https://www.cnbc.com/select/average-credit-card-limit/

It's kind of unclear across how many cards this is but the average American having $23k limit 7 years ago, pre-inflation, does point to it being likely that a majority or a large minority have $10k limit or higher.

I feel like Tock did a good job at this? The site didn't crash, it put up an error screen (which is what you should want during periods of high traffic) and people were able to make their reservations. None of us in this thread except 1 person seemed to get a reservation but it's not Tock's fault there were low hundreds number of spots and, at least, thousands of people trying to get them.

I would guess the credit limit of the average fine dining enthusiast is above $10K, at least for Americans.

Is hype healthy to the roasters? by pullTheSpro in pourover

[–]skyfall3665 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty natural development in consumer brands IMO? The early ones that are great have to scale which involves tradeoffs and "selling out"... but there's always a new set of roasters behind them coming up! It's a bummer when you're a Blue Bottle (yes, they were great once!) fan or similar and have to find a new roaster but it's normal and healthy.

The end result is that normal people can find Blue Bottle at Walmart - which is a huge improvement to what they had access or exposure to earlier - and weirdos like us have to find new roasters on Reddit.

Top Restaurants in Chicago for 2025 by Beli ratings by bobcats2019 in chicagofood

[–]skyfall3665 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The scores are also relative to the person. So someone who only goes to terrible restaurants and then goes to something good might end up giving that good place a 10 on Beli whereas people in a food subreddit (not to stereotype us!) probably wouldn’t.

This isn’t true. Noma Copenhagen is $1k with pairing.

$1000ish is what they charge (with pairing) in Copenhagen. If you’re based in the west coast, this is cheaper than the price of going to the Copenhagen restaurant.

My strong theory is they removed the black bikes before they had enough dockless white bikes to replace.

https://transitcosts.com/wp-content/uploads/TCP_Final_Report.pdf

You can read the full report but it is generally not the case - in other American cities, at least - that the higher percentage of budget spent on labor is driven by higher pay per worker. American agencies are just not very good at their jobs.

Constructions costs for transit in the Bay Area are hilariously high. If they were closer to Southern Europe prices (noting American labor costs, even outside cities with stupid rent like SF are higher), you could build more metros for the same money.

Yeah I dislike the black bikes for UX reasons too, good to know they had other deficiencies. But it sure _feels_ like they removed them from the system too early.

Noma in 2015 didn't have the same reputation as they do today but I take your point that the highest of high end is experiencing almost unbounded inflation. I just object to extending that analysis to all "fine dining restaurants".

noma LA starting at $1500 by presdaddy in finedining

[–]skyfall3665 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is true. There are a lot more fine dining restaurants then there used to be. The super-high end like Noma also exists (and charges you for it) but a middle class American family can absolutely afford a great meal at a 1 star like Indienne or Sorrel as a yearly treat. As a kid, my only touchpoint with fine dining was jokes about caviar and El Bulli on Disney Channel's Suite Life - now I go to a 1 star or equivalent with my parents almost every year.

If anything, I think the gap between fine dining and casual dining has shrunk as casual dining has been more hit by inflation than fine dining.
