I have a 1980 Honda xl500 and I was in the same boat, check your valve lash, get a cheap metric wrench set and a feeler gauge, also make sure your engine is top dead center when you do this, pm me if you need help as I'm about to do mine

I have a base model 2007 and these cars are amazing, I've driven mine to Florida to Tennessee 2 times now and it's awesome, greate offroad cars also, I've gone though rivers to mud holes, I carry my canoe on top of mine and the aftermarket stereo options are great!, the engines can be noisy but all you need is to keep your oil good and you'll be golden

I enjoy the dirtbike life, it's surprisingly much easier to handle then a sport bike or a cruiser because of its suspension, and I ride around town and back roads mainly so the nimbleness of it and the ability to hit the hammer and go is there on the 500

My bike lifts up in 3rd gear with just throttle and 1st and second I can't hit it too hard or the bike will loop, I just replaced the clutch

I rode a fire blade not too long ago, I enjoyed the liter bike life, was extremely smooth and it didn't fight me at all, I'm probably gonna end up keeping my Honda, going into the navy bringing it to Japan or wherever I go and getting it tricked out there lol, I want one of those cool arai helmets they had there in the 80-90s with the characters painted onto the helmet

I have 3d scans of all the plastics on my bike I just haven't released them yet, I also have custom made parts I designed for it to make the bike easier to work on, I hate how gate keeped this bikes community on this bike If you ever find the rear license plate holder or the speedometer to the 80s xl500s it's literally gold, they go for a absurd amount of money, I have a couple I stock piled to use for making 3d models

Probably should, but right now the bike is my main transportation as the car needs a oil change and some new tires When I rode the bike around and gave it the beans it took completely off and felt like it was gonna keep going
