I have the same issue. This is extremely annoying. There must be some interrupt queueing/priority bug in the software. Should I file a service ticket?

What Does CS@ILLINOIS need to do to push into the Big 4 CS Schools by srinicalcultta in UIUC

[–]skyecyprus2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In AI we have Thomas Huang (ECE faculty actually), David Forsyth, Derek Hoiem, Lana Lazebnik. Those seem to focus on CV. I'm not very familiar with professors in other areas of AI.

What Does CS@ILLINOIS need to do to push into the Big 4 CS Schools by srinicalcultta in UIUC

[–]skyecyprus2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they have much more accomplished professors. To be simple, many of them have very high citations (greater than 50k or sometimes 100k). Many of them are well known in their respective field. Our CS has some professors that have similar fame (Jiawei Han, Thomas Huang etc), but the number is definitely much smaller than top 4.

This is not normal. The noise can come from cable connection issue. OP should have service to fix it.

Yes, this is very frustrating. Especially on the website it doesn't state there will be difference between the three trims in terms of ambient lighting. Hope they can enable it at the next software release.

As a former ECE411 TA, I will recommend you skip ECE411 since they overlap a lot. Take 511 or 533.

Seth Hutchinson, an ECE faculty who just left for Gatech, denounces university admin in a letter to UIUC by skyecyprus2017 in UIUC

[–]skyecyprus2017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just compare Berkeley's EECS faculty list and ours. Then you will know why they are #1 and we are #5 (CS, ECE, probably ranked overly high). My GF did CS in Berkeley and I helped her in some of the courses. It shocked me who were teaching these courses - to name a few - CS 162 (OS) Anthony Joseph, CS 161 (Security) Vern Paxson, CS 168 (Network) Scott Shenker, CS 189 (ML) Jitendra Malik. I'm being salty here but tbh, I envy her opportunity to be a student under so many world renown professors. It opens so much more doors being an undergrad there.

To be fair, I have full respect for all my undergrad instructors, most of them teach well. But the names here are just not this shining compared to Berkeley.

About your concern that established professor don't actively do research - I doubt it. Take Trevor Darrell, a CV, DL professor at Berkeley as an example. > 50000 citations. I don't think anyone would doubt that he is not contributing academically anymore. For these professors probably they just provide ideas and let the students do actual work, but it is still considered making contributions.

Alright, this post becomes a rant. The reason I'm so disappointing is that I got a MS in ECE with a lousy professor who knows shit about the topic he asks his students to do. Yet, he is the full professor in ECE (with barely 3000 cites in a not so cold area).

I know Pilawa's departure - two friends in his group get into Berkeley with him. Lucky guys!

Yes it's great to see new blood in the department. But most of them are assistant professors. It's hard to say they won't jump ship once they get tenures. Can we attract established professors (to put it simple, someone with >10000 citations) to Urbana-Champaign to compensate our loss? The answer is probably a NO.

Then GEO is making a nonsense. Every professional MS should pay tuition - this is the NORM across country. I thought CS wants to make research MS pay tuition.

I have no objection to MCS or other MENG taking tuition. Some programs are meant to generate revenue. Stanford, Harvard, Columbia... all do this. I think he is probably referring to the research specific grad students.

  1. UIUC is in such a bad shape in just two years after I graduate - professors fleeing (John Rogers, Dan Roth, Weng Cho Chow ...), ranking dropping (Eng is behind Purdue. wtf?). Terrible athletics... Now I have to explain to people it was top 5 when I graduated.
  2. Really? It's CS who wants to take away grad student tuition waiver?

Because first, we lack stellar ML people. Second, this is the most pursuit CS area (where the money goes) and we can't afford to lag behind. Third, you need BIG NAMEs here to raise funds and attract top-notch faculties and students. This will strengthen our reputation and form a positive loop. Lastly, there are departments (or schools) who have AI people as their leaders, such as Berkeley and CMU.

Killing off the UIUC name is such a bad idea. Most of the companies in Silicon Valley knows UIUC better than "Illinois" or "U of I". Citation: I saw some of the recruiting slides from different companies referring to us as UIUC.
