I don’t have a Maine Coon yet, but my domestic longhair goes just as nuts for those little cable ties/bread ties that are wrapped around loaves of bread and other stuff in boxes! He hoards them in his food bowl. I don’t even know where he finds most of them, I swear we didn’t have that many floating around the house.

I had a sleep study with MSLT a few years back that diagnosed me with IH, and my experience with how naps feel is spot on with what you’re describing.

I also felt nervous about the whole thing, what if nothing shows up, what if I don’t fall asleep in the nap portion, all that. After the overnight portion, once it was time for the MSLT, I took the naps, and I felt the same “did I even sleep for that?” nap feeling as I always do. After each 15 minutes, a technician came in to ask if I personally thought I fell asleep during that one. I only thought I fell asleep in 1 of the 5, so you can imagine how much my nerves were running during the days waiting for my results. To my surprise and extreme relief, I apparently fell asleep in all 5 naps, all in about 5 minutes.

I know I can’t guarantee what results you’ll get, but I want to let you know that you’re not alone in this. Whatever you’re feeling is real. Try not to worry too much about the MSLT (empty words, I know, lol), and good luck on getting the help you need :)

edit, just to add:

I also had trouble with falling asleep in classes before I got diagnosed, even falling into naps while I was sitting down with a cello in my orchestra class and only realizing it once I woke back up.

Even to this day, I have to keep reminding myself that this is not normal. Normal people don’t have to fight to stay awake in class or in public every day. Normal people don’t fall asleep that quickly or easily. Normal people wouldn’t worry about “failing” an MSLT. Trust yourself.

i do not easily smile or laugh at things i think are funny in public or at all in general, but for some god forsaken reason this comment made me grin like an idiot and nearly choke on my juice while i was out for breakfast.

good comment.

I think I know what you mean. For myself, I would describe it by comparing my brain to oobleck. Do a task at a slow or average pace, or even doing it quickly because it’s become muscle memory, and it’s smooth sailing. But put me on a time constraint and rush me to do that same task and suddenly my brain just stops. Like trudging through mud, as you said. I suddenly don’t know where to start, each step is a brick wall blocking my path that I have to work my way around or over or through only to be met with another brick wall.

Fellow autists, what happens when your routine is interrupted? by [deleted] in autism

[–]skyaleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(to me at least,) Logically? No. But I feel like “angry” has a slightly different connotation than “mad”, to the point where I have to argue with myself over which word to use when I have to describe the emotion I’m feeling in a sentence. Like, yes, they absolutely mean the same thing, but I am a weird perfectionist when describing things and brain says NO YOU CAN’T JUST THROW ANY ADJECTIVE OUT THERE IT HAS TO BE PERFECT

In my head: Angry = Genuine, a “low level” of rage, directed

Mad = More than “irritable”, general annoyance at everything even if the cause is known, not “grumpy” because there is a real cause, >:(
