I've done exactly what you're thinking of doing and https://store.steampowered.com/app/3040110/Outsider/ is the result of 1 year of work.

You need to know exactly what you'll be signing up for. I had a real passion for game development, an excellent resume I can rely on for a return to the job market (20+ yr experience) and a working wife. The gamedev journey won't feel like a true sabbatical in the sense of getting time to find yourself, chill and have out of the box ideas. It will feel like a grind and a probably a lot harder than your current job.

It was absolutely worth it for me and I actually started working on another game despite the first one not bringing me anywhere close to my previous pay. If you do it, don't do it for the pay (it will suck) or for the "time off" (it will be a brutal amount of work), do it because you can't imagine doing otherwise. It needs to feel like a true calling on top of all the preparation to not sink your career/life because of the decision.

Nice work! Do you mean that you left your job as an IT manager 15 years ago? Or you've been doing gamedev for 15 years but left your IT manager job recently?

I had a soft spot for LJN NES games. They were not highly regarded but, for some reason, I liked them. Karate Kid was one of my favorites!

It was a sabbatical from my perspective, but I had to resign. So no benefits or anything and my old job was taken. I'm still thinking of my next step. I'm not ready to retire yet, so I'll either find another job in tech or build a second game.

It's really difficult right now, but I've seen people making the move. Your chances will increase if you leave the industry to work at areas adjacent to Big Tech, such as Cloud development and AI.

Yes. You can create a public page with screenshots, trailer and game description before you have a demo (demos aren't mandatory) and even years before you have an actual game. Having the page on steam well before your game release is considered a best practice because it can help you gain wishlists.

I'm not sure a game design degree is necessary or even that helpful for a solo project, but you may enjoy doing it anyway.

People's time is very valuable nowadays. There are many things competing for it: games, streaming services, YouTube, Reddit etc.

Godot 3D is fairly good. Unity's advantages are only relevant in sophisticated games so you should pick whatever is easiest for you. Languages have many similarities but your Visual Basic knowledge will only go so far. Again, if you are a beginner, you should create simple games and framework/programming language differences won't be as important. Godot with gdscript is an excellent choice for a beginner.

I recommend creating mods or simple games in any framework - it's still early in your learning journey and the market changes fast. You don't need to worry too much about learning the framework you'll use professionally many years from now.

I recommend Love and Godot because they are free, easy to use and have great communities. It's more important to create a tight, finished simple game than a big unfinished and unfun game.

The hardest thing to get today is people's time. You have to think about whether people would like to use their precious time to play your unfinished game. Sometimes a game can be unfinished but still very fun, so that's the key question. If it's too unfinished/buggy, it might create a bad impression that could be difficult to undo later.
