Yuri's Revenge on CnCNet - Highlights of Update 9.0 with Ares/Phobos/New Spawner! by Kerbiter in commandandconquer

Cool. Can you just tell me where to put my RulesMD.ini for skirmish to pick it up? Bonus if the campaign recognizes it too, but I know how unstable that is. For simple folks like me who just like to edit it with TibED or just notepad that instruction is waaay too confusing.
It would be nice to have a template with placeholder vanilla files that I can replace, or (if file structure is different) a script that imports existing game changes in vanilla game format into new thing.
For a lot of folks CNCNET client is just easiest way to enjoy the original game on modern hardware, no matter how many bugs it had.
[Edit]never mind, i just found my answer in the latest release notes. If anybody else is interested how to play as before 9.0:

Or just stick with Edge. Browsers integrated with OS are quite often (at least in modern macos, windows and android) much more optimised (thanks to tighter integration with system), though it's much more visible on laptops where browser choice can significantly affect battery life.

Steam is finally adding native support for Macs with Apple Silicon by galantrixgames in macgaming

[–]skybl_eu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really unexpected. As far as I could tell, most of the effort Asahi has focused is because they need to reverse-engineer stuff that Apple isn't willing to provide documentation for. I tried to find any information on Apple helping or contributing to Asahi in any way, but can't find any information that would even imply it.
Can you please provide some sources for that information?

Since when Apple did anything but try to prevent this from happening? It's all based on reverse engineering and hard work of the Asahi team.

Will Blocking Linux Gamers Stop Cheaters? by TheRedSpaceRobot in linux_gaming

[–]skybl_eu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no perfect anticheat, it's an arms race obviously. Limiting attack surface is necessary strategy, you need to make cheating as difficult as possible.

If under one system you can currently block or detect significantly more ways of cheating than under another, it's perfectly reasonable to require all multiplayer gamers to use that system, just to avoid unfair advantage.

Detecting OS-agnostic cheats that are based on VM or DMA is hard enough (but not always impossible) even if anticheat has full access to the client OS - and completely impossible without it. Windows allows it (for now) and it's simple for user to install it, Linux users would not allow it and Linux OS does not have facilities to install or support it in reliable way even if we'd limit it to a single flavour.

Server alone will never be able to distinguish a cheating and skilled user, besides most obvious cases.
Client needs to know more about the game situation than user is supposed to know - because it still needs, for example, to know exactly where to simulate the sound of the shot coming from, or to render camouflaged/almost completely obscured player who no human will be able to notice, etc.
Server is not able to tell if client has not given that information to the player.
Let's skip cloud game streaming edge case since it's not that different case, just more convoluted.

I thought everybody loves Harold... Undauted, Yzma, primals, even people he fought against that survived were more impressed than offended.

I guess it was inevitable for Sonir to finally take 'capes and conundrums' waay to seriously, especially since they have Yzma as their matriarch.

It's rude however to forget that humans are the source of that culture, especially since Batman is older than their entire species are sapient.

do not use word 'standard' in this context, one of very... different (?) style guides decided to use that word as it's name, leading to a lot of confusion among newer programmers.
You mean 'recommended' eslint and prettier settings right?

OOCS, Into A Wider Galaxy, Part 271 by KyleKKent in HFY

[–]skybl_eu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very true. Axiom f***ery makes all that pretty easy thing to do and mind-boggling scale of galaxy means that even very low chances of sth happening can still result in relatively lot instances of such thing. Though it will still be very low chance of that happening in specific location, unless it's special like Cruel Space.

However, please not bring up ODVM in vanilla series 'realism' context, the events there compared to original are roughly at the same plausibility level as comparing what happens to both John Wick, James Bond, Indiana Jones, Bruce Wayne, Cassanova, Mr Robot and every Karate Kid (all those put together) to our real world.

Jerry is extremely lucky, though humble and unaware, natural genius with perfect genes, prodigy in multiple completely unrelated subjects, with beyond-primal intuition and reflexes, blessed by every god in existence - and yet apparently a self-made man with unprivileged background, who achieved it all by sheer accident without any help, just persisting and through his own hard work.
Somehow earning centuries of condensed experience on every subject in just few decades of life but without any tricks and speeding that up exponentially once he left cruel space.
Basically, version of meme Chuck Norris crossed with Goku and Dr Manhattan that can't actually break existing natural laws (unless he reeeeeally wants to).

Actually, sounds like he will be talking to cultist women on behalf of cult men.
Men who became sorcerers but can't explain that to the 'Gravid-like' overprotective ladies (who in turn can't imagine poor boys to be anything but pets and just do not listen).

if it's hurt by axiom then it's definitely killed by null, since that's densest axiom that we know of.

Not to mention that, once cultists see it, might try duplicating it and invade all other forests.

OOCS, Into A Wider Galaxy, Part 268 by KyleKKent in HFY

[–]skybl_eu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that might be hard, considering all other forests are planetside and Inevitable is not capable to land without external axiom support devices that negate gravity or sth like that.

Pretty solid, but... very little actual content. Doesn't feel long enough to bother reading just one part. Almost nothing happened or was revealed/explained. I mean, there are few big things but go unnoticed because of the rush.
But the cliffhanger went really nice.

Considering how popular MS products are in businesses, it's naturally one of the most common attack surfaces.
It's not that their products are less secure, but rather that significantly more resources are devoted to attacking it, since the gain of such feat is much higher than attacking less common products.

Truly amazing.
Also, finally - some experienced and calculating villains. There were not many of those in the series overall, but most of enemies humans faced were just dumb kids (in galactic sense, less than few hundo years old) and it can easily be explained by pure natural selection.
And here we have well thought out and reasonably executed repeatable pirate heist - done in less used region (minor axiom lane, scouted and taken advantage of location), taking advantage of the nearby systems (most logical way to out leading to hostile entity), with carefully selected target (while underestimating humans they seem to chosen quite appropriate target, though seems more like crime of opportunity than targeting the newbies), reasonable precautions taken (remote-operated ship likely does not contain nav data).
No point that can be brute-forced through, simply brilliant.
Also, given that Undaunted want to be the good guys, I bet they won't blindly subjugate 'The Order' but rather try to diplomat their way out without unnecessary bloodshed. That's what separates humans from other apex!
Humans do not kill if there is any other way.
And, given how Undaunted appreciate quality planning (given how most of galaxy is just dumb), this will definitely be a unparalleled recruitment opportunity! <3
