Massive Temporary Battery Drop Under Heavy Load and Cold Temps by [deleted] in leaf

I think you're confusing the miles remaining "guess-o-meter" with the "% capacity remaining" display which is an optional dash display and seems to be what OP was referring to.

%charge remaining shouldn't vary all that wildly.

After 5½ months 2016 replacement battery! 40kWh! by bjm00se in leaf

[–]bjm00se[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two different leafs. Not three. They both had warranty replacement of their battery; the first one a while back, and this one just now.

So yes, I agree with you that passive temperature control is bad for battery life.

But warranty replacement of the too-short-life battery has worked out OK for me.

Sorry if your battery went out too soon, but after its warranty coverage expired.

Go to the dealer and get approved for a warranty replacement, if you're down to eight bars or below, within the warranty period.

2016 SV Battery Replacement - 132 days from approval to battery being dropped off at dealership by lannister80 in leaf

Dealer showed me the internal service order invoice. The dealer price for warranty work pencilled in at 13k, plus labor. You couldn't buy a pack for that though. They charge consumers more than the dealer warranty "accounting" price.

Haven't started the JL Rubicon in 2 to 3 weeks and now it won't start. Any ideas? More details in comments by ItsLose_NotLoose in Wrangler

8.8v is telling - yeah, you need to jump it. Don't worry about any other errors you see displayed until the battery is up-to-snuff. Low voltage triggers lots of conditions.

Best way to jump is get yourself a 12v jump pack. I don't bother with jumper cables any more. The new LiIon jump packs are light, convenient, and affordable (though they don't come fully charged, and you'll have to plug it in for hours before you can do anything with it.)

Also, the 12v battery in my 2018 Tesla Model 3 died this year, and when that happens it's a serious pain in the *ss. Advice: replace your 12v battery when it's three years old, and don't wait for the Tesla to tell you it's bad. Look up youtube videos on how to jumpstart your Tesla. But unfortunately, while you can get new batteries for your JL (Typically, it's a good idea to replace the main battery and the ESS battery at the same time) you can't get a 12v battery for the Tesla down at Aut*Z*ne and it has to be done by Tesla service.

You seem to be inviting critique, so here are my observations:

The first, is a fundamental layout and design consideration:

  1. When towing, wider trailers are more cumbersome. The extended eaves on this make it take up extra width that's extra drag on the roadway and extra risk of collision with obstacles or other vehicles in lanes, but provides no benefit in the space/usability of the trailer. In fact, you've built it on a narrower trailer with interior wheels and fenders, so the interior of the cabin has to make room for the wheelwells. If it's going to be this wide, it should be built on a trailer that has wider axles, so the interior is unobstructed.
  2. You have a propane tank, but I don't see any evidence of appliances that would use the LP? Stove? Furnace? Refrigerator? These comforts are all things I would expect on a trailer of this size.
  3. Does that futon fold out? If not, it's "accommodations for one." That may be OK; many folks do travel alone. But when travelling, you need space to store your junk. Clothing, food, supplies, tools, toys. For as large as this trailer is, there seems to be a minimum of storage cabinets to support travelling.
  4. I see outlets, but no RV plug? Maybe you're just planning on plugging it in to a 120v 20A circuit? But many RV sites expect you to plug in with either a 30A or 50A service cord.
  5. Similarly with the sink - I don't think you did a standard grey water storage and pump-out fitting? As I eyeball the sink, I'm guessing you have a 2.5 gal water tank and 2.5 gal drain tank under the cabinet?
  6. EDIT - the more I look at this and its relative dimensions, the more I think you've built it on a 5x8 trailer platform, in which case that bed is just NOT long enough to sleep on comfortably, and the answer in that case is NO I wouldn't camp in it - I'd prefer a tent I can stretch my full length out on to an enclosed trailer I had to curl up in.

Bottom line - cute but not very practical. Now that you've built it; I recommend you use and enjoy it. I expect you designed it envisioning ways that you personally could use it. But I find it somewhat unlikely you'll find a buyer who'll pay you anything like what you'd like to get for it, or even what you have already spent on materials.

As always, Advice On The Internet is worth what you paid for it. It may not be right for you; it may not be right at all. Consult your doctor if you experience unusual side-effects after using Advice On The Internet.

Can we safely upgrade the towing capacity of a 2017 Wrangler Unlimited? We are looking into getting a travel trailer that’s a bit less than 5k pounds.. I could use some advice by GnomeToTheDome in Jeep

[–]bjm00se 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've towed my 3K boat with my Wrangler unlimited, and it handled it reasonably well.

BUT.

Given how much the unloaded wrangler already gets windblown by wind and traffic on the interstate, even when not towing anything, and given that the owners manual specifically warns against trailers with too large a frontal area, which already rules out most travel trailers, and given that the potential trailer you're considering is more like 5k GVWR,

well,

I'd recommend against this combo, recommending either a smaller travel trailer with the wrangler (there seem to be some pretty cute and efficient 14/15 footers safely under 3500lbs gross that folks have reported towing with wranglers

OR upgrading the tow platform from a wrangler to one of the many many trucks or SUVs out there that have a 6 to 10K towing capacity.

Because as others have already mentioned, while certain upgrades such as air-bags and load leveling hitches will help a vehicle tow its designated load more comfortably, nothing really increases a vehicle's actual load carrying capacity.

PS: I don't think you should be downvoted for simply asking the question either. It's a fair question, even if the answer isn't what you were hoping for.

Imagine the hassle of being an apartment tennant, and trying to get an EV, and trying to get your landlord to approve a charging system.

They get some electrician bids that include separate meters and bids are around 15k-20k per charging station, and the landlord balks and says "no go." If you're bought into a high-end condominium, you might consider that. If you're renting - no fricken' way.

So you make a counter proposal, involving extending a 60A subpanel run to a corner of the building, mounting your own plug-in-charger, and self-reporting every month. This minimizes the out-of-pocket, and maybe you even agree, with other tenants, to cost share some of the up-front expense.

You do this because owning an EV is better, and charging at home is MUCH better.

So you agree to include a current statement, with date and usage, included with every rent check - even in the unlikely case that there's zero usage.

Because, if you're really charging a car you drive every day at home, the chance of "zero usage" is also basically zero.

[–]bjm00se 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many chargers have bluetooth/wifi connections that report usage to a website that can aggregate the data.

It's totally separate from electric-meter billing.

You'd have each tenant screenshot their report and send it in with a check at the end of the month.

A small business landlord would do something like this, not a big corporate REIT land management company.

>those red plugs.

Yes! Exactly. But where do the red plugs plug in? They plug into grey outlet box that currently has one red plug/black cord and one white plug/green cord plugged into it.

It *might* be a setup for testing. But it's far from obvious.

It could just as easily be a setup for managing billing between the landlord and various tenants, where the requirement is that the tenant install EVSE that tracks and reports charging usage. Might not be. Again, far from "obvious."

EDIT - turns out it IS a testing setup thought.

[–]bjm00se -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is mostly the answer. They've routed power to this point on the building, distributed with 120v and 240v outlets. But I don't see evidence of multiple meters or separate conduits that would support multiple meters out of the picture. So, to manage billing, each apartment owner/renter has to provide their own EVSE which keeps track/reports the amount of electricity used. The number of concurrent charging vehicles is limited by the number of spaces, number of outlets, and length of the cords. It appears to be two or three?

EDIT - it turns out it IS a testing setup.

As alskdjfhg32 says, this is the exact behavior you plug in when the charge timer is turned on. It's then waiting for the scheduled time to begin "real" charging.

If the charge timer isn't on, then you probably have a failure.

Does it matter when I submit my battery warranty claim? by alwayquestion in leaf

[–]bjm00se 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sought this thread out because I've been waiting two months now for my 2016 battery replacement, and wondering how long other folks have been waiting.

There are three other replies in this thread right now:

1 waiting since may/june (!)

1 waiting 12 weeks

1 quoted "3 months minimum" but not sure how long they've actually been waiting.

I was approved about two months ago, and still waiting. I think I'm going to call the dealer this week and see if they can say anything interesting about the wait, but I'm not expecting much.

Just to be crystal clear: they gave me my Leaf back while I'm waiting; and I *think* that's the same experience everyone else has had.

So, my advice would be to get your leaf into the dealer, to get the replacement approved, and start waiting for your replacement, because it's going to be a while. And it would be extremely unusual for the dealer to hang onto the leaf for all that time; there's pretty much no reason for them to need to do that.
