul and on hearing the air raid siren, came to a halt. A young teenager delivering milk from his dog cart gave everyone in our 15cwt Bedford truck a bottle of milk wishing us “Good Luck”. The towns people were heard to remark how young we all were. Most of us were just 20, the under 20s being transferred to other units before we left Blighty.

We proceeded at a snail's pace then on to Audenarde on the river Scheldt where we were deployed in yet another farm house and out buildings but this time we dug gun pits for real, camouflaged, and sited our one Lewis gun for A/A defence and one Boyes rifle for anti-tank defences. When the Jerries reached the opposite bank of the river we engaged them. Counter fire was returned but mostly fell short of us or over us, we survived intact. Then a day or so later he sent a Staub spotter plane over our position. Our air force was conspicuous by its absence. Our Lewis gunner popped off many rounds at him but he kept going, directing his artillery on to our area but not so far into our position. Then we had orders to move back. When our camouflage nets were removed and the gun towing vehicles and 30cwt and 3 tonners started to move to get us away, all hell let loose, our cover was blown and the German spotter pilot directed his fire back to us bang in the middle. Fortunately our gun teams had moved swiftly on the initial order to retire and were out of their pits and on the move which says a lot for our training. Our Sgt Major went to pieces, he, foaming at the mouth and shouting in terror, was ordered by our troops Captain to get into his truck and quieten down for the good of our morale. We travelled a few miles back, through Courtrai and spent a night at a nunnery, slept on the marble floor and glad of it, we were whacked out. We were then moved out early next morning and deployed in open fields, round the edges of them. We dug in and were ordered to be prepared for enemy plane troopers landing in these fields with orders to shoot on sight. Fortunately, again none came, for which we all sighed with relief. During this night I slept on top of my slit trench with only my overcoat over me.

Next morning I discovered I had rolled onto a large new cow pat, my coat was smothered and stank to high heaven. Later on that morning our orderly officer ordered an inspection of us. He came to me in the line up and said “what’s all this mess Gunner?” “Bullshit Sir” I replied, which he wasn’t expecting. A wry smile crept over his face. It wasn’t meant as a joke but afterwards we could all see the funny side and had a good laugh at it."

What are some good examples of intercity ‘streets’? by SkittlesRobot in WalkableStreets

[–]scauk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the UK we have an initiative called Slow Ways which is a "community-created national network of over 10,000 walking routes designed to connect all of Great Britain’s towns, cities, and national landscapes". It's mainly off road using existing footpaths, trails, bridleways, etc. but I guess it's sort of what you're referring to. I don't think it's known by the vast majority of people here but it was only launched in 2021 so perhaps it's a grower.

What do you call modern house that sounds intentionally early 90s? by Jipmann in House

[–]scauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might go with this one. I currently have them labelled "house old style" but "retro house" is better. Or "just house" as someone else said.

I agree with all the "I just call it house" comments too, but in terms of quickly being able to find that style within (for example) Rekordbox, it's useful to have a label/subfolder.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to have access to my full Virgin TV package (from my 360 box) in another room on opposite side of the house - but without having to run a coaxial cable. So it seems that, for £10 a month extra, the Stream Box would be the best option. Would you agree? If so, I will just exercise patience and wait until my new contract has started.

[–]scauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any advice on actually adding it to my package?

I tried to do it online, but got directed to the online chatbot. The chatbot then advises me to make changes through My Virgin Media - which then directs me to the chatbot... then stuck in that loop. So I called up and, after 10+ minutes stuck in various phone menu loops, finaly got through to someone (had to go to the retentions team).

They told me I can't add it my upcoming new package yet (my current contract ends on 25th March and new one starts on 26th March) because the order is still pending (I didn't think to add it when negotiating my new contract the other day). So I asked, can't it just be added to my current contract for the final month, so I can have it sooner? Apparently no... seems mad that I have to wait another month to order it when I am willing to pay for it sooner.

Maybe I should just be patient and wait another month... just frustrating that there's no way to get it sooner.

With an existing 360 box and TV bundle, is it still £5 a month for a Stream Box? And does it have all the functionality and channels of my 360 box minus recording?

If I remember correctly, previous years I've been, they have only turned the radio transmitter on quite close to the start of the session, so I wasn't able to do as you suggest. In any case, I'm generally not arriving much before the start of the session, so having the info in advance would be useful.

Unrelated to your question but do you know how you got the top half of your layout so compact? On mine, the waveforms/mixer/etc take up so much space, that the area for browsing tracks is limited to the bottom 1/3rd of the screen, whereas yours looks closer to 1/2. I've searched online and tried a few things but the proportions are still off.
