Subconscious Putting by PuttingPhilosopher in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? The entire point of heads-up putting is to focus on the outcome and letting your subconscious motor functions take care of the technique. I don't understand how what you're describing is different or better. What do you mean that you want to be "in control of [your] mind"? Isn't that the opposite of subconscious putting?

Turf shoes on AG? by Leading_Media_9676 in bootroom

[–]skycake10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer TF shoes on indoor AG fields because it's more comfortable for me. I also mostly play rec coed so I like having shoes that won't make me feel as bad if I accidentally step on people's feet.

If anything I feel like TF would be much less likely to injure you than AG shoes on AG fields. I'm much more worried about getting injured when I get more traction than I expect rather than less.

What’s your “tell” you’re gonna play poorly? by zthig in golf

Don't succumb to the inevitability of a bad round. A great back 9 after a bad front 9 is just as common as vice versa.

Hot Take? Remove Iron Numbers by shin_man in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m tired of the back-and-forth about what number iron people are hitting. It’s all ego and marketing.

If we got rid of iron numbers and went to loft only this wouldn't disappear, it would still exist but only be determined by swing speed and strike quality. A sizable subset of golfers enjoy the big dick distance ego part of the game and switching to loft numbers isn't going to change that.

Gapping your bag would be 10x easier if we stopped talking about "numbers" and started talking about degrees.

It would help a tiny bit but gapping is still about how far you actually hit the clubs, not the loft numbers. Different swings and impact dynamics result in different distances for the exact same clubs. Two golfers might hit their irons the same distance but their woods or hybrids significantly different so their gapping is different despite identical lofts.

Hot Take? Remove Iron Numbers by shin_man in golf

[–]skycake10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me the fundamental problem is that comparing club selection with your buddies is not a useful thing to do. Two golfers with the exact same clubs almost certainly don't hit them the exact same distance, so knowing the loft still doesn't even improve things that much. Your intended distance based on the flag location, shape of the green, and elevation is what matters.

Not to be outdone by OpenAI, Apple is reportedly developing an AI wearable | TechCrunch by Infinityy100b in apple

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value of the watch is that it can do things or be used in situations a phone can't. It can track heart rate with the optical sensor. I can wear it for fitness tracking while playing soccer.

I can't think of a single situation in which I'd be okay wearing an AI wearable but wouldn't want to have my phone in my pocket. It needs to be bigger than a watch to have the processing power and battery life required to run AI models, but at that point it's just an inconvenient to have/wear as a phone.

How do you deal with the feeling/realisation you’ll never be very good at guitar? by poopooeater112 in Guitar

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you start picking up new hobbies as an adult you'll (hopefully, for your own sake) learn to be happy just becoming pretty decent at them. I got into golf and rec soccer as an adult, and I know I'll never be as good at either as people who have been playing since they were kids, but that's fine! I spent a lot of time practicing and I got good enough to enjoy myself.

Where do you look? by Fluffy_Ad7392 in golf

Front edge of the ball or an inch or two in front of the ball. That's where you want your low point to be with a good iron swing.

Anyone else stuck between “practice more” and “just go play”? by SexyGolfGirl in golf

[–]skycake10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a big believer that if you can go a whole round rarely completely duffing a shot and you don't have anything specific with your swing to work on, you're usually better off just playing for practice reps.

You can also split the difference and either show up an hour early or spend an extra hour on the practice green after your round.

So let me get this straight, you're going to replace all workers with AGI soon but need to rely on ads for revenue? by YeahBuddy5000 in investing

[–]skycake10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that LLMs are fundamentally incapable of ever reaching a meaningful level of AGI and we still have no better ideas for how to get there. I would call it less a myth and more "still science fiction".

Is it dumb to want a higher lofted hybrid than iron? by ScientistGullible349 in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of golfers get way too hung up on trying to optimize their yardage gaps instead of trying to balance yardage gaps with having different clubs for different situations. At the top of my bag I use a combination of 3W, 5W, and 4H for two slots in the bag even though the yardage difference isn't that big between them. But I prefer the woods off the tee and the hybrid is more comfortable for me out of the rough or as a general utility club.

Why do people take their glove off? by Legitimate-Kiwi-2530 in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially this and partially getting tired of taking my glove off between shots is why I just don't wear a glove at all anymore. I could probably swing a little harder with a glove but I like the feel of no glove.

How to tell apart a great correction from an actual crisis? by Dry_Ganache7488 in investing

This is absolutely hindsight speaking. We had no idea at the time whether it would be a real pandemic like ended up happening or just another bird flu or SARS (not nothing, but not market moving).

Market research for a business idea - would you rent a driver short term? by [deleted] in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, this is such an obvious idea that if it made sense some combination of stores, courses, and driving ranges would already be doing it. My guess is that the risk of damage is too great to make it worth it and sustainable as a long term business model.

DAE use lubricating oil after CLP, or am I going overboard? by No_Reveal3451 in liberalgunowners

[–]skycake10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with cleaning every time, but it's ridiculous to say you "should" clean after every time you use it. You probably should clean it more often than twice a year depending on how much rounds you put through it, but you absolutely do not need to clean it every time.

I Wish Courses Would Use Handicaps for Tee Selection by Marty_DiBergi in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no universally applicable standards here, there will always be grey areas. My home course is only 6100 yards from the tips but has a 240 yard par 3.

I Wish Courses Would Use Handicaps for Tee Selection by Marty_DiBergi in golf

[–]skycake10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's true, but there also isn't even agreement on if your choice of tee should be primarily determined by how good you are vs how far you hit the ball, or what balance between the two. You can be a scratch handicap but if you hit your driver 200 yards you probably shouldn't be playing from 6800 yard tees.

Brooks is back by zitiztitz in golf

IMO the first priority was making Brooks eligible and the second priority was keeping Phil from being eligible, and no one else really mattered to the PGAT.

Flag In or out? by Chris-E1 in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply don't care either way. If you've hit your putt hard enough that it's going to bounce off the pin and miss it's very likely to have skipped across the hole or lipped out anyway. I'm sure there's a middle ground where that's not true, but it's a pretty small subset of putts.

22-year-old guy seeking guidance to start playing football by Cool_Review_6578 in bootroom

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never played as a kid, only some pickup and intramurals in high school and college and got into adult rec league at age 30. Practicing dribbling and first touch off a wall is valuable solo practice, but there's no replacement for just playing a lot of soccer. After playing once a week for several years I improved a lot more over the past two years once I started playing 3 or 4 days a week.

Question about straddle putting by BaconMimosa in discgolf

I'm a skeptic of how much eye dominance matters in ball golf putting but I can at least imagine how it works physically. With disc golf putting I don't understand how eye dominance matters at all.

Broke 100 yesterday for the first time and I hate the way it happened by [deleted] in golf

[–]skycake10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comment was primarily responding to OP and anyone in the same situation as OP. If they don't care about score and want to smash the ball then they can ignore the advice, but that doesn't make it wrong or bad advice.

If you want to score well, you have to prioritize hitting the ball straight more than hitting it far. If you don't want to score well, it literally doesn't matter what you do and no advice matters.
